The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are consistently competing with each other, while Nintendo's Wii has quietly been rolling in the sales and taking an enormous lead over its competitors. In fact, the Wii gained a 23 million lead over its closest competitor (PS3).
Does this mean the family console is set to take 1st place? Nintendo has recently revealed the Wii Mini to the world, this was the companies last attempt at grasping sales from their consumers. Unfortunately for Nintendo, the Wii Mini has been somewhat of a flop so far, only selling 36,000 units. However with such a grand lead, The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have no hope of catching up before the next generation lands...or do they?
With sales figures between the PS3 and Xbox 360 so close, the battle for second place has taken a lot of focus away from the Nintendo Wii but what if that was to change? Back in the days of the PS2, Sony dropped the retail price of their system dramatically towards the end of its life cycle (2006), which helped gain a staggering 40 million extra sales. If they were to do this today, there is a strong possibility they would leap frog the Wii's sales. The same applies for the Xbox 360.
With the Wii Mini still being 'new' and a lot of focus already on Nintendo Wii U, the original system is unlikely to see another price drop, leaving plenty of time for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 to play catch up. Its a long shot, but it could happen.
Who do you think will come out as king of this generation? Let me know your thoughts.

I have a lot of PS2 games, that have not been used since since I had a 360 and PS3, never have I wished to play them on either console. I could just open my attic and get the PS2 If i wanted.

a console is not about how fast or how many you can sell, its about offering a system capable of lasting as long as possible.
nintendo fanboys can never see this, they can never accept that nintendo sucks when it comes to games, i dont care, nintendo can shove the we sell like sh1t off a stick up their ar5es.
end of the day, the wii us already dead and its sales is dropping like flies.... but hmmm ps3 and 360 are still going a steady pace and (unless they end support) will be capable of going for few more years.
look how only this year sony finaly pulled the plug on the ps2.
in my eyes getting as much use out of you money is the winner in my eyes, not be forced to buy a new system just because nintendo say so and ends support.

yes it's all about money, but selling a crapload of systems don't guarantee you money, if you think that way you really fail. Most of the time systems are sold at a loss, you can't make money with the if you loose money with it. The biggest benefits a console company has is with games, the more games you sell the better, and guess what? the ps3 was, and still is, the system with most benefits out of games due to the slow and late piracy scene, while the wii was hacked soon after launch and everyone took it to modding stores where they would install the chip for a fair price, so the sales of wii games plummeted and nintendo lost money with it
