SCEA CEO Discusses PS4 Used Games. Do You Agree?

Its been a while since we looked at the possibility of a PS4 without used games but now its time to breathe some new life into this topic. Is this a possibility or a deal breaker? Recently analyst Michael Pachter gave a little insight into what the big guy at SCEA CEO Jack Tretton thought about the possibility of blocking used games on the next iteration of the PlayStation.

According to Michael Pachter he asked the SCEA CEO out right what he thought of the possibility of blocking used games, Tretton responded "that used games are great for consumers and that it would be anti-consumer to take steps against the trade, But also stressed that his view is entirely personal and admitted that his overlords in Japan might think something different.

So what do we know from this… Nothing as usual, with the exception that we now know that at least the SCEA CEO thinks that it would be a bad idea to remove the ability to play used games. On the downside either no one is telling him what the plans are for the PS4, or he has no spine which speaks volumes about the leadership at SCEA. But Im not going to start blindly flaming anyone today so I suggest you make up your own minds. What do you think? Would you still buy a PS4 if you can't play used games?

I'm fairly certain the entire idea is a fairly bad idea in several different ways. I suppose the first reason it's a bad idea is that, frankly, used games are a huge market, and removing this market will probably remove customers of the console itself. The second reason is that it means, I'm sure, the hacking community will pretty quickly buttrape the protection, and Sony will not be better for it, since they're losing even MORE profit. They're best to keep avenues of profit open where possible.

people wouldn't buy any console system if they can't use second hand games because 99% of the peaple that play playstation and other systems games (ie xbox360/wii) buy/trade games to save cash.

some peaple haven't got te cash to splash out on every brand new title there is on the marketso if the game industry goes in this direction i think we will be seeing some downward spirels tat was sega some 10 years+ ago.

i would buy both playstation 4 and xbox 720 having similer rumors it is abit of a downer if you carnt play used games but the way i see it. its a ps4 its new if it carnt play used games get over it lol im asuming the games will be amazing and it maybe the return of older titles like time splitters for example. in order to buy a used game at some point someone would have had to buy the game new now we all might have to buy our games new but the downer on that will pass when your acually gaming.

I have always been into Sony from the ps1 onwards, if they bring out the PS4 without the capability of playing used games then I will definately not buy it, it is a farce, they will be playing straight into the hands of microsoft, I bet they are sat in their office hoping that Sony will do this, as they are behind on the launch and if Sony go ahead with their plan then microsoft can stop worrying about getting their console out first, because everyone will just wait and buy the 720 anyway. I really cant see this happening in reality surely Sony cant be that stupid !!!!!!!!!

Drop the price of all the games from 50-60 to 25-40 and yeah I think they can pull it off. Otherwise, Jack Tretton may nthe really have any power over the playstation but at least he can ruffle the feathers and maybe get Sony to do something based off of press pressure.

I'll do what always made sense if they remove the used games factor. Just pirate the games. It's what it encourages in the end anyways. Pirate older titles and that eventually leads to pirating newer titles.

If they do away with used games then all of the places like Gamestop would close up since a lot of their business comes from selling used systems and games. I used to be one of those people who would only buy brand new games until my house was broken into and I lost damn near every game I had bought with my own hard earned money. So now I am in the frame of mind that I would rather stick with my PS3 and build the best collection of games I can for that from used games rather than shelling out a shit ton of money for brand new games for the PS4. So if they actually go through with such a stupid idea then I will stick with my PS3. So instead of spending my money on a brand new PS4 game I will spend that extra money on other things like a few cases of beer. Sounds like a much better idea to me.

Something like this would be considered monopolization of a market and would get the item banned in the US. Their business practices are basically going to force other companies to shut their doors. Say Gamestop has 3000 stores across the US and each one, on average, has 7 employees. That's 21,000 people that would be suing sony or microsoft. There are laws in the US that are designed to stop companies doing things like this and forcing other people out of business. I just don't see $ony or Micro$oft trying this, it will just come back to bite them in the ass

just take a look a the psvita you cant gain trophies from a used vita game without that sneeky work around . and we know how sony likes to test the waters before they dive in head first .

I don't buy anymore. Is stupid spend money on consoles, if you can play on pc for free. But when i had my first console i didn't buy any originals games.

I don't think used games will go away. Personally if they did I wouldn't by one... at first. It would be just like PS3's backwards compatability. I put it off for 4 years but bought the console anyway. The problem is that if they take away used game its systemic. If you can't use the used games stores like GameStop die, or switch to the retro market. If you want to game you have no choice then. I'd start hunting bargin bins and picking up games on clearance but eventually you'd have no other option. We can bitch all we want but there's no meddling kids to stop them in their dastardly plot. I'm guessing though that PS4 won't take away used games they'll just rape it. You'll have to buy a new access pass for 10 bucks a pop from sony directly and all your saved games and such will be stored on playstation network so custom firmware and pirate copies won't work. But we'll all bend over and take it because we want to use the console we paid 500 bucks for... Oh and the switch over will come a year after the PS4 is released so we can't just not purchase the console.

Doesn't matter, all systems will eventually digitally distribute games. Thus killing any "used game" market. It's not a matter of "IF" but "WHEN". Think not, when's the last time you bought a CD ? Visited Barnes & Nobles ? Visited Blockbuster. Bandwidth gets better and companies look to cut overhead improving profit, it's just a matter of time !

I will be a little upset if there is no use of used games, but it won't stop me from owning the system. So long as the PS4 has great games for it, I will get it after one or two price drops.

Oh really ? Have you checked out xbox live ? They have a pretty big liabrary of "hard media" games for download. Just added this past week skyrim and saints row 3. Heard of "OnLive" ??? Like I said matter of time !!!

My current connection is 50 mbps. I downloaded Diablo 3, which is almost 9 Gb's in under 10 min. So what about bandwidth ??

I remember when the game was shipped and that was it. No fucking add ons, the disc had it all. I didnt have to pay another $65.

Lets not even get into the price of video games...so many gamers nowadays there is no way in frozen hell that the developers arent making enough.

badwith cost money, not only you, but Sony too. The only reason Microsoft is able to do this is because they have been selling Windows to people for the past 20 years, without their concern or knowledge. Oh and not everyone has such a bandwith, hell not everyone has internet for that matter.

about 6 month after the removal of otherOS (the only thing keeing hackers away), remember that hackers didnt hacked the PS3 because it was already capable of running homebrews.

how do u block a used game? that means that i can only play a game that i buy on 1 ps4?! and if i have 2 ps4? i have to buy 2 copies of the same game? ridiculous... inovate but in other stuff, not in blocking copies... that would reduce the number of gamers, reduce the number of ps4 sold, and therefore reduce the number of ps4 games sold and the number of SONY costumers. again, its RIDICULOUS!

everyone is talking about buying used games, but no one has mentioned how many times have most of us just gotten into some games due to buddies bringing them over to test out, or borrow. If they blocked used games, it would also block the ability to do this as well. So most people wouldn't even try a lot of games due to prices and being skeptical of what their initial interest in the game?
