Neowin Has Some Supposed Xbox 720 Specs

Submitted by Christopher Groux; January 23, 2013

While we haven't heard much in the form of an actual announcement about the next Xbox, there's no denying that one is on the way. With more mentions of the supposed "project Durango" and delivered dev kits than I can count, it's clear that there is something on the way from the company that just released Windows 8. According to a report published by Neowin, the next-gen console is going to be one heck of a powerhouse with specs that are more or less twice what the previous system offers now.

When it comes to processors, the console will supposedly be running an astounding eight core x64 architecture with each core clocking in at 1.6 GHz. To put that into perspective, the 360 only gets 3.2GHz total from its current processor. On top of that you'll be getting eight gigs of RAM compared to the meager 512MB found in this generation too. When it comes to graphics, it is said the unit will feature a custom D3D11.1 class 800-MHz graphics processor featuring 12 shader cores with a total of 768 threads. At it's peak, the GPU can supposedly perform 1.2 trillion floating operations a second. Sounds like a pretty strong machine to me!

How spot on do you think these specs are? I actually see them being pretty close to actual just based on what PCs are able to push these days. In a lot of senses it doesn't take a ton of logic to guess at these things.

Lol I know. The more raw power the more we'll be able to do even with the shackled resources hacks give us.

One of the rumors is that the GPU will be an AMD Radeon 8000M series (the M meaning mobile, and used in laptops). Looking at Wikipedia, the only 8000 series chip with 768 cores will be the 8770. Of course, AMD can change/update their specs and MS (and Sony) can have AMD customize the GPUs to meet their needs, so who knows what it will actually compare to.

I wonder what product defects we will see...

Lol hopefully not many. This generation, I want to see consoles that actually last, but I'm probably dreaming. They love our repair fees too much.

I'm sure MS is going to try hard not to have another RROD-type issue. This would lend credence to the rumor of using a mobile GPU (and perhaps CPU?) to reduce power, and thus produce less heat.
