Soul Calibur V Has a Story to Tell

Submitted by OS_Gamer; January 18, 2012

In the latest trailer for Soul Calibur V, we see that there's a story there amongst all the blood and swords.

Yes, it may just be an arena fighting game in which you slice and dice your opponent to shreds with a variety of bladed implements, but Soul Calibur V also tells a story of two magical swords and the chaos that springs up around them.

Well, if nothing else the video certainly looks great. A lot of the language is pretty hokey and contrived; every oath is written and said with what is supposed to be serious gravity, but it's pretty much filler.

This is a fighting game; let's fight! It never made since to me how developers have tried to shoehorn a story into fighting games. The "I'll enter the tournament to get at the guy running the thing" has been done a million times, going all the way back to the Bruce Lee movies. In other games, such as this one, there's a lot of exposition and a soaring story behind it all, then the two opponents fall into a static arena and fight. OK.

Soul Calibur will be out on Xbox 360 and PS3 on January 31st.
