In a recent Gears of War 3 Live Stream, Epic Games' Director of Production Rod Fergusson revealed that Gears of War 3 will be the first Xbox 360 game to reach 2000 gamerscore after the four DLCs you get with the Season Pass come out. Each will obviously be worth 250 gamerscore. Achievement hunters rejoice!
This is the first time we've seen the gamerscore level cap raised since Halo 3 was allowed to go to 1750. Other games, like Family Game Night, Dawn of War II, and Monster Hunter Frontier, have been allowed to go over the limit due to various technicalities, but by and large the rule has held.
So now the floodgates are open. The final GOW 3 DLC doesn't come out 'til spring of 2012, but you have to assume that after that every developer will be able to make their game reach 2000 gamerscore using DLC. It looks like retail games alone will still stay at 1000 gamerscore pre-DLC, but at this rate who knows if that rule will stay in place? And with a presumed new generation of consoles coming out in the next year or so who knows what all this will even mean?
Achievements (and trophies for the PS3) are often a subject for contention for many gamers. Many see them as an obvious ploy by developers to get gamers to play their game more. Others, meanwhile, see them as adding another layer to the games they already love and play to death anyway. What do you think? Do you care about achievements/trophies? What do you think about this announcement?
