Homebrew Idol Update

Submitted by greg; April 05, 2008

While we're at the common standstill, which seemingly occurs every couple of weeks, I'll share a little PSP Hacks Homebrew Idol update with y'all... The deadline was April 30th; however, as MK2k says, "good software takes time." So in effort to meet the needs of developers, we'll extend the contest further... Currently we have two entries -- Pirata Nervo's NervOS and MK2k's Chipmunk Physics port / demonstration. If you have the skills to code and you wanna clock some extra dough, see here for complete contest details. The new deadline... Ah, well... Another month -- May 31st... How's that sound?

This is truly the dullest contest I've seen in my life...only 2 entries!? Wtf is up with that? I bet if there is only 3 entries by the next deadline, they'll probably make the deadline another month but w/e

whats so hard about it?
DA did all the work of firmware. NOT with homebrew. he is saying anyone with a hacked psp is thankful to him because it wouldnt of been possible without him. (it would but it wouldnt be as good)
this is a homebrew comp. not a firmware comp.

Im thinking maybe he doesn't have the prize money, so he extended the contest haha.
I also agree this is a really sad contest. I was the one that said "wow... looks like they are really trying to get people to make stuff for the psp" when this contest first came around. Because at the time of that contest... psp hacks was at a stand still.
I think its a lame that the deadline was so far away in the first place, now they are extending it?! Get the fuck outta here... haha.

I personally think that unless anything else is entered, that the Physics port should win. I know that the NervOS is a pretty good success on its own in the means of how quickly it got as far as it has, but its nothing new if ya know where I'm coming from?

I think a decent physics engine is definitely a good thing for the homebrew community as it opens up a big amount of possibilities :)

Maybe if someone used it to make a Soldat clone, I would indeed be very highly impressed :D

Yup, everything that could be done has been done it would seem. It's unfortunate that people haven't picked up old projects or tried remaking them from the ground up, like Daedelus. There's lots of room for improvement there but that's never gunna continue, which is a shame. At least there's plenty of stuff already available for the PSP and it's still an awesome portable. Guess we'll have to wait for the next gen Sony portable to have some new hardware to play with, exploit, and develop for.

how about someone finds a exploit in the current firmware to allow ppl who want to downgrade downgrade i have been having trouble finding a pandora battery and i don have a homebrew capable psp to make one

Reply

# Griffin 2008-04-06 17:04
There's been no reason to make downgraders anymore ever since the pandora battery technique was developped... the ability to downgrade any past present and future firmware is all we need. Buy a battery, find someone in your local area that has a custom psp to make you one, or find someone on the internet that you can ship a battery to so they convert it for you. Don't expect to see anymore downgraders.

Not true. The April 30th Deadline is known now since quite some weeks, so I can imagine quite some devs relied on that and had released in the last couple of days before April 30th then. No need to worry about entries now...

it would have to interlace the video output and the games are hardcoded to have progressive scan output. it could be possible but it would take alot of resources. if i could code i would play with it but i realy like the idea.

The PSP scene is halfway dead already. There really ain't nothing left to do on it except the shit thats been created already. Kinda sucks too, because I just got my PSP hacked last year on Thanksgiving. And even now as it's hacked I do find myself falling asleep because the shits getting boring. If only someone could build a time machine back to when the PSP first got hacked...Hey maybe I can make a homebrew that can take you back in time with your PSP...Fuck, Time Travel aint even possible...or is it?

# Griffin 2008-04-06 22:17
Haha funny you should mention that... Try the TimeMachine :P It's a shame that only lets you go back in time firmware-wise :P

Why is EVERY ONE ACTING DUMB????!

Usually, The last few days before the deadline... we
will see a LOT OF ENTRIES. Nothing to worry abt (@greg). The new deadline's okay for me.

$500 is quite a lot of money! NO PSP SCENE IS ####NOT#### Dead.

$500 is just to tempt the coders...

Oh well. I don't know about much competition...

Well, this is going in a positive way. the people will have more time to code.

I think this should be named a lil better
"PSP-Hacks Homebrew Competition 2008". Also the news should be sent to all websites like QJ, maxconsole, DCemu, etc.

Ah, another month. Good stuff :D
I had just found out about the competition before this extension and have taken this current week off work to work on an entry. The extra month will come in handy as I am exploring a whole new field so have to learn how it works before i can recreate it.

See you in the forums!
