Tutorial: Display Flash for Any Website on Windows 8 / RT

Submitted by Christopher Groux; November 12, 2012

While Apple has enjoyed the quite comfort of a large ecosystem, pressure seems to be mounting constantly from the competition. Under the case of Windows, we have what is known as Windows 8 RT. For those who are unfamiliar with the distinction, this is essentially a watered down version of the full Windows 8 that is specialized to work with tablet computers. At this point, the Microsoft Surface is probably the most popular hardware running RT, but you can expect that more and more third-parties are chomping at the bit to take their own spin with this OS.

However, as a part of the limitations, Microsoft has trimmed down Adobe Flash support to only certain approved Microsoft websites. It's pretty lame I know, but that's why I'm here to show you a pretty easy software based solution to fix that little mess to enable it for any site you want!

- First head on into desktop mode IE10 and click Tools/Compatibility View Settings and deselect the option that says "download updated compatibility list from Microsoft"

- Now do an explorer or drive search for the "%HOMEPATH%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\IECompatData\" directory.

- Once there, look for anything with the meta tags and you will probably see the bunch of domains already listed there.

- All you have to do is make tags similar to the ones you see, but add the site that you would like to use for flash purposes.

- Save the file, and clear your IE10 browsing history. From that point on, your site should work with flash enabled!

Do you all think it's early enough for so many developers to be cutting the chord with flash? I know it's buggy and aging but, I'm sure we all still use it a lot.
