PS4 Rumors Continue to Surface

Submitted by tbag; March 28, 2012

The rumor mill is going at full tilt today and we have some interesting news to share regarding the PS4.  With the sixth birthday of the PS3 coming up in November everyone is starting to ponder what the next gen of Sony console will be and what its going to have a the heart of it. A source has learned of some of the details about Sony's next gen console and whether these details are true or just speculation has yet to be seen so we'll just go ahead and treat them as rumors for now.

  • Codename/Working Name – Orbis
  • Release Date – Holiday Season 2013
  • CPU – AMD x64 CPU
  • GPU – AMD Southern Islands GPU
  • Orbis games will have a resolution up to 4096×2160.
  • It will be able to play 3D games in true 1080p.
  • It wont be able to play PS3 games.
  • Will lock new games to a PSN account as an anti-used games measure, thus killing off the possibility to buy pre-owned games.
  • Games will be on Blu Ray or downloaded straight from PSN/SEN or whatever they decide to call it by then.

As you can tell a lot of this is not good news.  Killing the ability for people to buy used games could force more companies like GameStop to go under like GAME is in the process of doing now.  And the lack of PS3 game support will definitely make make some people unhappy especially if they have a large collection of games. But lets not forget this is all just a rumor right now so until Sony go's on the record and confirms some of these details this is rumor and there is no need to panic.

Sony is getting more retarted than ever, no one like something so effin stricken up like the ps vitas memory card. I hate my schools rouls about having only having uniforms. They are killing there business little by little, I'm sure the ps4 is going to be 800$

I'm guessing theres going to be no online play for second hand games, I hope piracy rules on it.

I completely agree, I have a PS3 now, but I will never EVER buy another Sony product in my life. Needless to say, my next console will be the Xbox 720 (or whatever).

i've been a pretty loyal fan/customer of sony consoles since the original psx system, but the've really screwed up there public image this time around.  Being an IT nut i really enjoy the idea of using hardware for more than just what it was designed for, almost more than i enjoy playing video games.  As much as i dislike microsoft, I'm leaning in the direction of getting an xbox with the next gen of consoles(obviou sly not a launch system), and i've never owned any of there previouse or current gen consoles before.

I don't find lack of bc a prob. I never play last gen. games on a new system. Why would I get an HD tv and a blu ray player and be mad because I can't watch Betamax on it. Same thing with games for me. "Watch my PS3, with great graphics, render this 4 bit game!" What does bother me is locking games to a PSN account as they are trying on the Vita. With Gamestop it will not hurt the bottom line of devs. but the lost  revenue from rental companies that buy the games will. I only buy 5-6 new games a year the rest are rentals or used. I will not shell out $60 + for a game that may or may not be good, and most demos are not sufficient evaluation tools nor is the Playstation Plus "waste of money by the way", 1 hour demos; it takes that long to get past the intro story in most games now. I will however, buy an on-line pass if a game is worth it.

serisouly people do not understand the word "Rumor"

"an unverified account or explanation of events circulating from person to person and pertaining to an object, event, or issue in public concern"

this is likely like a game of chinese whipers, and thos tools that hate sony decide to add their little spin to it, lets also mention the fact this was also claimed to be happening on microsofts next system, neither company will confirm this as bulls1te because only idiots would believe this pile of sh1te.

I dont see the anti-used games thing happening, they would loose support from retailers all over the world, and think about it, how can you do that on a read  only media like blueray? some nintendo or microsoft fanboy probably made that up

did you seriously just define the word "rumor" for us? we know what a rumor is. we were just speculating on how this might affect sony if it were true. someone needs to take a big glass of "calm-the-fuck-down".

i had an idea the other day when reading this and another article about microsft. im starting to think microsoft might be changing their business model and not release another xbox. at least not an "xbox 720". if you think about it, video gaming technology hasnt really needed to advance as much as it historically has. the current consoles are still pretty well equiped to handle demanding games. more importantly, the emphasis on bigger, badder, games is not as strong. i would argue it has almost reached a saturation point, where having the most graphically intense, hardware demanding game, is as sought after as it once was. the xbox (360) has been around for a long time and i think microsoft wants to keep it around as long as possible. it makes more sense than releasing a new console every few years. they have a good, sustainable model that has proven to be fairly future-proof. i think they will end up keeping the 360 and maybe, releasing upgrades to hardware every so often, really just revision of the same model instead of starting over with a new console. it just makes more sense. they have a well established brand. why would they want to waste the money on r+d, to release a new console that really wont improve much on the existing system? they loose money on the consoles. especially in this economy people wont want to buy a newer console. by just maintaining their current system i think they would make more money, and it would actually be better for the consumer, than it would be to release an xbox 720.

i wouldnt put it past sony. remember these are the people that put root-kits on music cds because they didnt want people to copy music they bought to their computer. and it would be too difficult. just force the user to register the game online before it can be played and link the account with the unique identifier on the disc. that disc can only be used by that player. or maybe even to the console instead of the player account.

what you said is true for all the hardware except the media, I mean blueray is a really big media that can still survive, I see a lot of good titles with little amount of memory, peace walker is 1.5 gb and has a lot to offer, imagine a blueray, and some games have much more graphics than ps1 games using less memory, but dvds are making the 360 kinda tight when it comes to graphics - gameplay - load times, imo microsoft screwed up when they left hd-dvd aside, it failed, so what? thats better, you have a propietary media with good amount of memory and realy hard for people to copy - burn since it failed in the market. so a new xbox will soon be a need for devs, maybe microsft will go back to the idea of hd-dvd. but lets be realistic, microsoft and sony will release their system because of f*cking nintendo releasing the wii-u.

The PS2 was the only console to take backwards compatibility to the next level, offering better graphics. Fuck Sony, for everything they touch, they destroy, killing themselves in the process. If they would embrace homebrew and only keep anti-piracy measures in place, they would be better off and sell millions, but NOOOOOOO. That would make too much sense.

actually, launch model ps3s had support for homebrew through linux and had ps2 bc with upscaled graphics. the problem is nobody cared much for linux because of the popular belief that "linux is hard", bullshit.

What if I never conect it to the internet? what if I have no Internet? I just dont see it happening, too many things to do for them, I mean to do the anti-used games thing they would have to put some more messures like force you to be connected to play.

well, like i said, they could just lock it to the console for those that dont have internet. i also wouldnt put it past them to force you to go online to register before you can play.

i think it just means its going to be a 64bit AMD cpu and not the specific older x64 model you're thinking of.
