In the days prior to the Wii U's launch, we have heard quite a bit about the hardware specifications present in the system. Many analysts have boiled things down however to say that in terms of the main GPU, you are essentially getting a souped up version of what we already see in the Xbox 360. The system has what has been noted to be an updated AMD Radeon GPU which offers twice as much RAM than what Microsoft gave up all those years ago. That being said, you would think porting games like Call of Duty Black Ops II from the 360 would be a snap right?
In some senses, this has shown to be the case. Graphically, both titles perform almost exactly the same tight down to the native 880x720 resolution. The animations look slick and high quality compared to what was seen on Nintendo's last console. However, while the graphics look great, many have said that this game (and many others) suffer from noticeable frame rate drops when there is a lot of action present on the screen. Where the GPU checks out in terms of horsepower, this more or less just leaves the CPU as the main culprit behind such issues. Only time will tell how the less powerful hardware might impact game production in the future, but it might mean developers will have to make more graphical cuts to offer a smoother experience. Nintendo has always taken a more refined approach to hardware, let's just hope this strategy doesn't hold back their dreams for greatness in gaming.
