OpenCMA For PS Vita

Submitted by Demonchild; January 01, 2012

Just shortly after the PS Vita was released, we've seen the first Hello World be horribly addressed by Sony with mandatory firmware updates. While forcing updates via Content Manager gives Sony a false sense of security, here's something that takes it all away. Zhilie has reworked some files of the Content Manager to completely bypass the firmware checks performed.

The installation is pretty straight forward:

1) Download the OpenCMA files below.
2) Extract the files to the installation directory of CMA.
3) Execute the 'ran.bat' file. (Run As Administrator if using Vista/Win 7)
4) Reopen the CMA. The checks should be disabled now.

Zhilie explains: (as translated)

psp2-updatelist.xml update files in disguise. If you really need to upgrade later, you can upgrade to temporarily rename this file before, but this update from the Internet. Or download the latest psp2-updatelist.xml to the CMA directory:

http://fjp01.psp2.update.playstation.net...telist.xml

After the restart CMA is not networked, or whether there will not force an update of the CMA strike.

Let's see how long this will hold and if it will still work for when the Vita is released in the other parts of the world.

Download: OpenCMA

It has NOT been addressed, as this article here states.

However this tool is extremely useful, and I am thankful for it. Screw this BS Sony crap.

Great job to the dev who wrote this program. It's got me thinking however, as i have not read any reviews of people trying to use the vita with a computer that "isn't" running microsoft windows yet.

I'm confused as to the deal with Sony trying to force users to connect their computer to the internet, so that you can only "copy" files if the firmware is upto date...

To me, it gives the impression that only Microsoft windows is "endorced", assuming they provide some crappy propietary driver on CD for the vita to work. Can you not just simply connect the vita by a usb cable and mount the device as removable storage? I would assume the memory card uses a standard FAT-32 filesystem... So why can we not "mount" the device as removable storage on any operating system that supports read/write of Fat-32 devices, and then simply copy our files over?

I'm curious about this, because i use GNU/Linux on the desktop. It would also be nice to know if this is the same for Mac OSX users?

Again, this seems like another form of vendor-lock-in bullcrap. I am going to assume only windows computers can "copy files to the vita", correct?

Any chance someone can clear up what Sony is trying to do? Because in no way am i installing a closed source piece of software with the intention of "phoning home", this is no different than spyware or any other backdoor software... even if they provided a GNU/Linux "driver".

Starting to change my whole mindset in buying one of these... it's looking really pathetic.

^^^ Ya especially since all the people at Sony would have to do to find out about this is to type "PS Vita mod" into google and this was the 2nd link. If we can find it, so can they. But obviously if someone came out with this hack this fast im sure after Sony patches it there will be something else to bypass it within a week.

I kinda feel bad for their losing battle, not so much Sony, but the game developers. The only reason why is because the less games we buy the less the companies invest into making games for the system. I think the actual system will sell plenty of units if only because we need the system to play the games and emulators. But the developers will get fed up when they only sell a couple hundred thousand games because everyone got them for free.  We'll be left with another portable machine left in the dust that only has a few good games and plays SNES and GBA.
