I'm sure by now most of us are used to the constant rumors and speculation that you find on a lot of websites. You know, the one about the PS3 and if some one will make a new custom firmware or if the next gen system will play PS3 games. So lets take a look at the latest rumor floating around the PS3 scene shall we.
Recently a Dutch site posted info on a project involving Blu-Ray drive emulation and stated that the PCB had been cracked leaving the console vulnerable to development for a mod to allow you to play backed up games from an external HDD.
I'm not sure if this is the real deal or not, but if it is its going to throw the door wide open. This could lead to the end of the dongle wars or at least TrueBlue, and I dont think alot of people are going to mind if that happens. But this could also be a bad thing as well due to piracy (which no one can say doesn't hurt the game scene/industry as a whole) will go full blown as the hack should be available for everyone and not just CFW users. Again this is just rumor at this point and should be treated as such. So until its out and confirmed sit tight and hope for the best.
Official quote from the Dutch
No hacking, no flashing, no modding .
Emulation is the future. A team is currently working on a new hack for the Playstation3.
The blueray player, Sonys PCB has been cracked and costs can thus be gekloont. The team probably Wasabi or Wiikey team is currently working on this for the board to connect to an external HDD. This can be downloaded games played as Wasabi360 and Xkey for the Xbox360.
A major retailer in China has also indicated that this year is released.

This would require hardmodding the blu-ray player would it not?

I don't know if it will be harmodded but apparently it was stated above that there will be no modding...at least they say so. hopefully

It probably simply plugs into the SATA port on the motherboard where the drive plugs in like the ODE's for the 360

Dont think so #1.
I think this means that the actual code on the original blu-ray games have been hacked, so your able to copy/burn exact copies that the playstation can't tell is a copy.
That way all games can be played on any console, without any modification to the console.
- It's only the pirate that needs to know how to make the games playable.

I guess not. I guess the only modifications will be held on the PCB board from the blu ray drive, somewhat connecting an external HDD to it

I imagine it'll be a drive replacement... While technically hardware modding, it's likely just going to be a simple drive replacement or maybe even simpler like the Hard drive loader for the wii which was just a connector cable between the drive and system.

Seeing as the PS3 is on the last stretch on its life cycle, I wouldn't mind at all. The next gen consoles are coming. Can't wait to see what's in it. New hack for the current gen consoles are always welcome.

theyve been talking about cracking the bluray drive and emulating it for years so nothing new there. im sure they said it was nearly ready when the first dongles started to appear.
i wonder if it would still require a bluray drive, this could be handy for ps3s with dead bluray drives.

Everyone knows that the PS2 can and has been hacked, but Sony really didn't care at the time because the PS2 was the #1 system outselling both the XBOX and the Gamecube, now the PS3 is struggling with the 360 and the Wii, So Sony is making up any excuse that would make them look right or in this case play the innocent victim, even through it was their fault to begin with for making dumb decisions (Ex: $600 PS3 launch, If that didn't happen, they wouldn't be struggling like that.
My point is Sony need to take responsibility for their own mistakes and stop blaming others.

Messed around with some dictionaries and translators, and this sounds better:
"Emulation is the future. A team is currently working on a new hack for the Playstation3. The blueray player, Sony's PCB has been cracked and can thus be cloned freely. The team, probably Wasabi or Wiikey team is currently working on this for a board to connect to an external HDD. Therefore you may be able to play downloaded games similar to the Wasabi360 and Xkey for the Xbox360.
A major retailer in China has also indicated that it will be released later this year."
Last time I provided a nicer translation, some douchebags copied it and tried to pass it off as their own work. Let's see if that happens again. Timestamp: [Apr. 28, 21:45:05 UTC]

Pretty clearly it's going to be either a PCB that replaces the current blu-ray PCD, and a device that plugs into the drive's mobo port. Either way, since it's emulating the blu-ray drive, the PS3 will see only a valid blu-ray drive with a valid game in it. The real question is how game choosing can be implemented (perhaps a special boot rom, but this requires the ability authored signed code that would run on a vanilla firmware like any other code, and I'm unsure if that's available yet).
Personally, I updated to 4.0+ long ago, but I would gladly pay $100 for a an easy, effect hack like this.

I hope this comes out. Now my question is does it matter what firmware are you on?

almost guarantee it doesnt happen, hope it does but bet this shit wont end up happening, jus a bunch of dorks starting rumours, we need psn, new games and everything, my ps3's stuck on 3.55 gathering dust coz the games are dead and theres no online and no filesonic

I think this is to be something like the utopia loader for the dreamcast console but that will work from the PS3 harddrive or External HDD

Sounds like the sort of thing C4E wopuld come up except he would probably flash the blu ray firmware, I guess since he is busy with X360 drives for LT 3.0, the diciples have decided to give it a try themselves, in the same way they did with the X360, it will probably work but full of bugs unfortunately.
I hope C4e gets on the PS3 case soon, I'm not touching any PS3's till he does, cause modding a PS3 is currently way too complex.

According to CFWProfphet:
"No Hacking and No CFW needed, emulation is the future ? Yea but just for pirating games. No benefit of homebrew or something like that. And by the way bootloader exploit is already in work same as now some dev's asked team ac1d to hold back the cex2dex tool. Anyway so we have more time to work on other things and the scene is finally again working together, even if it is underground and not in public but real good and great things will be coming this year. Till this bd emu chip is out it will be overpriced crap."
