Blabberbot V2 Released: PSP Text to Speech *Updated*

Submitted by greg; November 23, 2008

Update: Blabberbot's initial release may have been a bit premature; in light of that, Art has shared Blabberbot V2 --
  • Attempted to fix crash on exit problem with late firmware PSP units, although untested because this isn't a problem with the test unit.
  • Backslash character is filtered from speech, but not from text.
  • Pause button implemented.
  • New Multi threaded operation makes buttons responsive at all times.
  • Program no longer splits words if the screen character buffer fills.
  • Program no longer splits single groups with periods such as email addresses.
  • Implemented Intrafont for text display.

What appears to be the first usable homebrew demonstration in Art's PSP text to speech effort is Blabberbot V1. Allow me to quote the Art man --
The Flite speech engine has a built in "file to speech" function, but I have taken an approach of breaking a file down into segments separated by return characters so that these segments can be printed to the screen, and so the user can also seek forward and back through the file while the speaking is in progress.
With that said; hold the left or right button on the d-pad to step backwards or forward, respectively. And remember the previously covered Garmin GPS Text to Speech Project, well; Blabberbot definitely paves the road for that. Download: Blabberbot V2 - source: qj

Indeed.
But it would be awesome if it was Speech2Text too.

Though that would be hella difficult to program...

not to mention that takes up a lot more resources :(. Not sure if the PSP's processor would be up to that.
