PlayStation Records Phenomenal Loss!

Submitted by UnashamedVandal; August 02, 2012

The war of consoles is a huge deal in the gaming world, so when PlayStation made a shocking loss recently, it has given rival consoles a huge boost.

The end of the first fiscal quarter ended on June 30th and it has only been recently that the statistics from this quarter have been published, and Sonys publication has showed some shocking signs. The PlayStation 3 as part of the Sony business has recorded a phenomenal 24.6 billion yen net loss; this is equal to £33.6 Million! This is an increased loss on the sales of the PlayStation 3 by 10.5 billion yen compared to the previous year.

It is expected that year-on-year sales will gradually decrease as more and more people already own the console and are patiently waiting for the next generation, however this extreme loss might be considered unacceptable in the eyes of many shareholders.

Sony spoke out about the situation and have suggested that the decrease in sales may be heavily due to the release of the PlayStation Vita, which they have assumed has taken away some attention from the PlayStation 3 and therefore decreased sales and as a result caused Sony to incur a larger loss than usual.

when they say loss, is this an actual loss in money out of sonys pocket or is it a loss in estimated sales they thought theyd gain from the console.

but these figures could be due to the wide economy debt everyone world wide is having financial difficulties, if sony are producing systems that people simply cant afford to buy then id assume that simlar would be happening to microsoft.

Microsoft always lived good with piracy. Everyone started to use M$ Windows and DOS illegally at home - noone even thought about buying this operating systems (DOS), or graphical shells (windows). Now Windows is the widest spread desktop-OS in the world (damn). Everyone learned how to use M$-products illegaly at home and played around with them and told everyone how usefull and easy to learn these products were. M$ earned good money also because of piracy.

Making a console too secure IMO is a big problem. You'll only catch the 20% nice guys that will start buying this much to expensice games (many of them (even "Blockbusters") are not even worth a cent). So the other 80% will buy a 360 or the other childish console. I have no Xbox but a collegue bought a 360 and sold his PS3 because of ... guess ... the possibility to use pirated stuff. He bought some Xbox-titles legally after testing pirated versions.

BTW: $0NY is too mean and has a very bad press too.

This is neither actual loss of money nor budgetary overestimation. Simply the expences for selling the product (in this case PS3) exeeding the income generated by the product, But there is a catch - this loss could be used to manupulate taxes payable by SONY!

Sony posts record losses within a week of the 3.6 keys being "leaked" by a brand new one-time poster. Keys for an older firmware that will allow the piracy of relatively older games that are well past their initial period of high sales. I feel like the leak was intentional to get the ps3 hacking scene interested in the ps3 again, creating word of mouth buzz to drum up sales. Am I looking too much into this? It isn't until I type it out and read it do I realize how dumb that sounds, but still...

uh oh. i guess sony better start tighteneing the leash it has around it's customer base and suing more people if they want to start making better profits. oh wait, maybe thats the problem.

33.6million is a drop in the ocean.   console manufacturers usually make a loss on the console, if they make a profit they consider it a bonus.       part of the decline in sales could be due to the rumours of the new ps3 super slim.
