Have you ever had that time in your life where you would look at a game console and feel bad because you couldn't afford it? Microsoft may be suffering a loss in one area but they may be looking to profit in another.
The Verge is reporting that Microsoft is gearing up to sell subsidized Xbox 360 consoles. Yes, in the same fashion that you would pay for a cell phone or a car is how you would with this. The deal is that you'll get a 4GB Xbox Slim with Kinect with a $99 down payment. In exchange, you'll be given a Xbox live subscription and be required to pay $15 each month over the course of two years. Like cell phone providers, you'll be paying a termination fee if you jump ship ahead of time.
How does the numbers add up? At Gamestop, the same console goes for $299 and the Xbox Live subscriptions will bring it up to $419. Get it subsidized and you'll wind up paying $459 at the end of term. Is the flexibility worth the extra $40? For those on tight budgets, I think it is.

More like 299 for console + 35/yr for live sub. $369 Total for 2 years vs $459. That is if you take advantage of the yearly deal on Xbox website. I got the offer for $35/year. I heard they only offer that rate during a certin time of year though...
You could ask yourself if you really need the subscription in the first place too...
