A Remake Of Gratuitous Levels Of Awesome

Submitted by HolmesInFive; May 14, 2012

Pull out your PSP with your GBA emulator homebrew installed (or even on your PS3 if you have it too)!  This is one ROM that you do not want to pass up the opportunity of playing.

Back in 2007, @LinkAndZelda137 and @Z3IKKU (a previous -Hacks writer) began developing a complete remake of the game Pokemon Crystal from the Gameboy Colour using the "shell" of Pokemon Fire Red's graphics on the Gameboy Advance.  After a long 5 years, in 2012 we can finally get our callused thumbs on one of the most flawless and incredibly well done pieces of "universal homebrew" (play it on your PC, PSP, PS3 whatever you want) that can be seen in a Pokemon remake.

I won't go into full detail about the game and what these dedicated developers have packed in, but you can most definitely read up on it all on the game website and what the vast expanses of this amazing Crystal Version re-do have to offer.

The game is also available for download on the site linked above, and you can read through the more recent development journal as more work is put into such an outstanding ROM.  Many popular YouTubers have actually picked up the game doing Let's Play's of the game in speed runs, and even full playthrough's of the old beta's.

So download the game from the link above, get that emulator running and begin your pixelated journey through Liquid Crystal.  You won't be disappointed.

Despite this being really a very impressive accomplishment, is there any reason I should play this instead of Pokemon Black for the DS? Is it an improvement over that in any way? I'm new to the Pokemon franchise.

The "required emulator" download isn't compatible with PSP, and the ROM isn't compatible with my emulator. What do I do?

appriciate the rom for what it is. Some guy took years out of his life to turn a Pokemon Fire Red hack into a GBA fan made version of Crystal with bonus content. It's amazing that it's finally finished.

The .ips file provided by the source is a patch and not the actual ROM already patched. A patcher, named LunarIPS, is required to patch this .ips file on an untouched ROM of Pokemon Fire Red. In the end, we'll get Pokemon Fire Red ROM (.gba) but patched to become Pokemon Liquid Crystal.

I haven't tried the actual game itself as the ROM that I've used didn't work as it's already patched. This patch requires an untouched ROM of Pokemon Fire Red. To anyone who has an untouched version of Pokemon Fire Red, feel free to share it with us! =3

If you can get this game patched into a single ROM then yes, it will work on your PSP/PS3.

An untouched Fire Red ROM would only be a google away!

If you patch the ROM it should run on your PSP, otherwise you may have to unfortunately keep it to a PC emulator.

If that is the case then I sincerely apologise for the misinformation!

In other words, you're ignoring my question by rephrasing what I already said.

Yes. Yes there is. The 2nd generation of Pokemon games are absolute classics, not just from a technical standpoint. The pokemon that are featured are actually memorable, the worlds are HUUGE (not even considering the extra content), and you can actually play online! (don't tell me you can do that on a DS other than a DSi, unless you want to be using a hugely insecure WEP network)

More traditional graphics, for one.  And it's Crystal as opposed to Gold/Silver.

first, you want to get the Pokemon FireRed Version gba rom and make sure the rom is unmodified.

second, go to the developer's download page: http://linkandzelda.com/liquidcrystal/download/ and download the ips file.

third, get Lunar IPS patcher from here: www.zophar.net/download_file/14069.

then open it and apply the ips patch to the rom file.

copy the new rom file to the roms folder on your memory stick; make sure you have gba bios, if not you must aquire it.

finally, you are set to go!
