Mandatory PSVita Firmware Update Pisses Developers Off

Submitted by Zeikku; December 27, 2011

Sony is no stranger to dictatorship over consumer rights; and the latest instalment of its questionable security measures is for the PlayStation Vita. Its only natural for companies to protect the system from hackers and that isnt frowned upon by hackers, in-fact; most developers understand or at least expect this. The problem is more the fact that you cant transfer any files to your Vita unless this update is complete (this includes any media). Heres how the update works:
- Connect your Vita to PC via the cable. - Content Manager checks if the PC is connected to the internet. - If yes, the Vita connects to your PC and updates to the new firmware. - If not, the Vita does not connect to the PC.
In recent development, weve discovered that HBL runs on firmware 1.50 but was then blocked in this new 1.51 update; so if you get your system and connect it to your PC your dreams of having said Homebrew Loader are completely shattered. Head over to Wololos blog for more details. Source: [1337Mods]

what if the pc isn't connected to the internet?

what about an app that spoofs $ony's confirmation of what the current firmware is?

not that i'll buy one until full cfw hits it anyway...

Do they sell card reader adapter? if so then it shouldn't be a problem. or wait till a custom firmware fixes that problem

This is total crap. Regardless of where you stand on the hacking front. This CLEARLY has to violate some law somewhere about comsumers being able to use the product they buy. So if i have no internet access I cant use my handheld, ERRT wrong answer.

Sony just lost a buy from me. Im tired of this ****!

Well, its the same principle to new PC software. Most games you purchase now adays dont allow you to install unless you are connected to the net. My friend purchase the dvd version of Battle Field 3 and still had to be online and install origin. then it downloaded the game, so whats the point of having the dvd version? Even Star Craft 2 only allows you to play your copy for one month w/o net. Then you have to sign on to net and re confirm your very own account. So you cant point the finger at Sony for this.

So... All Wololo needs to do is find some sort of way to connect the Vita via Content Manager without being connected to the Internet.

Or just find another alternative way to transfer files to the Vita itself via a PC.

I'm sure Wololo & his friends will find a way.. they're quite a handful of skilled hackers. Very talented. :)

well, this is no different than itunes. I effing hate that program. I can see my interest in vita has been reduced to less than 10% now. sony really excels in making simple things more complicated. one of them is the ps3 data transfer utility. all my precious data from an old ylod ps3 gone just like that, coz u can't transfer it to a new ps3 unless the old one is fully functional. can't they just keep things easy and simple enough?? that really pisses me off, i'm sure not just me

wow really! by 10%? ! u must be  some kind of robot for you to know the level of your interest! by the way hacking a system, specially the psp or in any playsation product is the same as stealing!

I dont see a problem for using an Adapter for the MS. Usually most Netbooks or laptops have built-in SD & MS card readers. Moreover nobody will force users to download and install some stupid "Connect Manager's".
I must admit that this kind of protection is VERY irritating, but it's not something unavoidable. Just like one of the above posts said. Spoofing apps used for activating diffirent products already exist. I gues that could be easily adapted to fool this kind of firmware version test. Sony should try to protect their firmware in a user-friendly way ... Like fixing their own source code bugs instead of limiting the users freedom. It's more and more like "You bought out overpriced product, now you will use it as WE desire".

But I gues this is not only SONY's problem... More and more software developers try to make what I would call "user independent" software that "knows better what the user wants".

Guys if you read here the exploit is NOT ptached in version 1.510http://wololo.net/wagic/2011/12/27/hbl-running-on-the-ps-vita-sonic-says-hi/

Heres the part I mean

Update: one important clarification: this video shows HBL running on the latest firmware 1.510. The firmware update that happened today does not patch the exploit, unlike what some sites are saying.

You obviously don't own a apple product. iTunes will annoy you whenever you connect your iDevice by reminding you there is a new update but will not force you to update (The update reminder can even be disabled), make it mandatory to be connected online, and make it mandatory to be on the latest firmware to transfer files. I can confirm all 3. I have my iPhone 4 on 4.3.3 (5.0.1 is the latest but I haven't updated since I can't use my gevey sim on 5.0), I connect it while I'm offline when I take my laptop to school to get a quick charge, and can still transfer my music, pictures and apps I purchased. Sony has every right to require the latest firmware for their downloads and games to prevent piracy and force people who want to play the latest games to update but to make it mandatory to be online and up to date to transfer files is taking it to a whole new level. Really thinking about canceling my preorder over this.

And thus, the ignorance of Mac users is confirmed; I hate to break the bad news to you, but having a Mac Desktop, or Laptop doesn't mean its NOT a PC. The acronym PC stands for Personal Computer - your mac, being your own PERSONAL COMPUTER is INDEED a PC.

Stop reading into this so far, what the article means is: If you plug your Vita into a COMPUTER (in general, regardless of operating system it runs.) and it detects no internet connection to check for updates, your VITA will refuse to connect.

Seriously, you think Sony would be so dense as to rule out the entire market of hipster fags who use macbooks? That's turned into like 50% of the 18-24 year old male populous.
Pretty sure they have content manager for mac, and if they don't, and you aren't a retard, you can figure out how to get DARWINE to work and then your mac will run the windows version just fine.

##EDIT: Well, Wololo has proved the 'HBL' works on the new firmware so not even 1.51 is 'patched'.

I see an uprising of mad users that brick their PS vita on purpose during this obligatory update just to protest against it forcing SONY to flash their PS VITA on waranty terms over and over and over again until SONY will disable the obligatory update.

Hacking a system, especially psp or any playstation product is same as stealing? What the hell are you smoking? You've bought their product, they have your money. You have stolen NOTHING when you hack a system you've already bought. Stealing would imply that you have acquired something of monetary value without the exchange of said money for that item. Pirating a game, sure, is stealing but hacking a system is not.

You have a point, hacking a system is not stealing at all (such as installing CFW on a PSP or PS3). Installing cracked games without paying for them is. The previous poster probably doesn't know the difference.

If possible, a memory card reader could be able to "fix" this problem.

I just wish that they keep using Media Go. What is wrong with it? I use it all the time, not only to manage my PSP, but to play my MP4 files. For some reason on my PC any mp4 player besides Media Go stops in the middle of a video and freezes for a few seconds. Media Go is the only player that doesn't do that...and that's another reason that I like it.

Required update checks for game play/media transfer?

Say your on a road trip, or in a foreign country. But, you don't have wifi
in the car/foreign country. How do you play a game to pass the time? How do
you have a friend (who doesn't have internet) give you music? What about if
you have the 3G (internet anywhere), but a storm/distant towers temporarly keeps
the internet down?

Better yet, what if Anonymous (or any other group) attacks Sony's site rendering
the update page invalid. Does the WHOLE WORLD have to go a month unable to do anything
on the PS Vita? I wouldn't be surprised if Sony made the system check for updates
just to boot.

That isnt stealing either, its bad and wrong, but it isn't stealing. Stealing would be if you took a copy of the game from a store, but downloading a game illigally isnt stealing, as they dont loose anything. You may say that they dont get the money that you would of spent on it, but most of the time, you wouldnt of bought it anyway.

It wouldn't be ILLEGAL if it wasn't considered STEALING. Borrowing a game from a friend (that they payed for) is fine, as they lose access to the game while you have it. Downloading a game of the internet actually does hurt developers as much in the way of their extra (past standard-of-living) income comes from game sales. If they are owned by their publisher, the publisher will pay them dividends of profits in the form of bonuses (remember the IW fiasco?). Independent studios rely entirely on the sales of their games for profit to fund their next title. This isn't the first time I have heard this rationale and it’s wrong. The reason you don't end up buying it is because you get your enjoyment from the pirated copy. If you don't want to purchase a game, rent it don't pirate it. Also you don't actually own your system, you are licensing it from the company that made it (e.g. EULA or End User LICENSE Agreement) so modifying or hacking your system is also technically illegal and if the manufacturer discovers the modification they can technically take legal action against you (e.g. Sue you).

TL;DR: The definition of stealing is the acquiring of a product without the exchange of currency or objects of equivalent value, or the acquisition of an object that belongs to someone else. Downloading a game of the internet illegally fits that description so it is stealing.
