The latest dev diary for Spec Ops: The Line goes into the game's realism and murky morality.
The majority of the video is Yager Develoment's Shawn Frison talking about the game's various aspects with some great gameplay video. He talks about how they used a military advisor to figure out simple things like what reloading a certain weapon looks like and how they had to take liberties with some of the military jargon so us civilians could understand it.
Another big thing in Spec Ops: The Line is the murky morality of the game, which is huge ode to Heart of Darkness, which was a big inspiration for the game. Basically, you start out in the game as a great group of clean gung ho guys, but by the end of the game you're dirty, grizzled malcontents just trying to survive.
Frison also says they took inspiration from movies like Black Hawk Down, Saving Private Ryan, and Generation Kill. Sounds like good company to me.
Of course, a huge part of the game is the crazy sandstorm and how the physics of it affect gameplay.
So far, Spec Ops: The Line is shaping up to be an atypical game, which is a good thing in my book.
It will be out this spring.
