Having been launched for just twenty four hours, the scene was shocked this morning to find news that supposedly some users over at the NeoGAF forums were accidentally given access to the system debug menu by probing around in Miiverse. As the screenshots suggest, users had the ability to access a list of administrators, regenerate passwords and even send messages to developers should they choose to do so. With that kind of open door to the console's back end, you would expect that a Wii U hacking scene could be developing sooner than we anticipated, but as usual, Nintendo has responded with a statement to squash of all our hopes and dreams (for now.)
According to a report by GamesIndustry International the company has stated that "It has come to our attention that some people were able to access a mock up menu on Miiverse following the launch of Wii U in the US...Please note that this was only a mock up menu and has now been removed and is not accessible." Well that was fun while it lasted am I right? Unfortunately leaving this supposed mock up installed was just a minor flub from Nintendo, and its subsequent removal means that most likely nothing will come of it. If you're looking for some gamepad homebrew, it appears then that you'll have to wait just a little bit longer for that. Until then, go enjoy some of the great launch games that are out there!
