The PSP Genesis Competition! *Updated*

Submitted by greg; February 09, 2011

Say what now? Say PSP Genesis Competition! Yes, yes y'all -- time to pull out the big guns, because if you thought Homebrew Idol (1, 2 and 3) was big, then you haven't been reading Wololo's blog... Wololo recently announced the PSP Genesis Competition, which is no doubt set to be the largest PSP homebrew competition ... ever!
All the big boys have banded together -- npt, Wololo, PSP Slim Hacks and us, Dashhacks -- to bring you nothing but the best in homebrew and prizes. Prizes? The estimated cumulative value of all prizes in this competition is $3200! That's a lot of hundos. And as I understand it, should more sponsors step up, that number has potential to grow ... *ahem* pspgen *grin* Certain competition details are still being ironed out and things are subject to change, so because of that I ask you click here to read up on the submission guidelines, the prize pool breakdown, judging and sponsorship info, etc. That page will always have the latest news concerning anything PSP Genesis. Mad props to all the sponsors and good luck to those who throw it down in the PSP Genesis Competition! Update: Awesome! Exophase and pspgen have joined up, making PSP Genesis that much cooler. Now there is more than $4300 at stake. Also don't forget about our PSP theme-off! You can win some dough for crafting a cool CTF theme.

I wish I had the skills to enter... I've made only a few apps such as an adhoc messenger, an infrastructure chat room (very "hacky" as I had no idea what I was doing at the time), one game that I can't find ANYWHERE (rage!), a "shell" type app, and a SePlugins manager that works flawlessly but is missing some functionality that I wanted to implement. Also a bunch of random shit that I threw together for other people.

Anyone got an idea I could borrow? ;)

I am very, very excited to see what comes from this. When I first started planning this I had no idea how it was going to get, but Wololo and I have been planning it, along with Hellcat and Lampworker, add Davee to that and minus me you have our judge pool! : ) So, get ready, open up vi and get coding... there is a lot to be gained from this: both money and scene credit. : )

Talk to you again soon and thanks to all who enter,

The PSP needs:
1) A browser with updated plugins (like Flash) THAT WORKS ON 6.20 TN and not only on older CFW/HENs
2) An FTP client (like WiiXplorer for the Wii) which allows the transfer of files from and to the PC without the need of a USB cable and again, it should be compatible with 6.20 TN.

About the DS emulator... the DS sucks so an emulator is not needed.

*I'd say we need a proper mp4 player that doesn't require converting.
*A new CFW (We all hope for this)
*An app like pspdisp that allows wireless connection to your PC outside of the network (I would kill for that, too bad that won't happen until the NGP is released)
*A custiom browser that can download files and save them in the psp wherever you want
*A app that can extract said files, coupled with a file manager.

2. THAT'S FINE I GUESS
3. SO WHY DA FUCK U NEED THAT. PSP IS FOR PORTABLE MEANS ONLY. (WELL WHY WON'T YOU JUST TRY A PC GAME IF U WANT COOL DISPLAY.)
4. LAZY :P

I hear a lot of interesting sounding ideas being tossed about. I do hope we see someone make use of bluetooth on the Go, but they would have to keep in mind that ince it works on 1 of 4 psp models, I would think it could have drawbacks too. I would LOVE IT, personally.

I also think that a new cfw, ie a 6.4x or whatever is CURRENT say a month before the competition is over. If someone got a CFW working up to the latest OFW release when the compo was done, I can only imagine that if it was STABLE, it would do VERY well. However, not being a judge but your "host" for this competition, I can not say for sure.

I hope we see ALL SORTS of different types of entries here, and as long as you have a MIPS binary running, you will end up being ok. I think a media player that plays all the new video codes would be great. I think new emulators either for systems we haven't seen on here yet, or simply a different emulator that is faster or has more features would be cool. I think applications that do things that people want / need done would be great. Think out of the box here people, there is A LOT of prizes and even more important FUN to be had here. Make the scene proud! It just goes to show you what an incredible scen the PSP scene is, that we were able to announce this now and we are getting the type of responses we are getting, this late in the PSP's history. I think it just goes to show what a masterpiece of hardware it is, and even more so with firmware running on it that allows us to do things that sony never intended.

Looking forward to seeing all of your entires!!

Good luck to all, let's make this the most fun PSP contest we've had yet!!!

Regards,

npt

Some of these ideas sound really cool in theroy and others are just people trying to cut one step out of a already easy process. I feel bad for those on 6.37 or higher because, of this contest a lot of the top hackers are going to put there cfw on hold till after the contest.

I for one would love to see a script program that would translate from japanese kanji characters into japanese romji in game. I can speak japanese but, never had the time to learn kanji, katakana or hiragana. If this was created it wouldn't be hard to eventually make a "fansub ingame plugin translator". Yes, because the Japanese sentance structure is completely different than english it would still be a "bad translation" but it would be something at least for us who can't read kanji.

Just imagine this would end the stupid questions about "when will a english version be released" and would help solve some of the region issues. As a fan of japanese games, and sims, this would unlock a whole new world of game play. Because, let's face it we only get a handfull of the games quartly here in the US and Europe that Japan releases on a weekly basis.

is a proper updated version for the psp to act as a controller via usb port. fusa pad is great but not alot of games support it and the other thing that suqs is the button map. so i would instantlly cast my winnre vote right there (thats right devs)

many DS games give you the chance to use the stylus for commands or play using the buttons and even if not, latest version of DSONPSP had a "virtual" stylus (L+R) ... it can be done but for the look of the previous attempts it would run slow as hell

1-signed iso loader is all we need.
2-if that is not enough tnen I guess a Browser that actually can browse and save would be nice.
3- DS emulation is possible, DSONPSP remapped the touch function with (L+R)thumbstick ... the problem is that there's not enough memory to emulate at a decent framerate and render 3D ... if someone could make something like no$gba it would be sweet just for Zelda, Final fantasy and Castlevania.
4-a full homebrew game with the quality of Zombie Desert's demo may be good as well...
5-A full flash player ^__^

My most wanted homebrew is:
1.A good full on Mame emulator
2.^If not, i reeeaaaly want a Cps3 emulator that runs all of the games perfectly(There are only about six) with adhoc.
3.Implement a way to play youtube vids and whatnot on pspkvm. (Gotube sucks now)
4.A way to post on 4chan from the psp. It is no longer possible as the captcha doesn't generate. Or does anyone know if there is a possible way?

A smooth, fully working SNES emulator would make my day. To play FF6 without the chop chop chop on the world map, Mario RPG without the chop chop choppy battles, or Starfox without the chop chop choppy everything would make a lot of people cream in their jeans. Or at the very least, a TV Output option for fullscreen play on a television (psp screen starts to hurt the eyes after awhile with its good but trailing reolution, coupled with inevitable scratching and particle trapping).

Why are so much ppl asking for impossible things for a psp? (like emulating systems above n64 >.<).
There is a LOT of possible things NOT yet complete, I'll start from them, EX: A lot of NES rom compatibilities issues and some emulator's improvements like letting users use a custom color palette or just getting 60fps constantly using less cpu, a full-speed and bug-less SNES emulation, GBA emulation improvements, like fixing Summon Night 2 battles crazy fps drop, a decent emulation for the other systems like for ex: pc engine (which emulation SUX), a proper files explorer, and u can go on from here.

well first thig is first you have to know wat kind of psp you have (1000[phat], 2000[slim], or 3000) and what kind of OFW (offical firmware) you have (3.20-5.50, it cannot be above this unless you refer to the newest and harder to havk with firmwares) next thing to do is to download a program called psp grader (google or youtube it), i prefer pspgrader v008 it works for psp slim also thats the noob way of doing it and im too lazy to run through the long way XD... so theres you go and if you have any questions about much anything on psp hacks ask any of us here or youtube the video cuz you can download that for u to keep if u no how to.

anywho good luck and try not to brick it in the process

I use the PSP mostly for my Masters studies. Funny, right? I carry PDF and txt copies of research journals I downloaded in my PSP so that I could read (using BookR) while waiting for the bus or something. Also useful in the library since I don't have to carry my notebook around much. I also used the internet a lot on the PSP for quick web research while using the wifi in the library.
So for those who have the time and skills I really could use:

1. a better flash/java supported internet browser with full QWERTY on screen keyboard so that I don't have to carry my notebook around anymore.

2. a document writer with on screen QWERTY keyboard for joting ideas on the road or while waiting.

3. EXCEL like apps for data collection.

My thanks and good luck to all who entered. Wish I have the skills to enter.

PS: Using a PSP in the library does get you funny looks.

I hate PRO-A. It disabled my UMD Drive and it wont run any homebrew or isos at all. and also, why cant remotejoylite work with original PRO? then i could actually use it for something.

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

If it's not possible to make an RPG Maker VX/XP port, at least an RPG Maker 2k3 (fully functional) would rly ROCK!

here are the things i have thought:
1. a mugen emulator
2. a good full screen AV out plugin (besides fusa sd)
3.a dictionary or a language translator.

That's not impossible, obviously you are just running around websites ranting about things you know nothing of. DS emulators have already been made for the psp, N64 emulators are being made for the psp and ps2 emulators are also being made for the psp. And most of these, to my knowledge, work rather fine...

Ans 1. Already supported in Sony original browser
And 2. Download PSPWrite by ZX-81 (only for homebrew)
Ans 3. Google it up
