Flashing Fun with PRX Modules

Submitted by greg; October 22, 2008

Here are two PRX modules for you CFW 5.00 M33 users --
  1. popcorn.prx (v2) -- courtesy of Dark_AleX. It's actually an update from the previously released fix. Flash popcorn.prx to "flash0:/kd" to correct PSOne/PSX compatibility issues.
  2. npinstaller_plugin.prx & version.txt -- seemingly the only files changed in firmware 5.01 from 5.00. This should correct the larger capacity PRO Duos from producing an insufficient space error. Flash npinstaller_plugin.prx to "flash0:/vsh/module" and version.txt to "flash0:/vsh/etc."

not me... although, I need to first "sign up" and then enter my existing user credentials - right now they're not saved. I can't get to that screen - "A system software update is required... blah blah."

ahh I had my NFO previously saved. Although I was getting that software update required error all morning till I applied the npinstaller - So im not sure...

Only thing diff from the instructions was I didn't overwrite the existing files. I renamed them first then copied the new ones over. Turned off the PSP then back on and once it tested out, then I deleted the old stuff.

the version.txt file goes in vsh/etc

the npinstaller_plu gin.prx goes in vsh/module

You may need to disable hide protected operating system files within explorer to view the vsh/module directory

i figured it out greg and daniel:
if you are using Xplora to flash the files into flash0 then delete the original files BEFORE you cut and paste the new ones in - the overwrite doesnt seem to work, it just leaves the old files. hope this helps.

You need hidden files and folders turned on on your computer.
At the top, go to View>Folder Options
Choose the View tab, scroll down and find "Hidden Files and Folders" and select "Show hidden files and folders"
They will now "magically" appear

Replaced both the .PRXs and the version.txt. Now I seem to be able to get past the version update screen but I can't download anything. It always seems to freeze and cause the PSP to reset, or it stops at a blue screen until I press circle to go back... Anyone else have this problem or, even better, know how to fix this? It allowed me to download stuff before the 5.01 update so I'm wondering if I should have just kept the original npinstaller_plu gin.prx!!!

(On a brighter note... At least I can finally play FF7 again!)

Update to 5.0 m33-2. Go in the recovery menu, then to configuration, and enable the "Use version.txt"

It's a no go for me.

I decrypted 5.01 using the 5.00 PSARdumper and flashed the "vsh/etc/version.txt" file.

Then I seen this post and copied the text over the text in the "vsh/etc/version.txt" file.

Still nothing.

I finally managed to fix the PSN Store frozen download problem on my PSP... I just used Psardumper to get the original npinstaller_plu gin.prx from the 5.00 OFW update and used it to replace the one in the VSH/MODULE folder. I don't know if it's the sort of thing I'd recommend but it is working now without any problems (And I have a 8GB SanDisk MS)

(As this is an old thread,I will copy and paste this solution into the M33-3 thread just to spread the word!)

@ BonBon
You may have figured it out by now because a lot of people made the same mistake and it's already been solved but just in case...
You need to Unhide system files as well, which is a different thing to just showing the hidden files and folders... It's a separate check box just a litte under the Hidden Files and Folders one.

UPDATE: I decided to experiment a little as I wasn't convinced that my solution was completely satisfactory.
I used psardumper on the 5.01 OFW update to get the newer npinstaller_plu gin.prx. Seeing as I am still able to download from the PS Store I can only assume the problem was with the way Dark Alex dumped the plugin for his earlier fix. So if you have problems downloading from the PS Store my advice is to dump the plugin yourself using Psardumper and the 5.01 OFW update as I believe the file is affected by the model number (Or even serial number...)of the PSP it is dumped on.

How would I go about getting this to work on my android tablet? I think it is a 2.1, but when I click the Feed button it pops up a question mark. This site is cool, but would be better if I could read it in bed.
