Wii U Demos Have Play Limits?

Submitted by Christopher Groux; December 04, 2012

We all know how demo software works. Essentially what happens is, we are given a particular small portion of a game to play and once it's complete we are prompted with an ad to purchase the full version of the title should we wish to keep playing. It's a tried and true model that in some senses endows gamers with just a little bit of freedom and extra evidence to make sure that they are making smart purchase decisions.

Obviously some of these demos are more restrictive than others in terms of how much content they are willing to surrender, but Nintendo's Wii U seems to suggest that there are even more stipulations on the way that will alter how we try out titles. Should you download a demo from the eShop, you might be greeted with a rather curious message that tells you how many uses you have of the designated software. In most cases it will start at ten and progress downward till the demo is no longer active.

This is quite the leap for a company that in general hasn't been too notorious about restricting their users. For many, this will bring great disappointment, but what are you thinking? Is this  just the first peek we have into what the competition will be doing with their own next consoles too! Lovers of demos will have to take the hit for today, but maybe there are better days to come.

Do you think demos should have play limits? I don't really think so! I feel like as long as a developer sets enough limits in the main content why not allow for unlimited plays? I mean how much money are these guys really losing to demos?

i remember getting metal gear solid demo on my 3ds about a year ago with the same play limiter so i think it started way back earlier. i too think this is an poor and useless attempt to limit demo usage.

Yeah I feel the same way as you guys. I feel like it should just be up to the developers to place the limits within the software itself. Under very few circumstances would people actually just stick to a demo for long enough that the company loses money.

I think their doing this to stop hackers. Just look at the psp and the save file exploits that came out for psn demos. If they do this they can stop the hackers because you would only be able to load up a game demo with an save exploit and run custom code a few times.

This will make some customers mad. What I think should work with demos is to give the user about an hour of gameplay for long games and half hour for short games. That would give the users just about enough to help them make their decision whether they want to buy the game or not. This comes as a surprise because Nintendo never been like this, my guess is that they feel that the WII U will be their better system for years to come.

Really?? All Nintendo consoles but a few handhelds have been region locked and demos on the 3DS have this same use limit.

Not much of a leap at all the way I see it.
