The PS4 Will Be A Massive Gen Jump. At Least That's What This Leak Says...

Submitted by Demonchild; May 26, 2012

PS4 rumors are all about and it does some good when they're either confirmed or denied. It's true that the next PlayStation is codenamed Orbis. That's just what this piece of paper says. But what other information does it reveal and is it true?

The importance of it is that it's tatted with Sony and PlayStation logos and seems to have leaked out from the hands of SCEE. (Just like everything else)

Here's the listing of all the specs on that sheet:

  • CPU – Cell Broadband Engine X @ 3.2GHz – 16PPEs – 128 SPEs
  • GPU – Custom Nvidia/SCEI quantum Leap @2GHz
  • Memory – 10GB XDR2 + 10GB GDDR6
  • Storage Capacity – 250GB/320GB Model depending
  • OS – Sony Aether
  • Video Resolution – 2160p 2D – 1080p 3D
  • Audio – 11.1
  • Media Formats – PS4 Game Disc – PS3 Game Disc – PS2 Game Disc – PS1 Game Disc – HD Blu Ray Disc – DVD – CD
  • Controller Input – Dualshock 4 – Dualshock 3 – PS Iris – PS Vita – PS Omni – PS Certified Xperia – Sony Tablet – PS Move – PS Eye – Sixaxis
  • Connectivity – USB 3.0 – HDMI 1.4 – Bluetooth 4.0 – WiFi b/g/n – DLNA – Ethernet – PS Vita – Memory Cards SD/MMC/etc

It's juicy info alright. If all of this is true, it'll be interesting enough to see that Sony is learning from their mistakes of removing the PS2 and card reader aspects of the PS3. The PS Omni and Iris are interesting entries as well, what could Sony have in store for the PS4?

You have literally no credibility whatsoever. Intel has managed to get only 80 x86 cores with Knights Ferry at 22nm. There's no way in frozen hell that Sony & TSMC which is still at 28nm and doesn't have a working 22nm node as of yet, will be capable of getting nearly 2x the amount of PPE/SPE combinations into the same die space; better than a company that's ahead of the industry by 2-3 years in less time than them.

Not to mention, JEDEC hasn't declared a successor to GDDR5, there's no such a thing as GDDR6. Great job.

If this were somehow true, then this would be the greatest thing on earth, remedying the fact that PS3s currently lack PS2 backwards compatibility. Those are insane features. PS1-PS4, USB 3.0, Hugh memory, etc.

10GB for both RAM & VRAM?

this sound promising

though I'm still skeptical on CELL cpu. Can't remember which data transfer rate that is slow.

I wouldn't trust this spec sheet... I mean really? 10GB of XDR2 RAM? There's no need to have that much system RAM. The only thing Sony lacks in their current generation console is Video Ram. The CELL Processor "rumoured" back into a 'PS4' makes sense because the CELL can push high end gaming to this day as well as costs for production stay smaller as Sony and IBM already have the Cell line up pushing out CPU's for this years PS3 (40nm CPU). Keeping a Cell CPU means Sony can effectively keep backwards compatability as well as work on the PS2 Emulation Software. I don't think these are the real specs I think these are the specs someone WANTS Sony to have for next generation. I'm all for increasing Video Ram however. My two cents.

Sounds fake, we already know the PS4 will use AMD's A8-3850 APU and Radeon HD 7670

Hard to believe they went to Nvidia when news all around posted AMD has all 3 Consoles in the books as far as I recall.

This may be a pilot specs for PS4 before switching to AMD Fusion one

This thing should have Sega Genesis support and support for every catridge based system that ever existed.

In all seriousness no, I don't believe this spec sheet one bit. Sony is on the verge of bankruptcy and the last thing they need to do now is pull off an "Apple" move. Another thing to consider is how the PS2 is still on sale, and how they never added PS2 emulation on the PS3. Sony would never pack the thing with 20GB of total ram, as cheap as it may be. Consider how the PS3 came with only 256MB of system memory and 256MB of GDDR3. 256MB was pretty low even for 2005.

Power consumption of this thing is also impractical for a home console. Remember when everyone complained how power hungry the Xbox 360 and PS3 were at launch when they only consumed about 200 watts? A single GTX 680 consumes about that much and it is considered one of the most energy efficient GPU's ever.

And most of all Sony is just cheap with their customers now. It would be nice to expect them to put out their AMD trinity + HD 7670.

I don't know if Intel is ahead of IBM by 2-3 years? I'm not much of a business analyst myself nor do I have credible sources to tell me other wise but I thought that particular point you mentioned sounded funny :P do you work for both IBM AND Intel? Interesting... ;o

Considering it took about 9 years for developers to come close to fully utilizing the PS2, I doubt it will be as powerfuly as they claim.  It would be nice for Sony to come to their senses and give us back full compatiblility for all Playstation games from PS1 to PS4.  How about this, have a USB UMD drive addon so we also play PSP games on the big screen.  All current handheld consoles give me hand cramps when played for more than 10 minutes as I have large hands.  I have a bunch of PS2 games I can't play anymore since my PS3 can't play PS2 games and I can't find my either of my PS2s.  Considerin g that Nintendo is removing GameCube support from the Wii U, It's doubtful that sony would ever allow PS2 games to be played on the PS4.  Being able to play games of the past is one of things I consider when buying a console.  I still play plenty of my GameCube games from time to times.  If these next gen consoles are as powerful as people claim, there should be no reason not add compatibility for previous generations.  Until they release the Ratchet and Clank Collection, I still enjoy playing those games.  I do agree that the PS3 had two major drawbacks, removal of PS2 compatibility and a lacking video card.  The PS3's GPU is based on really old technology, even in 2006, when it cam out.  I do find it funny that all 3 current gen consoles use CPUs from IBM.  Let's just hope that Sony has learned from its mistakes by removing features that people want.  Otherwise they will go bankrupt and disapear.

Before launching the PS3 they said that it will be powerfull enough to simultaneously run two 1080p games at once; It can barely run one.

Considering that the cell processor was a joint venture between Sony, IBM, and Toshiba? Hell, I was in the clean rooms in NY when the first Cell processor was made at an IBM facility... So yes, These specs could very well be true. IBM could be keeping it under wraps as to how far they can push the dimentions. It's not a trade secret that everything that the public knows about is already old news by the time it hits the papers. They are, in reality, about a year or two ahead of what we currently know.

This setup for a pc cost easily over a $1000, now. If PS3 is expected out in the fall of 2012, I am expecting a sky high price tag.

Why even post junk like this - it's obviously fake at least 25% of those features are unlikely to exist or be put into the PS4

unbilevable device, do you know how much the PC has this specifications ???

that mean the PS4 will be above 2000$ at the first appearance.

I wish will have this specification but with a good price.

the processor is over the top, the ram is not even needed. The Vram is currently not available... And whoever said that the ps3 can barely run 1 game at 1080p.  It's not that the ps3 isn't capable, it's just that developers still have not scratched the surface of it's true potential.  Developers are still dumping data into the wrong areas bottle necking themselves.  Thats where the issue is with the current hardware.  Unless sony is planning to run this thing as a game console, a pc, and a media center outta the box, while doing all simultaniously.. These specs are overkill.. The price tag would be insane yes, and they would not need to put out another console for what 10-20 years while the other companies either die out, or catch up.  Not to mention, in any actual press from sony, they have either said that their next gen console is not currently a focus, or they are just throwing ideals around about the possability of a new console.  But they have nothing set in stone, and have not planned on releasing one in the near future.
