Custom Firmware 5.00 M33-6 Released

Can't say I saw this one coming... Dark_AleX has released custom firmware 5.00 M33-6. This new version attempts to increase read access, hopefully reducing the lag in heavier titles when playing from the memory stick, and in general, speeding things up all around. See the comparison chart here. Changes in 5.00 M33-5:

A setting has been added to recovery, that, when enabled it may increase memory stick reading speed. (only on the psp, not in the pc). By default it is disabled. If you installed 3.71 fatmsmod, do not use this setting, as its performance with 3.71 driver has not been tested. Instead, reinstall 5.00 m33-4 using dc8 and update to 5.00 m33-5.

Changes in 5.00 M33-6:

Fixed a bug that made unbootable psp without memory stick or with a bad one.

I just downgraded from 5.02 GEN-A

So far I'm glad I did. GEN-A doesn't have much to lure me to it other then Category sorting, which I don't use much anyways. Need L/R swapping feature with it or something.

500m33-6 has drastic speed increase for 8gig memory cards on PSP phat. Wondering if that driver will actually make it speed up any...

that happened to me when u upgraded to 4.01 m33 a while ago
it's just an error that happens with with some updates
updating to this should fix it if not then i wouldnt know what to do

My experiment: CSO: Higurashi Daybreak; ISO Mode: M33 driver, Sony NP9660, Normal, OE isofs.
- Fat 5.00m33-4: fatmsmod371.prx and slim 5.00m33-6: without fatmsmod371.prx, speed up ms access enabled: Fat loads faster than 3 seconds.
- Fat 5.00m33-4: fatmsmod371.prx and slim 5.00m33-6: with fatmsmod371.prx, speed up ms access enabled: Slim loads faster than 1 second.
=> Fat with fatmsmod371.prx are winners.

Other thoughts: I see that slim with/without fatmsmod371.prx is always slower than fat. Anyone know why? This is not my feeling, I have a timer.

well with the 3.71 fatmsmod installed, psp cannot see music with chinese,korean, japanese titles. that is unless you dont need that ability...

but still i recommend this over fatsmod

I guess it just depends on the games. I'm pretty sure this update is faster than fatmsmod371.prx but then again it could be the other way around. It all boils down on what game (ISO, CSO). Hopefully some more benchmarks would come out. :)

download a music with some foreign language title adn add it to your psp, if it doesnt display the music with the foreign language title then you have it installed.

of course, theres always recovery flasher

What I did was renamed a MP3 file to Wür.MP3 and put it on my PSP. The PSP showed Wür.MP3 and played it. Is it a safe bet that I did not download the 3.71 fatmsmod driver?

Guys and gals, the only reason he's saying not to use 3.71 fatmsmod is because it's untested. At least one person on here claims it works -- the question is that of reliability. If you want to try it, go for it -- back up your MS first, and don't cry if you lose savegames, or it ends up needing a reformat!

I installed this and noticed that
once in a while while using internet
explorer and trying to save a bookmark,
the PSP freezes. Then it shuts off.

I had installed the 3.71 driver before,
I don't know if that might be the cause.

Other than that with the 3.71 driver pre-installed before hand, everything else seems to work fine, even after enabling the MS feature in the settings.

try a Chinese music, but if you dont remember installing fatmsmod then its safe to assume you dont have it in.

but you can always use recovery flasher to reinstall 5.00m33 first just to be safe :)

HELP!! I have applied this update and now when I load any ISO my character keeps moving down. I dont think its the anolog stick. I can move any direction when i move the stick but when i let go its like if i was pressing down. Any advice?

I had taken a super long break from my psp.. since 3.52m33 .. and i just got back up to date.. and installed all the way through this 5.00m33-6. But for some reason my iso's don't seem to even show up on my psp anymore. I put them in the iso folder and can't see them when i try to play. Do i need to install something else aside from this CF? I never installed the 1.5 kernel.. i thought that was just for homebrew... am i wrong?

I can confirm that the 3.71 fatmsmod works better than no 3.71 fatmsmod. Even with .iso files.

1.5 kernel must install only thous who have phat psp (only if you want to run homebrew gameson it).. try to format your ms..or i dont know try to enter restore mode and seek problem there..

It won't brick. At least not on an old PSP Fat. Tested and works, but the issue with the Internet Explorer bookmark file opening from card
remains (PSP Stops reading file from the card, freezes and shuts off every once in a while, happens every now and then, not always though) didn't happened before installing this update.

Very cool man! After installing the 5.00 M33-6, and then enabling the memory reading speed setting, I get as much as twice the original loading speeds!

This is especially obvious when playing DJ Max! And I'm using a 8GB memory stick! Think this is the best update so far! Great job to Dark_AleX!

So I haven't used my psp in a looong time I actually have 3.40-OE on it and I decided to upgrade finally. I got the official 5.00 update and the new 5.00 M33-6 updater and put it all on a new formatted card and all it says is "unpacking.... done."

i did it already, had 5.00 m33 - 4 with fatmsmod and put the m33 - 6 and it's going faster noticeable. and no issues at all at this moment. i'm using fake 4 gb memory stick, and my friend did the same with fake memory 16 gb and no issues at all for him also.

It means you need to download the sony official 5.00 firmware in order to complete the installation. all you downloaded was the M33-6 Patch for the Official Firmware (OFW). You can either download it straigt at the Sony website, or use your PSP to download it for you using network update (BE SURE YOU HAVE M33 NETWORK UPDATE SELECTED IN YOUR CONFIGURATION FIRST!)

I downloaded the M33-6 firmware right away with network update (which in my opinion is one of the coolest things they did with m33 firmware, now i dont even have to chase the updates down, I just network update on the PSP itself, that is worth its weight in GOLD!) Anyways, I think the speed boost is great, especially if you are using larger size cards (8-16 gig). I dont think there is any negitive effects, such as battery depletion, or anything.

How can the file be 467KB, because when i put it in my psp just like the read me file says , and got into games and pres X on the update , it says "the game cannot be started/the data is corrupted",the game is actually the custom firmware, and yes my PSP is the 2000version and it has the 5,03 official firmware

ok i have updated the cfw to number 6,but still there is a baterry charging problem with this firmware,and more and more people installing cfw 5.00m33 are getting psp's that dont charge.All is well just the battery dontcharge no more and in the xmb in battery system it shows external only.The previous firmware i had from da worked perfect and the battery charged.Now 2 days after installing 5.00cfw the battery wont charge.I think there is a bug somewhere in the system.DA please have a look into this.great work and i have been with you from 2005,the downgrDER Dayz

dude my psp was like at 3.7 custom firmware. so i updated it to this. when i turn my psp on it freezes on the home screen. all it shows is the background and the battery icon. then it shuts off after like 10 secounds... i need help big time!!!

If you have an official Sony firmware 5.03 (or below than can be updated to 5.03) you can use ChickHEN, then use hellcat's cfw flasher to just get custom firmware without a pandora. With any official firmware greater than 5.03 you would need a pandora battery and magic memory stick.

I noticed a lag in a cso file. I turned my psp off and held down the top right trigger button when I switched the psp on again to enter the recovery menu. I used the options to change the XMB and ISO/UMD speed to 333, I also changed the MS option to always. Then I exited recovery mode and tried the game again, it was better.

I know this post is a few months old but just to clarify for people still stuck here. I had to update from 3.40-OE to 3.52 M33-2 first and then I went on to the 5.00 M33-6 installation following the steps.

when i start internet browser it works fine but when i swittch it off on da internet browser screen an turn it on again it freezes when i disable cxmb it works fine but i cant use custom themes.. any fix or solution ??

well, ANGELO.. your psp is not broken, first thing you do, turn off your psp(fully) and then turn it ON again while pressing R-button.. if done, go to configuration and "UMD MODE" and Press X and when your done, press back, and exit... and you can now play all yuor games wthout UMD REQUIRED
