Daedalus R11 Is Near!

Submitted by greg; April 29, 2007

StrmnNrmn shares some details as he prepares for the next iteration of his Nintendo 64 emulator. After refactoring how Daedalus handles textures, R11 shows a 5-10% speed enhancement -- quite impressive! But, the most noteworthy fact, 8MB can now be permanently allocated for the Expansion Pak! And if you're [in the EDT timezone] reading this now: 1) you're up too late, and 2) Daedalus R11 will also include the added benefit of remembering individual rom preferences! A few finishing touches remain and StrmnNrmn should have R11 out the door this upcoming weekend.
The most significant change I've made is to fix a memory leak in the texture cache. I mentioned last week that I'd discovered that the texture cache was the biggest culprit for soaking up memory. It turned out that despite my fixes and support for 4-bit and 8-bit palettised textures, I was still running out of memory in certain situations. I did a bit more investigating, and discovered a resource leak that had been in the texture cache since it was first written (probably 7 or 8 years ago now!)
Read Full Article In the meantime, check out Daedalus R10.

Okay, when you port a gamecube emulator to the psp with 100% compatibility then you can talk. daedalus has Super Mario 64 and thats all I really need. If you need to cum in your pants with golden eye and zelda and other heavy stuff. And when others thought it was impossible for the n64 to be playable on the psp, daedalus proved em wrong. I bet he's gonna prove us wrong again when he finds all the answers and fixes everything. When he gets 100% compatibility and speed who will be the one talking?

HEY u guys wanna stop being a bunch of DICK FUCKS???? do u know how much time and effort is put into making daedalus?? or maybe u are a bunch of noobed out 12 years olds who cant fucking remember what an n64 really is, it was one of the best systems ever sure the graphics weren't as good as some other systems but it had some of the best games ever to come out, people all over the fucking world still play goldeneye, there still hasnt been a better zelda then ocarina of time and super smash bros. was one of the best fighting games ever created much more fun than mortal kombat (not to bash it at all) and there are many more games that people are going to be fucking happy to play, you guys shouldnt take unless you make a better progress then StrmnNrmn on your own emulator if u want og ahead and try to port gamecube to psp if u even can find a code to start with

Listen, you guys really need to wise up. This is an open source project that is being worked on. Notice that there hasn't been a final release of the product. Do you think Microsoft Windows worked as well as it does when it was first released? HA! Yet you still use it considering all the bugs and problems. Give it time... the project will be stream lining soon enough. Also, don't bash it unless you understand the complications for porting games to different consoles. so... STFU! :)

"Wow..." to some of the comments on here on how much it sucks. How many of you know C++? I mean at least what the heck it means; nonetheless, knowing how to use it. Not that Daedalus is written in that language, since I have no idea.

In addition, this shows the problem with releasing software early. It tarnishes the creator's reputation in the future even if the program is eventually completed and fully working.

It's more or less theoretically impossible for this emulator to ever run at full speed. The object is to tweak it to the point where it is at least playable without making you want to pull your own nut sack hair out. If you say it sucks, you're an idiot. It's a technological marvel. If you say, "wow, I can't wait for it to be done so I can play zelda at full speed" you too are an idiot. Enjoy it for what it is - nothing more, nothing less.

PSP was not designed to emulate the N64. The PSP was designed with PS1 emulation in mind. That said, the N64 has a processor 3 times faster than that of the PS1. You guys got all of that down so far? Good. We're talking about emulating a 94mhz machine, on a 333mhz machine. In general, emulation usually requires a factor of 10x to emulate a system "fully" at full speed with sound. The fact that Daedalus can do all it can with such limited resources is BEYOND amazing. You people that are expecting this emulator will ever be perfect are kidding yourselves. Strmm can't magically make your PSPs run at 600mhz to make it possible. And the person saying Dreamcast is next... that's BEYOND laughable. The Dreamcast was 200mhz. While it's theoretical that you could write an emu for the PSP, to even imagine that you'd get a 2-3fps on it with 1% game compatibility would be pushing it.

It's cute that some of you people are ultra idealistic, but understand the limits of hardware. Likewise, it's cute that some of you are total assholes who know nothing of the hardware and think Strmm is just a bad coder. As some have mentioned before, if you think you can do better, you're free to try.

5-10%...
most games have more than 10 fps without sound anyway. Without sound and with frameskip, you can go to around 35 fps. 5-10% more with 35fps is 36.75-38.5, which is better. still, he is updating it with 5-10% more each time over the last 3 or 4 updates of daedalus. thats between 30-40% faster (actually more than triple with frameskip and the major update)

For anyone who demises Daedalus,

you are truly a foolish moronic kid who has no knowledge of any kind.
To go about a task of putting an N64 emulator onto a PSP is certainly not easy. The N64 is a powerful system next too the PSP.
The emulators perfection does not look forthcoming because N64 emulation on the PSP draws the line of psp emulation, so its going to be rough for awhile. These guys make you homebrew and emulators too show you there progress to give you an idea of what they could possibly have on our PSPs in the future, for free!
So go about yourself and show a little respect.

actually if you do a bit of research, youl see the psp has a bout 1/4 to 1/3 the overall power of the psp, for example the psp has a MIPS R4000 proccessor while the ps2 has a MIPS R5900 (as you migth guess the larger number indicates its a faster chip) also psp has 2mb dedicated video memory ps2 has 4mb and has a much higher memory bandwidth...thers plenty of other diferneces, but its not suprising the psp is less powerfull its the smallest most well built portable games console ever. i forgot what my point is, oh yes your wrong psp does not = ps2

Now, whats the problem with that? Put yourself in his position, how would u feel if ur using ur free time to make something for the public and some assholes keep saying that ur work sucks? To all you idiots that are complaining about speed and compatibility: What right do you have to say anything against the guy thats going this for free. If i was the creator and saw your guys lack of appreciation, I'd figure you are were not worth my time. Being that most of you are 11-13 year old retarded kids, you obviously have forgotten the progress, (or weren't born yet) that took place from Ultra HLE, Nemu64, and all the way to Project 64. It takes time and doesn't magically work 60fps with 44khz from version 1.0 beta. Seriously people do you take the time to read what your writing sometimes?

guys this is quality even for those who don't like the 64 it's still an amazing feat. those that say its impossible thats not necessarily true its just impossible in the way you imagining doing it. he might be thinking of a completely different way. for those that say an emulator needs 10% more processor speed to play at full speed thats not neccessarily true either. for instance the emulator

Reply

# psprox 2007-05-05 19:45
that r11 was based on needed a proccessor that needed to be 10% more powerful but obviously after all the tweaks new code etc that will be maybe 5% after more tweak etc it will be more realistic dont forget the psp does have a more powerfull processor than the 64 so it can be done. it also doesnt need to produce hi quality graphics on a huge screen just a small one. look at the difference in file size on a normal picture that look

Reply

# psprox 2007-05-05 19:48
s great on a huge screen it fairly large but to put it on your psp you can greatly reduce the resolution and quality to look great on the psp still and it will have a much smaller file size. so all sorts of things like that give us hope as to full speed daedlus

The events of the past few days in eygpt bring to light how corrupt any and all current government bodies can be. And it really is a shame. We entrust these leaders with our trust that they will do what is right for the people that put them in the position of power and they abuse it, often times rather blatantly. I applaud the eyptian people for standing up for themselves. it is my hope that the people will be heard & that the current government will do the right thing (stepping down if need be). But I also hope that whatever leadership takes control will be one that truly will workon behalf of the eyptian people.
