Daedalus R12 Released! N64 Emulation!

Submitted by greg; June 26, 2007

Wow -- two heavy hitters in one day! Mark it on your calendar folks; the day of earth shattering PSP releases, June 26th! First we saw Noobz' 3.50 firmware downgrader, and now StrmnNrmn unleashes the highly anticipated Daedalus R12, bringing Nintendo 64 emulation goodness to the PSP! Can it get any better than this?! R12 primarily focuses on minor compatibility and graphical fixes; there are no optimizations for this build. Super Smash Bros. (SSB) is now running much smoother than the previous Daedalus versions. With dynarec enabled you'll achieve ~ 30-40 fps; still not quite full speed. Although it's playable with frameskip set to 1 or 2. StrmnNrmn also mentions:
Goldeneye is also running in R12. Although the intro sequence is running very quickly and with few noticable graphical issues, a lot more work is needed to it running at a playable framerate in-game. I think it's a good start though, and something to get excited about for the future :)
Daedalus R12 changelog:
  • [!] Fixed issue preventing Goldeneye from being loaded.
  • [!] Fixed dynarec for Goldeneye.
  • [!] Fixed dynarec for Super Smash Bros.
  • [!] Fix various texturing issues with 4bpp and small or non power-of-2 textures.
  • [!] Fix TexRect instructions with negative s/t components.
  • [!] Fixed the HUD in Mario 64 (broken in R11.)
  • [!] Fixed lights in F3DEX2 microcodes.
  • [+] Correctly implement instruction fetch exceptions, improving compatibility.
  • [+] Improved floating point compatibility.
  • [+] Correctly handle mask_s/mask_t tile values.
  • [+] Implemented a few custom blend modes.
  • [+] Screenshots just cover visible viewport.
Thanks for the countless emails everyone. Download Daedalus R12 for: fw 1.00 | fw 1.50+ | src code - source: StrmnNrmn

Mario Kart, Super Mario 64, Super Smash Brothers....
those are all working fine.

The only one ive tried that hasn't been very good is Ocarina of Time. Very laggy and still has some graphical glitches. That may take some time to fix...

Conkers bad fur day -- Takes along time to load up and when it does its FPS are really low

Star wars SOE -- Texture - sec 5
frame skip -1
= no go, funny clicking sound that trurned out to be the main theme song.

texure = off
Frame skip = 3

It took about 7 minutes ,finaly there was a screen. as soon as you push start it crashes thow

DevHook supported 1.62 IE-D is a different kind of custom firmware - one you can add to devhook.

3.40 OE is a more popular and easier to use custom firmware with built in properties like playing ISO games directly from stick instead of having to go through an ISO loader. HEN is homebrew enabler. Usually accompanied by a downgrader.

You guys are absolutely crazy in thinking that games like PD and CBFD will EVER run at full speed.

CBFD is around 64mb and the PSP only has 32mb so how on earth can it emulate the entire N64 system, the rom and still have enough memory? and no you cannot stream a rom it has to be loaded in its entire state. The Xbox had double the CPU power and ram and still didnt emulate 64mb roms well at all.

To be honest, our best bet is if someone down the line manages to port UltaHLE, which is by far the fastest emulator out there, it may only run 15 or so games, but the PSP could actually get them running in full speed.

Bottom line, dont expect decent N64 emulation on PSP..... period. Lets hope though we can get the tiny games like M64 which are only around 4mb to run fully.

Wow, you are soooo wrong. You can buy bigger memory sticks and still hold cbfd. CPU power does deal with emulation power, but thats just it, emulation. Porting emulators is a bad idea when it come to the psp. Just look at the Gameboy Advanced Emulators. The best windows/linux/mac gba emulator is vba, when ported to the psp it could go much farther than a quater of the speed. Then comes along GPSP with it's high compatibility and full fps games. Basically, the emulator has to be written so that is uses software to emulate hardware on the psp. Daedalus is getting far with this emulator and porting UltraHLE (which is btw not the best emulator) will not be able to run on the psp very well.

Can someone please tell me why in the hell this emulator runs even slower than my R11? What the hell is wrong? To make matters worse, it has to take a loading breaking every 5 seconds and the frame rate is terrible on EVERY game. Mario 64 worked much better for me last time, so something must be wrong.

# Bobby 2007-06-28 02:59
To specify, Mario 64 runs at a PATHETIC 3.4 frames per second, while on R 11 There were certain areas in the game that ran full speed With sound. What the feck is going on with this piece of shit?

Hopefully none concerning Daedulus,

N64 on PSP is a pipe dream, especially with this emulator due to limitations, feel free to rant on about being ungreatfull at peoples views, since poor old princess you seems to get very upset and enjoy playing your 85-10% full speed N64 games without sound, because out of all the people that have it how many do you honestly think will actually play it? giving 'credit' isnt going to make it run any better.

and funny how memory according to you isnt a problem, yet the Xbox had to use VMM to bump its ram up to 90 odd megs yet apperntly 32mb is just fine LMFAO. Oh sorry i forgot about the secret flux capacitor inside it which only caches the textures it needs on the screen, thats why the Dreamcast has a N64 emulator too, oh wait.

great work ,this emu is improving ,golden eye now runs and this is a big break through as far as im concerned ,i have however noticed that the emu runs slower on r12 but this is perfectly normal as new fixes are in place other things may break but on a high note these issues normaly are easy noticed and fixed as well.

i still dont understand tho ,can pj64 be ported to psp ? if so why hasent it been done yet ,or is it the case that it wouldnt matter if this was pj64 or daedalus becase everything is down to the graphics and audio plugin ? i dont think so tho
as working on speed issues amd memory latency
would indicate the author is trying to optimise daedalus core for psp.

this then still brings me back to plugins ,cant the author try different plugins or is this a silly idea
seeing as the core is still at an early stage for optimisation.

one thing is for sure ,daedalus psp is impressive
even at 1fps but i really wish the author would
take the top 10 n64 games and get them all running first ,doesnt matter if they are 1fps as long as they run ,dont crash after title screen
and obviously dont have major graphics glitches.

Reply

# Will Roger 2007-06-28 08:36
Its not really a plugin issues, the main problem with PJ64 is it requires alot of raw power and ram to get going, It requires atleast a 800mhz CPU and 128mb of ram, so to try and get it running on a 333mhz and 32mb of ram machine just aint going to happen soon.

As i said before, our only hope to get a good N64 emulator is if someone ports over UltraHLE, it only requires a 400mhz CPU and is by far the best chance to be able to play atleast some games with full speed and sound.

I have no doubt that someone will, however usually in the scene the easy stuff gets ported first and the harder stuff last when there isnt anything left.

You obviously didn't read my comment did you? And yes, I "Must fucking stupid" because I can clearly see when an emulator somehow is working slower for me than it is for everyone else. All I was stating was that Games that used to run fast for me in the last release (such as Mario 64, or Micro Machines) now run as if they were from Daedelus 1 or 2. Quit giving me a hard time because you can't offer a legitimate reason why the hell this program is having this behavior.

You can get 4gb memory stick but the PSP still only has 32mb of internal ram, the rom needs to be loaded fully into the memory, unless they can use virtual memory to somewhat use the MC as ram itself it wont happen (and doing that is extremly difficult itself), UltraHLE isnt the best i agree, however it IS the fastest emulator and the least power hungry and our best chance of getting something running full speed.

Your not,

I havent even botherd with R12, since apperntly all it does is make SSB run at 60% speed but has broken other games.

I have R11 and M64 without sound ran at around 95-60% speed depending on whats going on the screen, your best bet is to try that.

Well that's genius! "Hey! Let's make some slight improvements for ONE game that'll sacrifice playability of all the other games!" Absolutely brilliant....

That being said, I could care less about SSB or Goldeneye being playable. Why on Earth do people prefer playing the original Smash Bros over much better 64 games anyways? I don't see why they don't run with the ball and improve speeds for ALL games that have already been working great so far, instead of focusing on one game that is still a chore to play and isn't even that good to begin with. Frankly, I don't think Goldeneye or Smash Bros will ever be 100%, but Mario 64 was almost there and I'd rather them focus their energy on something worthwhile like that. I feel like this release is such a waste. Looks like I'll have to go back to R11 :(

okay heres my take. porting is just not the answer when it comes to the psp. that lesson was learned with gpsp. my take is that if deadalus is written correctly itll support basic game like mario 64. NO WAY IS IT POSSIBLE TO RUN CBFD. but i dont think it should be called a pipe dream. people just expect too much. im satisfied with mario 64(which runs faster on r12 for me, must be a rom problem). now the ram issue could be solved somehow if it could be virtualized, it is a posibility.

Hell even if it coulndt load yet and ROM at all or even to anything but take up space YOU SHOULD BE GRATEFUL that the person took his/her personal time to develop somthing to release to the public free of charge in hopes of making somthing people might like. IF YOU DONT LIKE IT EITHER MAKE A BETTER ONE YOUR SELF OR STFU seriously. Im betting every single whiner here hasnt even coded a "Hello World". If you knew anything about coding and/or emulation you would know this is no simple task. This guy has and is working hard on this project and I for one would like to thank him for his work thus far, and I look forward to future releases from Daedalus and anyone else good enough to spend the time to make somthing some of us might like to use.

If you dont agree you are some f*king childish little jack a$$ and you seriously need to reevaluate what your so upset about.

Okay, you have a 64 gallon container.....now pour ALL contents without spilling a single drop into a 32 Gallon container.

I may not know much about the PSP hardware, per say, but Memory Stick, and Internal RAM have nothing to do with one another. For emulation you are 100% dependent on internal RAM for speed. If you can't fit the application AND the ROM into memory, you will not be able to reach 100% speed...

You have 2 kinds of people...those who are grateful....

And those who are ungrateful.

Grateful people give complements, and offer to help with ideas.

Ungrateful people complain, and scorn everything unless it suits their desires.

Grateful people don't deserve to have such wonderful software made, but they see it as a blessing.

Ungrateful people think the software was written for them, they don't give thanks for anything.

Grateful people thank the authors.

Ungrateful people need to get off their @$$es and write their own programs to suit their desires, and not depend on others to make it for them.

I love it when Burkie gets called out. The Toronto media still will not do it but other media and NHL players not have a problem with it.
