It's the end of the year, so it's time for those lists we always see around this time.
Normally, these lists are retrospectives, but let's look forward to 2012. If you browse this site and others for video game news you are deluged with trailers and other little tidbits of new about games coming down the pike. So in general there are games that you are anticipating. So let's look at the most anticipated games of 2012, in no particular order.
5) Half-Life 3: OK, nothing has been confirmed about Half-Life 3. All we've seen are little hints here and there that's it's even in development. Valve is mum of course, but there have been videos here and there and some t-shirts. Of course, who knows where either came from. If it even comes out in 2012 it will be very late in the year.
4) Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance: Yes, this new action-y Metal Gear is quite a divergence from the stealth-based games that have come before, but fans of MGS - and there are a lot of them - will be checking it out for themselves if nothing else to tell everyone how much they hate it. You know you want to play it.
3) The Last of Us: This game is being developed by Naughty Dog exclusively for the PS3 and it's gotten a lot of attention ever since the VGAs. It's a post-apocalyptic, third-person survival horror game with mutant zombie things. Sounds like a winner to me!
2) Mass Effect 3: Mass Effect 2 was a masterpiece of blending the RPG with action elements and had a storyline and end sequence that was probably one of the best of all times. Mass Effect 3 looks to have more of the same with some improvements, and it's the end of the series so it will probably be even more unbelievable than the previous games. Plus, it has a multiplayer co-op mode.
1) BioShock: Infinite: BioShock 2 was more of the same, though the first BioShock was already great to begin with. 2 also had a tacked-on mulitplayer mode that wasn't all that well received. BioShock: Infinite, however, is veering off the path a bit. It's taking the action away from submerged Rapture and taking to the sky. And it's set decades before the first two games. Whether it will be a re-imagining of the series or if there will be some ties to the previous two is unknown as of yet.
What games are you looking forward to next year?
