Say Goodbye To Pre-Owned Games?

Submitted by UnashamedVandal; February 08, 2012

Rumours have been slung around from website to website and ear to ear; people have been reporting so much different information about next generation consoles recently it is hard to distinguish fact from fiction. However when a recognised game developer becomes involved in the latest Chinese whisper, it might be time to show some concern. Why concern you say? Well it would appear that Microsoft have some quite disappointing ideas for their next generation console, the most attention grabbing of the lot is the end of pre-owned titles. Thats right; the Xbox 720 has been reported to stop players buying and playing pre-owned games on their console, forcing people to fork out insane amounts of money for brand new titles. Saber Interactive CEO named Matthew Karch who worked on Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary, has spoken out against this idea stating that it is unfair on the players not keep $60 games that they dont want. He also said that if Microsoft wish to go about tackling the problem they should most definitely find a different approach to it. Let me know your thoughts.

that is just crazy! they cant do that..a majority of the games i purchase for any system is pre-owned..even if its a dollar difference between the two! ive had a lot of luck getting pre-owned ones that are in near perfect condition to very few scratches!

if microsoft does that then i will not purchase there next gen console..but i bet once its hacked it will be able to play pre-owned games...how will microsoft keep the "pre-owned" ones from playing? (and no not the piracy ones) as all the games from each region have the same code..the code changes per region!..the only way that comes to mind would be like what sony has tried to do is 1 code per game >.< and that is stupid and would cost them loads of sales..

not sure how this could work in the 1st place, i mean sure a system could record that you have this game and load some special to that specific disk id or sompthing but that wouldnt stop another system thats not online to load that same disc anyways, i just dont get how they could make it to where you couldnt buy a pre used game......the only other thing i could think of is for the system to make a mark on the disc that would make it unplayable on any other system.....but even with that i wouldnt want my system to make "MARKS" on my disc's...either way i dont see this happening....it was all everyone worried about when ps3 was coming out and we see where that went...i dont think this will happen

The only way they can truly get rid of used game is to create a purely digital market; i.e. Any and all games for the Xbox 720 would be downloaded from the marketplace.

I usually share games with friends and they share with me, if they do this there will a lot more people coming to piracy so I think if they do have it as a digital form they should at least have multiple console activations

They might add a burning laser to only burn in a specific one ime write only sector and there would go the console info so that once burned you can't change it and will be locked to that console only. Just a theory and i won't support next gen console if this is the way they want to play their game

this isnt the only issue... how are they going to controll this? is it "by console"? cause we may easily find multiple console owners! or even if its replaced under warranty (or not)... guess there are many points to think about that arent as linear as that!

well to tell you the truth if the gaming industry is wanting to crack down on stores or user's on the net selling pre-owned games then they should:

First: Lower the prices on the new games to around $39.99 unless Limited Edition are made of the games (Believe me drop the price on games to a reasonable price and more NEW will sell then Pre-Owned)!

Two: They should release each game with a Code you use to input into your system weather its Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo with the Max of 2 Installs per code after that they should give you the option to purchase other codes with the Max of 2 Installs again for $10.99 (i think that price is fair for everybody)

that would actually make any sellers think twice and also make the gaming industry think twice about making/buying crappy games and then everyone is happy but that is just me dunno about you guys but i think this is an actual good idea!

I for one think this is outrageous

why lock games after one use?

i dont understand the reasoning

ohhh we are all loosing out on money oohhhh noooo

and what about those limited release games thats stupid hard to get ahold of?

and juggalo559m what you stated is even more of a line of great bullshit

2 codes per install?

10.99 for 2 more?

is that not a situation of double jeopardy?

paying agn for something you already own?

i would think more gamers would just migrate to the mobile systems vs the home consoles

Apple and ninty would consume the market on gaming

microsoft is just pulling low blows if they truely intend to follow thru on that

it makes no more sense then to mod a console

unless games dip way low in price ohh i say around 10-20$

then i may justify but then i may as well use my ipod/iphone right?

the big picture

microsoft is going to fail if they push thru witht he endeavor to do a onetime use game

What about users who don't have broadband internet?  Believe it or not, there are people even in the US who still use dial-up or have no insternet whatsoever.  I still used dial-up until July 2008.  I am personally against any and all things that require internet activation especially those games that have those stupid online passes.

It will put alot of stores out of business because their profit margin will be cut.

for the same reason Alot of people will be out of work

Game sales will go up in the short term but dwindle in the long term as people cease to be able to trade in games to get credit towards a new game

Also customers will move away from a company with such tight restrictions. As the games carry no secondary value.

This might work if there was only one console maker but if only one chooses this restriction, they will loose the console war.

next generation all consoles will do this, guaranteed. third party developers want every dollar they can get their grubby hands on and they think anyone buying used games in no better than a common thief. last generation they coaxed microsoft & sony into raising the cost of new games from 50 to 60 by threatening not to support their system if they did not, now they're putting pressure on them to officially kill used games. microsoft was just the first to voice their concerns about it, hoping to bring the issue to light before it's too late and avoid name dropping. yet all the faggots out there actually think this brainfart was microsoft's doing. idiots.

hope nintendo doesn't follow  this path, and becomes the most successful console ever for the next gen.

that way they can choke on their ideas.

Let's hypothetically say M$ decides to get rid of the optical drive and go the route of digital downloads.  In all honesty it's the way of the future for all media anyway, but entering the future doesn't mean you get rid of the past all together.  DVD sales are still bringing in the bucks even with on demand, but for sake of argument let's assume they do indeed pull a vanishing act on the optical drive.

Benefits:

1. Cheaper costs per game title.  They won't have the overhead associated with distributing games worldwide.

2. Game developers would have an enormous ceiling to size their games.  No disc means infinite space.

3. From M$ perspecitve they can now control gamers the way they've controlled computer users for decades.

4. From M$ perspective they can make a very big attempt, key word attempt, to counter and defeat piracy.

5. From M$ perspective they can eliminate the middle man like Gamestop, BBY, Walmart and exclusively distribute their games.

6. From M$ perspective they can require membership fees from each console owner to use their servers to download titles thus sucking more money out of each consumer.

7. Less moving parts should mean more reliability and longevity out of the console.

8. More space inside the console means they can shrink the overall size of the console and keep it cool.

9. Downloadable content and Multiplaying are preludes to the idea of making console games a restricted access type of gameplay.  Not only can they make a video game cost upwards of a $100 with all the DLC and the original cost, but M$ can control gamers by forcing them into playing the games exlcusively on their servers, sort of like massive role playing games on the pc.

Negatives:

1. Game prices will almost stay the same.  If the costs are minimized from lack of distribution but design and developmental costs increase due to the lifted ceiling they will almost cancel each other out.  It's possible that the difference might warrant a few bucks saved, but we're not going back to the days when games were $25-40 bucks.

2. Not everyone has an internet connection, not eveyone has or wants to buy a wireless router (assuming the new console will have wireless capabilities), not everyone has a highspeed connection, which is what it will take to download a game in a reasoable amount of time (it still takes pirates a couple hours to download from irc, and even more from a public tracker), and not everyone wants to share the dedicated bandwidth needed to not only download games but keep the console playing them for hours upon hours.

3. If the Internet connection is out then we're in the stone age.  No web surfing, no tv, and now no consoles.  Internet connection is not stable enough to support constant gaming, especially in certain parts of the country.

4. I have 4 consoles, 2 desktops and 2 laptops.  Unless M$ is giving each consumer a free T1 server i don't know how it's possible for everyday consumers to have multiple consoles in home.

5. No optical drive means the games have to run off a Hard drive.  Odds are they would want to employ an SSD in place of the HDD as SSD's are the wave of the future.  Problem is SSD's are expensive.  It's almost a buck a gig.  If the games are at least 8gb in size, if not more due to no ceiling restricitions the SSD's used with the new consoles will price M$ out of the video game market.  You'd only be able to purchase, download, and store 30 or less games on a 256GB SSD.  The SSD alone will cost almost the exact same price as the current slim models.

6. If the SSD fails, which they still can, what happens to all your games?  do you have to rebuy them?  Obviously you'd lose everything and would have to dl, but what if there's a charge?

7. Consumers can't always afford brand new titles.

8. Jobs would be lost in an already struggling economy.  Gamestop themselve's employ over 17,000.  Struggling Best Buy will lose millions in revenue, which would probably force them over the edge.  Millions of shareholders lose from Gamestop and BBY's ultimate demise.  Even Walmart would take a hit in the electronic's department.

9. Piracy will never die by the conventional means.  You'll only anger the pirates to find new ways to combat M$'s efforts and the cat and mouse game will continue.  The record and movie industry has realized that there isn't a way to hault piracy, but there is a way to make money by diversifying the way you distribute.  ITunes, on demand, and live streaming are not only revenue streams for said industry's, but also give consumers a new option.  Piracy is designed for one reason and that's conveinance.  Conveinance in terms of cost and accessiblity, but the original options are still available (in-store).  When Napster arrised back in the mid 90's the movie and music industries were in an uproar.  They tried to fight in the courtrooms and nothing worked.  the idea's were leaked and the technology blossomed.  Today everyone has pirated something at some point.  It took the music and movie industries over a decade to finally realize that the only way to combat piracy is not to throw your lwayers at them, but to challenge them in the market place with new and fresh ideas.  The birth of ipods, ipads, and iphones with itunes, live streaming, and on-demand movies for affordable costs have helped said industries gain sales.  Today the same technology used in Napster's dominance has now shifted in favor of the big industries because they treated piracy as competition not as a hostile takeover.  M$ should follow suit.  Give people the option of downloading and playing off a hard drive, but don't demand it or M$ can very well become the Sega of the 21st century.  Guess this negative can also be a positive depending on the perspective.

Holy crap I read every comment here, and liked all of them. This scares the crap out of me!I worry about this big time, Microsoft and Sony control how all this is going to go and if the Diablo 3"Always have to have internet connection"fiasco hasn't shown what can happen with this kind of stuff, nothing will stop them from going this route.I buy tons of new games as I'm an adult(well in age at least), but I do purchase used games also. The worst part is one of the reasons for this they say is lost profit from used game sales, well too freakin bad, you got your profit from the sale of it when it was new, and we all know with the rise of DLC that also helps raise their profit margin.I think all the guys who make the amazing games we play should get their cut absolutely, I like the ability to buy a physical game and don't want to give that up.Come on Microsoft if you choose to do this and Sony doesn't, I will gladly go that way so don't do it and keep us gamers happy.
