DIY PS3 Controller

Submitted by tbag; July 04, 2012

Have you ever wanted to make your own PS3 controller? Well now its easier for you to do that.

If you are tired of the same old same old when it comes to your PS3 controller then this is going to make things a little more interesting. With this wonderful bit of hardware you can now make your own interface for a controller out of just about anything.  The hardest part of making your controller is going to be figuring out what works best for you. Have a look at the video below and you'll see what I mean.  Also have a read of the developers note.

Want to create your own radical controller for video games? Make the work easy with UnoJoy.
UnoJoy is a tool that lets you rapidly prototype native video game controllers for Windows, OSX, and Playstation 3. Using the popular Arduino Uno platform, UnoJoy takes care of the communication layer, allowing you to focus on novel interactivity, not USB drivers.

With the UnoJoy library, you can write your own programs to use whatever sensors youd like to map to controller buttons and joysticks. Then, with a single click, UnoJoy turns your Arduino Uno into a native USB video game controller with support for Playstation 3, Windows, and OSX, responding to your Arduino code. The process is completely reversible, so you can easily switch back and forth between having a regular Arduino and a custom video game controller.

It includes an easy debugging application that allows you to keep the Uno in Arduino mode but see the controller state so you can quickly test your controller without having to swap firmware.

Those calling this lame need a reality check. The knife controller my not be ideal and just a novelty, but this program could open up all kinds of custom controllers. Think CoD with a modified toy M16 controller. That's  just the first thing that popped to mind, I don't even like Cod.

I REALLY want one of these, imagine the CREATIVE possibilities!!

1. REAL TO LIFE steering wheels | None of the 'Jap crap' that we are lumbered into using because of compatibil ity...

2. GTA IV | We would need two thumbsticks, maybe one like a ps move thumbstick? and one with a gun/knife? The gun/knife would have a thumbstick (or possibly a motion sensor (like how CoD works on Wii)) on the back of it so you could aim and use the trigger to shoot...

3. LittleBIGPlanet | If possible, make it so that you could sqeeze a ball (or whatever) and you would grab. Using your other hand you would have a thumbstick to control movement.

I hope you can the potential of this, like I can...
