With all the speculation surrounding Sony's Orbis project, it was only a matter of time until the gaming giants would be releasing something to the public, well that time is soon...
A recent video post on PlayStation's official website has invited fans to come and see the future. Despite only being released recently, a lot of speculation already surrounds the video and it is suggested that it is implying the company will be officially unveiling their plans for a new games console.
The date specified in the video is the 20th of February and according to reports, Sony has sent invites to the media and investors that coincide with this date. Just to support this speculation, The Wall Street Journal has reported that those familiar with the project have confirmed it will be the unveiling of the PlayStation 4. As for the Xbox, rumors have suggested that some information about their next console will be released before E3 but that is all.
Let me know your thoughts.

Actually Sony said that they are not going for any higher resolution than 1920 x 1080. Practically all of PS3 games are 720p so next gen is aiming for true 1080p. Think about it economically, since majority of consumers own a 1080p TV now that they are more cheaper on the market, Sony wouldn't invest their console on 4k resolution televisions because majority of their consumers do not own a 4k res. TV (cost anywhere between $15,000 - $30,000 or more!) and it won't be a standard for consumers for a very long time. So its very unlikely that the PS4 will be aimed for 4k resolutions, however that doesn't rule out that it won't support it. If anything it'll probably be an option for some games.

"Why go first, when your competitors can look at your specifications and come up with something better?"

Does this mean Sony won't announce until after MS announces, won't release specs until after MS, or that they won't release the console after MS?

That was a cruicial step at that time, because i wanted a decent media center aswell as a playstation.
And yes, i admit, i wanted retro emulators too..
When sony removed features from my ps3, without compensation or regard for my consumer rights, i realized i will not purchase a sony product again.
I have been very happy with my ps3 since it got liberated by geohot and co, but im not going thru with the agony before that liberation. never again.
Next console (if any) will be a open source one, like ouya or raspberry pi.
I can live with the lesser graphics as long as i get to actually own my own purchased hardware.
Plus, PS4 will probably have stuff like hardware-paired media, so you cant use second-hand games in your console.
I feel that sony are rushing out the new model, mostly because the "piracy problem is so huge".
I belive the exact opposite, that "piracy", in this case user generated content (apps´n stuff) and the capacity to execute it on your console, is a fundamental cornerstone in any modern gaming platform.
so i say: screw you sony, i wish you´ll get sued so often that your legal expenses kills you.
