Daedalus R14 -- Updated N64 Emulator Progress

At last -- worthwhile news! StrmnNrmn sharing his latest progress report on the seemingly controversial Nintendo 64 Emulator, known as Daedalus. StrmnNrmn goes on to detail R14's audio upsampling code, which is now working on the PSP's Media Engine (ME). Another feature will be the new UI font rendering using BenHur's recently released intraFont library. Check out the example below.

I fully understand everyones comments on this, doing it in his own time, putting up with shit, and ofcouse, $%^& its a great app.

Though, all programs need work, updates ect, a font change would be one of the last things i would do. (now start saying "make one ya self") 14 updates, with no big improvement to emulation, only adding stuff, which later on will make the program better "savestates", ofcourse ppl are going to cry.

StrmnNrmn, wait till its GOD, then release it.

constructive criticism.....I agree w/ some of u...dont release new versions unless some real progress is made. Savestates or Font?? no no....that should b the last thing...First get a rom working, then work on savesates. Cuz they're no good if no games are gonnna work. Would be enuff w/ just an 'update' on how this app is doing. Dont realease practically the same version w/ just a different #. I'll put down the ps3 when the day comes that ANY of the TUROK games becomes playable....heck or even boot up to the title screen or hear some choppy sound(s). Keep it up.

i dont beleve in porting an exsisting emu that will only run on a highend pc,what kind of frame rate do you expect and on top of that you cant really optimize said emu to the extent we all want ,so yeh it can be cleaned up and some more games may become playable with memory handling but its not the real deal ,this is the reason theres no main improvments between releases.

when the psp me media engine is used we will prolly see a nice speed up but now that StrmnNrmn has done so much with deadalus
i think it would be a top idea for him to start over and create an n64 emu for psp that is writen for psp ,he must have a very good understanding of both psp and n64 now.

StrmnNrmn would get all my respect , time and donation for a hardcoded psp n64 emu.

He is Now working on the Sound side of things if you just read his BLOG on his web site, on the HLE Code on the ME Audio Chip built into our PSP's, in doing that, its taking some of the Burden off of the CPU itself, and so in theory this should make the emulator abit Faster.
The Save States were made because it makes the Problem Solving alot quicker to pinpoint the Bugs, instead of having to re-start at the beginning of a Game each time, he can Load a Save Point and find out why the Game Crashes or the graphics go wrong at that point, see now why he made that, when he did........Hope that clears things up slightly, for all the Noobs out there..........:o)

Configure the buttons in Project64, and use the PSP as a joypad. lol

Majoras mask- lol Playable with the other things like dramatic off.
Super smash- Very playable framskip 2

PJ 64 IN NO WAY needs a high end PC to run. I use a 6 year old laptop with a pentium 3 and 256 GB ram, so you must be using QUITE an old computer if you have trouble running it.

As the guy RIGHT ABOVE YOU SAID, Mario 64, Mario Kart, and SSB all run full speed with 2 frame skips, sounds like a "few" games to me. By working on the ME you wont have sound problems. You can make it run where even if the game goes slow, it can still run the sounds at a normal non skipping speed.

I don't understand why people are complaining. N64 emulation shouldn't have been attempted in the first place. But at least StrmnNrmn proved that it is somewhat possible.

The whole point of homebrew is to show what the PSP is capable of. Maybe one day it would be full speed (by looking at mario64 its getting pretty close), but chances are it would never happen considering how limited the PSP's hardware is.

So, no matter how little a speed increase Daedalus gets, its good progress.

Okay, guys. It's come from running Mario 64 at like 2 fps, without textures, to it almost being perfect... Or at least close to fullspeed. So I mean, honestly, this has come AMAZINGLY far, and it pisses me off honestly, to see that people are still so unappreciative of all of his hard work.

there is one thing you stupid pricks need to realize about this emulator: the PSP can only run up to 333mhz. Emulating a console, persay, requires around 10 times the original CPU power of the console itself. The N64 was 94mhz. Do the math, 94 * 10 = 940mhz. does the psp run at such clock speed? no. Do you realize how much optimization has been made to make the PSP even LOAD these games? apparently not if all you can do is complain. shut up.

I think this project is great. Sure theres a ton of games that dont run right now and maybe there never will be. but even if he finishes this emulator with just a couple games that we all like to play that run smoothly then heck it was all worth it. This should just show everyone that as time goes on theres going to be more technolagy out there and one day soon well have some guy trying to emulate the 64 on are cell phones. It is coded for PSP - it's practically rewritten. The only emulator he ported was his own, and I guarantee that barely any code exists from the X76 version.

Either way, I disagree with you. I don't think it sucks. But it is far from perfect on most games, but StrmnNrmn has made INCREDIBLE progress, and I truly believe he'll obtain perfection. Or at least get close enough that a 1-2 frameskip with sound will be perfect. A while back let's see... I think it's great that someone has such an interesting hobby. And some people would love to follow the progress. I for one. Well. I would like a little more info. Like "xyz game now runs at q% of actual speed". This way I can determine if it's something I would like to try ... vs ... read about. This is the kind of story that cries out for a real article ... Not just a half of a quater of a paragraph indicating that it's been released. I think much of the frustration is that some people don't want to go through the bother of doing their own bench marks. Hey ... some people would love to be a test group for the sake of being a test group. That's awesome! It's just that not all of us do. All we want is a quantitative representation of what the work represents before we go through the trouble of dl'ing / installing.

The problem people dont see with trying to work a n64 emu on the psp has to do with how each system handles the files within programs differently
This is more difficult when noting that the programmer must create a code that links each of the original system's functions to that in the PSP's hardware, many many links which when done directly, may not be optimized; the programmer must then create shortcuts and simplify things to make the links more easily accessable and reducing processing time
Once those shortcuts are created, they might still interfere with each other (not always in obvious ways which cause bugs to be found later) and cause glitches and crashes
Some games are working great, others not so great, but Daedalus is a great program considering its not using the ME at all at this moment
Keep up the great work StrmnNrmn and give us a nice christmas present with R14!

mad shut the fuck up. this emulator hasnt gotten better since r9. the speed is fuckall on all the games. i used to admire strmnnrmn but after i noticed that the emulator speeds are all the same i started to believe that all he did was change the number of the version in the GUI, to make us retards think it is a new release. Nice update. I actually enjoy playing Mario 64 now since it runs almost perfect. See that? That's appreciation. If you can't wait for the damn thing to be released better (which would be amazing, not even something projected as POSSIBLE), then play something else and stop caring so much.

From what I know about the guy he had a pretty busy life with family and a job. Daedalus was just a hobby he did when he could find the time. He never had to release shit to anyone...but he did. If he didn't make regular releases like he did...he'd be getting flamed by people who want him to "hurry up and release the new fucking emulator" or "why is it taking you so long to release a new one." As for things like the icon contest he did...I think that was a way to relieve peoples anxiety and get them a little bit involved with the project. The updated fonts was probably something he added to keep himself from going crazy from constantly working on the project. Besides r14 never got released...meaning he didn't plan on releasing it with only a change of fonts. Furthermore, this was a fucking blog...he was only mentioning things he was working on, and whether it was relevant or not to the rest of us doesn't matter. This is his hobby and his emulator...he can do whatever he fucking wants. As much as I really would like to see new releases...I hope you guys made him never want to release anything again and he keeps the fullspeed finished project to himself. Good job assholes...the scene is crappier because of you.

If any of you can't say anything good, don't say anything at all. What if we say your own Emulator is terrible? Treat PS3 Emulator on the PC or whatever as this N64. We say it is terrible all because of what the problem is and even when you're updating it and so on we still say not to waste time on your Emulator. To me, N64 is kind of good, it needs to be fixed and updated, that's all. If it is running great and you want to play for free instead of buying a N64 which you don't even give a damn, don't play it. Just shut up and do something else. Don't waste your time posting useless insulting comments to the owner. And in case you're wondering, it is never easy to make emulators so once again, shut up and leave the owner alone.

Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart run almost perfectly. I've just been waiting for the next version to see if Ocarina of Time was going to run any better (I love that game!). Daedalus is sooo close. One or two more updates and it would be perfect!

For the life of me i can not work out why people come here just to complain and moan... If the emulator is really that sucky or you do not want to wait for it, then just forget about its existance. I personally am a great fan of this project. I do not play it at the moment as it is a bit slow for my likeing, but i agree with mikeyb123, another 6/8 months, this will be THE emulator to have on your psp. If people think it is taking too long, again as mikeyb123 said, it is free. Which makes it even better, but hey, I'm sure StrmnNrmn would work a bit faster if you were to donate ;)
