The world ain't ready for download-only

Submitted by greg; October 11, 2011

According to Sony, after their failed PSPgo experiment -- the world just isn't ready for download-only ... well, not the entire world, because me -- I'm ready. Of course I understand some of you aren't; per the big boss at SCE Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida:
Some PS Vita titles, like Uncharted: Golden Abyss, will be close to 4GB in size, which could be too large to download for consumers who do not have a fast broadband connection. Also, some consumers like shopping in retail stores, talking to knowledgeable store clerks, buying and playing games on the spot.
And I completely respect and agree with that. I like going to EB Games, sometimes ... especially when there are hotties behind the counter selling me my games. But other times I'd rather rot on my couch, in my unmentionables, and just download everything. I'm real lazy like that. Anyway... To further touch on Yoshida's comment concerning large downloads... If you don't know, most ISPs in Canada impose bandwidth caps, meaning you're only allotted "X" amount of gigs / month, and that's usually gauged by your price plan. You want more, then you pay more. And if you exceed your cap -- you're payin' way more. So I guess it's good to get out of the house sometimes. - source: cvg

High speed internet is usually unavailabl e in rural areas like where i am (Canada). High speed is considered 60 kbps and a 4 gig game would take me 4 - 7 days to download. Its good that it would not rely on downloaded games.

FFFFFUUUUUUUUUU UU.........   60kbps? really? Damn, I feel for you.  I thought I had it bad, I live in Australia, Melbourne best i could get up until 2008 was 1.5mbit then i moved, and got ADSL2 at 5.3mbit... now, (ive moved again) im getting 99.65mbit on a coax/fibre hybrid connection with 1TB downloads... we've come along way, though this isnt the case for everyone... 80% of AU is below 10mbit and only 2% of AU gets speeds greater than 75mbps

Rogers sucks.  Go with Teksavvy if your in the GTA area as the badwidth cap is 5x more and around $10's cheaper with often equal or faster download/upload speeds.  I agree with Greg though, sometimes its nice to go out and get some air from the man-cave, but then other times you just want to veg!

I would prefer downloading, my internet is super fast here (holland) and I could download those game in 15 min. This will take less time than driving to a shop, and you have it with you all the time, you can't forget it.

I think download only is not such a good thing either seeing as I've got a set limit of around 60gb a month which I could easily surpass in only a day if I tried but what if they came up with someway for the stores to have virtual copies that you pay for and then they take your system install the game on it and hand it back.

it's not the most reliable idea but it would help get the whole handheld console moving into the digital data era, how much better would it be to have everything you have on disc just stored on one easy to use Harddrive with a backup system incase one of the HD crashed, hell it would make find all my cluttered discs soo much easier thats for sure.

but I'm a dreamer in a world where ppl only want to make a buck

It's the prices that killed the PSPGO. They need more sales, like Steam does.

greg, I think it's awesome that you called it "EB Games" in your post.  They merged years ago with GameStop, but I still say EB Games, too.  Keep it oldschool.  Thanks for the awesome updates across the dashhacks board.

Gotta agree with that. I convinced my parents to switch from Bell DSL to teksavvy cable because they would get around 4x the speed with nearly 8x the bandwidth for about $17 less a month.

It probably depends on where he's from. In Canada, while the website is a Gamestop website, I have yet to see a store called "Gamestop". I've only seen EB GAmes so far.

Nothing beats a collection of your games right up on the shelf. And the ritual of choosing the game, taking the disc out of the case and loading into your console... No download shit will ever replace this.

Agreed with the idea earlier about 'physically' owning what you buy, specially when many people use the wireless broadband dongles, so when you look at $29 aud for a 2 gig limit or whatever, and if an average game is based at 4gigs or whatever, then payin an extra $58 for a game would suck, and then if you lose all your data and have to redownload...... i would be coming up with more swearwords than any dictionary
