A few weeks ago the rumor mill was running at full tilt about the next gen of PlayStation and Xbox and what hardware they would have and such. But you know what, hardware is hardware. What really caught my attention was the rumor about the inability for the PS4 to play PS3 games or even used PS4 games. Now that sounds like a horrible idea so lets look at the facts and the history and see if any of this is even reasonable.
PlayStation has had a history of backwards compatibility from the days of PS2 running PSX games and then the PS3 came out and had the PS2 Emotion chip onboard to support PS2 games... for awhile. after the first gen of PS3 was out Sony decided to remove the Emotion chip in favor of software emulation to save cost. As time went on and not much improvement was made in the compatibility of PS2 games and the software emulation Sony altogether scrapped it leaving us with the slim non-PS2 functional PS3 we have today. So could Sony just not put in the ability to play PS3 games on the PS4? As much as I would like to say it wouldn't I have to say its possible Sony is expecting to take a hit this year and could be looking to cut costs aside from the 10,000 jobs they cut earlier this month.
Now the more interesting of these two rumors is will PS4 play used games? When I heard this I was instantly reminded of something but couldn't remember what, so I did some digging and found what I was looking for. Back in 2005 I had read an article about a strange patent that Sony had. This patent goes on to talk about in a very technical way about a disk technology that would prevent the use of used or pirated software. Now we know Sony never implemented it in the PS3 but could this just have been the start of a disk tech that will be in the PS4? If the rumors are true yes it could! Now lets think about why.
Game developers and publishers make money on the sale of their software right? Do they make anything on the sale of used games? Not so much. So why would a company that makes money on first hand sales of games want to stop you from playing second hand games? It's kind of obvious when you think about it isn't it? They stand to make more money.

Actually, by implementing the "used game blocking", they stand to make less money... a LOT less money. It's kinda like that episode of King of the Hill... where Khan gets the car wash. He thought halving the time water sprayed would double his money... is if 6 seconds of spray cost a quarter, then then cutting it down to 3 seconds for a quarter would net him 50 cents (double income), and somehow, whittling it to 1 second would net him a dollar and a half for the same six seconds. Mathematically sound, yes. Actually viable, nope. That's all Sony stands to do here... "We'll make our stuff more expensive, then we'll make more money!" Until you realize the customers can say no and leave it behind. It's called competition. Anyone noticed there's a lot of vitas and mem cards on shelves right now? Because it's overpriced. If the ONLY way to get games on the PS4 ends up being overpriced digital, where you can't wait for someone to buy it, then beat it or not like it so you can get it secondhand for half (or less) off, then there's a good chance it won't get bought at all. The amount of "new" games being sold won't alter at all... except drop sharply.

they could make more money but then gamestop and other game stores that sell used games could or not want to sell the game systems which contribute to them not making money.

yes, they make more money if people buy new games, but if people cant buy used games, they wont by the games or console at all, I still believe this is a rumor and sony is smarter than that. lets wait and see

They will probably just implement a used fee to make the game run e.g. $2.50 re-activates it. I think that all sports games and online FPS games will be moving towards a subscription based play.

Yip - take me for example.. i have every playstation console to date but should they go through with this crap, that would be me drawing the line and turning to the competition (whoever isn't planning on doing bullshit)

You guys make some good points people are less likely to buy a game in some instances if they cant get it used but never underestimate the power of marketing, if MW3 or BF3 had this kind of protection i still think the sales would be high, as high as they are now... probably not but still alot of copys would go out the door. The people who stand to loose the most on this kind of disk based paring is the retail stores like Gamestop and the troubled GAME stores who specialize in used games. also this could be a way of trying to move more digital like the PSPgo was strick download only again reducing production costs for publishers and developers, but in the end this is all just speculation and time will tell.

or they could charge companies like EB/Gamestop and Futureshop/Bestbuy that sell used games a niminal fee to include said code which would save the end user the trouble... but then that marks up the already rediculous prices of used games at these stores already... but it eliminates black market and kijiji type sales.

The thing is, ps3 Is a powerpc64 processor while the ps4 is rumored to be x86_64 baes which makes hardware emulation near implssible

PSP Go anyone? No used games. Sony is not smarter than this. And yes, you are right, it resulted in very few people buying the games or console.

That is a good thought but EA with the online pass at $10+$2+$55 that gamestop wants for used game =$67. More than the price of a new game; (this is also true now minus reactivation). And more likely Sony would Charge $5-$10 to reactivate if at all.

Do you have any outstanding proof of these unsubstantiated rumors? Take them as just that, RUMORS. Please, don't turn into a joke of a news site.

Look at it this way though. If a console breaks you'd have to buy all new games too. No one would want to have a system like that so I do believe that these rumors are just that, rumors.

i dont think u guys get it... unlike the ps2 or psx, ps3 is much more powerful system.....
if u take into account the rule of emulating somthing (the device has to be x10 times more powerful) this just wont work....
even otherwise, emulating it would be a pain in the ass to develope.....
so expect it.....

sounds like reselling consoles get the ass as well...........if you gotta buy all the fuckin games again

So... PC then?

Actually, This is possible. OSX Snow Leopard and older has Rosetta tech which emulates PPC on x86 (and provides a nice boost in speed in fact). Sony could build in a similar system.

Well, if they did include this type of protection, and it actually worked. Shouldn't they be able to sell games for less money? No competition from the used game market, and no piracy, they should be able to sell games for around $30 right?
I'm not saying that i expect game prices to drop below the $60 new that they are now, but honestly the price they are now is why i have so few games, if every game came out with a $30 pricetag i'd have a lot more of them.

But still if they go through this some game companies have already implemented a subscription cost to play online. If the next gen consoles come out and ALL gaming companies abide to the online subscription scheme, then I guess it's Hamachi and Xlink Kai's era (and other underground LAN connection services) because they use LAN party connections instead of the Official Servers.

"are these rumors based on fact?"
you're a true fucking retard!

No used games/anti piracy.
This is like telling people to buy a car that can't be refilled with fuel and finding it difficult to be sold to another person and then the original buyer can't afford to buy another car <_<
somewhere close to that would be the scenario of the hurting to their company
(something like that)

If this turns out to be true and they take away the freedom to buy used games, I will never ever buy any Sony product again, EVER!!!

the go could have been a test, to see customer reaction. the vita was not digital-only nor had any anti-used game technology.

The game industry in general doesn't get more money by that move. What would happen is that people would buy GTA, COD, Uncharted, FIFA and games like that and they would not spend that money on unknown "not that great" games. I spend around 500$ a year on games. When i can sell my old ones I spend that money on additional games. I will not start spending more by that move. I either play less or stay on ps3 for many many years.
This step would kill Sonys business, at least in game industry. I rather play on iPad 3 then.
And car dealers would love if everyone would by cars from them and not from second hand market. But lest face it, everyone who sells their old car will by new one. And most who buy second hand ones can't afford new ones. Same in the game industry.

i got the ps3 80gb. it plays EVERY emulator from before atari to the resent 64. then plays most ps1 ps2 and most ps3 games. it not playing all but i say it best system. if not for all the games i got over 30k games to mess round with. and now with the wii/ds in beta for ps3 that makes possibilites almost endles. atm ps3 can play every system but ones endorsed by microsoft.

I'll agree to this if they'll cut all the game prices in half.

I don't understand why more people are not using onlive? Lets face it, the hardware for playing games will alays be done by OnLive instead of us.......it is where I will be moving to next!

Theres no need to expeculate if sony is going or not prevent disk sharing or used disks sales. They wont provide a disk drive at all. The wind is blowing to a direction that no disk will be necessary. everything will be downloaded. with the speeds of internet connection available these days, anybody will be able to play with all information in the cloud. The game software will manage a cache for start anything. Next generation will probably have 2 disks, one with ssd tech for playing and fast load... a 64gb would be enough to hold many loading systems(game titles). and a second (and cheaper) hard disk with aprox 1tb just for caching app data (so you wont need to download every time you load. the system would purge less used files that your are entitled to use, but you are not using them for a long time.
So... its very probable that all content you will play will be provided from a new service like Steam on PC.
Lets say sony wants to give users right to ressell used or unwanted games... they could... with license transfer, like the one used by adobe. to transfer adobe software from an old computer to a new one you ned firs to deactivate de license. so activation will be open on adobe site until its used again from another computer.
That way you could dispose of old or played games
It could be by sending the redeem code to other person, or throug an exchange service provided by sony it self charging for a percentil, using a credit system that you could use to buy another titles buy more credits, but never taking out money from them.
You may consider this possible...
I consider it probable.

in 5-10 years discs will no longer exist, you will have to buy all you're games from psn and be logged into your account to play it. you watch, it will happen.

I will never understand why Sony keeps using outdated hardware when they could go for a cheap cloud server hosting and avoid any compatibility problem. They would also solve many security issues , we all know some hackers have a preference for Sony attacks...
