New Skullgirls Trailer Reveals a Story...Sort Of

Sure it's an old school 2D fighting game, but there is also a story to be told.

It's said that Skullgirls is a game that originally started as two games, and you can kinda see it in this latest trailer. While the game itself is merely a 2D fighter, there is a backstory involved. It involves an artifact called the Skull Heart that everyone in the game is after. Of course, as is the case with many evil artifacts, if you are impure of heart you can be twisted and turned evil by the Skull Heart. In other words, turned into...The Skull Girl! Dun, dun, dun!

The trailer also shows some of the characters competing for the Skull Heart, and they are a weird lot. There's a girl with arms sprouting out of her head, a girl with an inverted cross on her chest (kids, don't let your parents see that), and a girl that looks like a throwback to an old Popeye cartoon. Strange stuff.

Skullgirls, in addition to the Story Mode shown here, will also have an Arcade Mode, a Practice Room, tutorials, a custom soundtrack, and unranked and ranked online play. It's being developed by Reverge Labs and published by Konami and Autumn Games.

Skullgirls will be out on XBLA and PSN (though it will be called SEN at that point) later this year.
