PSP Ceasing Production?

Submitted by HolmesInFive; January 17, 2012

The PSP scene has been a bit of a ghost town lately.  Little to say in the ways of big news, the new-ish PSP E1000 was somewhat of a flunk, and CFW development seems to have come to a grinding halt.  This may be due to the up and coming worldwide release of the PS Vita, and it seems like the Vita may be causing some other repurcussions in game retailers.

Working in retail, it seems that competing retailers are slowly decreasing their stock count for the PSP 3000 and GO.  The store in which I work in is clearing out their PSP stock indefinitely, as well as all the UMD's up in the shelves collecting dust behind the PS3 games. Other stores more focused specifically on gaming seem to be focusing on promoting the sale of second hand consoles, so as to clear them out a bit quicker and possibly even get a debit back for any unsold new PSP's.

Much like the Guitar Hero article I posted a short while back, I suggest that if you are interested in any UMD's or getting a PSP new or old, now is the time to do it.  Who knows how long PSP's will still be on the shelves for.

Note: I am in Australia.  While this seems to be the trend in my area, this may not be the same worldwide

Honestly though in a year or so the psp is going to be viewed as an old, outdated device. Sort of like the gameboy all over again. =P But it does not mean its still not fun.

Tsk tsk. We always knew Sony would stoop to this level. I'd say they will be avaliable  here in the U.S. for a while. They still sell the Go models here, so who knows...

how is stopping the production of an old product stooping to a level

it has always been this way...we dont make wheels out of stone and wood that often anymore do we? no because thats the old and not very pratical way of making them

only thing sony is doing is getting rid of an old system for a newer more powerful product, dont get me wrong i love the psp i have 3 myself and use them every day

Where I live many retailers stopped selling psp's and umds ages ago. Very few game shops still sell them.

is it still worth it to buy a new psp since the scene is pretty much dead? if not i'm gonna buy a 3DS.

(note that i still have a fully working psp-1000, but its getting old and broken)

Well, they are very cheap right now thats for sure. If you want to get one new instead of used you should act soon. But if you are not afraid to buy a used psp you have plenty of time to think about it...

You already forget Sony said the PlayStation brand would have a 10 year life cycle [for their hardware]? This is just proof that nothing Sony says should be taken as the gospel.

The psp has lived a happy life and all those great memories. I remember when hacking a psp was new thing now its all over.

It is going to be like all the old systems, I mean, people still play N64, why do you think we have Daedalus? Who knows the PSP's future, but in my opinion, I don't think the VITA will last long. So don't worry PSP lovers. Did you know that some

old systems still have games coming out? I don't think this is the PSP's last stand. For now, the VITA's fate is Sealed and Money Mouth

Coldbird here: do you really think so?

We are working behind the scenes to provide a long time alternative to PSN online gaming even after Sony dumps the PSP...

Nothings stopping, we are working behind closed curtains that is all... and even that isnt the truth really as I keep posting progress on the wololo forums.

PSP will remain the better console (in comparison to the Vita) for quite a while...

If this truly is the case, the psp never lived up to its full potential

I got emulators and PS1 games on mine and I have a large collection of PSP ISO's....this makes the PSP real nice even though it is dying, these are extending the life for mine....the hacking and homebrew scene is pretty much dead but with the 6.60 ME CFW, all you need is a few homebrew programs like Hellcat and the other important ones

I hope you have legally atained these roms, isos and eboots...Because stealing is just plainly put wrong. But I have to admit, Nintendo is not going to die from people downloading snes roms....but still. When you take new games without paying it really is bad for buisness. Just my five cents. Although don't get me wrong, for all I know ypu legally own everything.

I think hackers (us) will keep on with the psp while sony brings on new handhelds. I bet 10 years from now psp will released again, no f.king touchscreen, no f.king rear pad, probably 2 joysticks. Sony will realize psp was the best and will stay the best. But with the adavanced technology this might be of no attention
