Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) and George Hotz (Hotz) today announced the settlement of the lawsuit filed by SCEA against Hotz in federal court in San Francisco, California. The parties reached an agreement in principle on March 31, 2011. As part of the settlement, Hotz consented to a permanent injunction. Both parties expressed satisfaction that litigation had been quickly resolved. Sony is glad to put this litigation behind us, said Riley Russell, General Counsel for SCEA. Our motivation for bringing this litigation was to protect our intellectual property and our consumers. We believe this settlement and the permanent injunction achieve this goal. It was never my intention to cause any users trouble or to make piracy easier, said Hotz, Im happy to have the litigation behind me. Hotz was not involved in the recent attacks on Sonys internet services and websites. Now it's just Sony Vs. OtherOS'ers and Anonymous. - source: blog.us.playstation.com

"What if SCEA tries to settle?
Lets just say, I want the settlement terms to include OtherOS on all PS3s and an apology on the PlayStation blog for ever removing it. It'd be good PR for Sony too, lord knows they could use it. I'm also willing to accept a trade, a legit path to homebrew for knowledge of how to stop new firmwares from being decrypted."
- as people may have donated based on that, though I can't say I blame him for wanting this stupid lawsuit to end.

To be quite honest I just hope the scene sticks to making more brew than focusing on these stupid backup managers that have been nothing but trouble.

Again, it's not about me, I was on the verge of quitting this stuff last June, and I would hate to be the one who sets a reputation for hackers that all a company has to do is sue us and we back down. In fact, I want the opposite reputation set, that the more a company tries to abuse the legal system, the harder we rally back.
So much for that...............You just backed down.

MX:So you settled according to Sony. Did you live up to this?

geohot:@MX The terms of the settlement agreement are "confidential" and the matter requires that they be "confidential".
BricksLamp:What happened? PM, if you need to please.
I'm BRICK, I donated $500 towards your cause.
Please tell me all's well, and we're getting back our OtherOS?
geohot:I will address the donations in a forthcoming post, and I think people will be happy.

As for Sony, I'm sure they'll get what's coming to them. If Hotz wasn't able to win the fight, maybe someone else will.

I mean... The judge asked him to physically take back the key he had given out to other hackers... Really? And then her defense was that she wasn't very up to date with the technology and the case.
If that was the judge for my case, I would be getting out too! Ridiculous.

Firstly: Geohot stirred up a fervent fever of hate against Sony and their bully boy tactics. He told us that he would do this and that, would never bend over to the man and would fight for what is legally ours ie OtherO, to me it look like Mr Hotz has taken it right up the backside to further his own success maybe by pocketing a nice little earner from Sony in the process.
Secondly: For people that donated to the cause especially people like Brick who donated what is quite a considerable amount of money in this financial climate, I am sure they are feeling quite disgruntled by this news as they believed they had found someone with a bit of backbone to make a stand against the big corporations and fight our corner.
In all its a complete farce, people have been backing Mr Hotz to the hilt, when he has been doing shady lawyer deals behind our backs and yes I mean our backs as WE are the ones that help fund his supposed fight.
Rant over.... not yet
just reading through his plea for money again and what a crock of shit he has spun us.
Why should I care about your personal legal troubles?
You shouldn't. For example, if I was taken to court for sex crimes in Sweden, I would never ask for donations. But this case isn't about me. Clearly I am not being sued because of something I have that Sony wants, I am being sued in order to send a message that Sony is not to be messed with. But if I(and all codefendants likewise) actually win this, we have the power to send a much stronger message back. That consumers have rights, and we aren't afraid to stand up for them.
Why should I trust you? I just saw you trying to rap battle Sony
My attempts at humor aside, I do take this whole matter very seriously. I will be the first person in line on the launch date of the Xperia Play, and itching to get my hands on the Next GEOHOT Project.
Sell out...sell out
rant over now

Greg, tell me if you see what I see...
Have you figured out why this isn't over, and why I'm not upset at all? I did donate $500.00, after all... and I bought my PS3 with about 30% reasons leaning toward OtherOS (though it didn't have the power I had hoped it would)... don't I have more "right" to complain than most here?
Why don't I? Why aren't I disappointed?
(Think outside the box...)

"If you don't that means you don't own a computer or have the internet." What are you even talking about. Not everyone pirates. Quit kidding yourself, piracy is wrong no matter what asshole is doing it. Your not fighting some revolutionary cause by pirating. Your just a lowly thief that will eventually rob jobs of average working people not the CEO's. The "i don't give a shit" attitude is one of a true thief.

By settling out of court I think he is sending a very strong message that might makes right. I will reserve my judgment until I hear more, but I am not optimistic.

He in fact was the first who jailbreak the PS3, remember the infamous "Hello PS3, Im GeoHot"? Tes Math release some tools but the jig got discovered/leaked long time ago and NOBODY could do crap with it. Also some people here don't understand what a donation means, if you donate $1 for Hotz then you cant nag of what he do with that $1 because was a donation.
If you got your PS3 hacked because of this then be happy and keep playing (waiting for CFW 3.60) and if you upgrade all the way to 3.60 and bitch about it then is your fault, not any devs fault because nobody point a gun at you and force you update your PS3.

What happened with the bull, did some one grabbed it by its ballz? But hey, I don't blame him for trying to save his sorry az, I just find fun the fact that he spoke so many blah blah blah, and people actually believed him and had some hope, but when things got hard, he backed off and turn around...

For years I have followed you, all the way back to some of the original iDevice jailbreaks. And when I heard that you made a jailbreak for the ps3 I was more then excited, and at the first chance I had I installed it. I have been more then happy with your work for all these years. And even in those days when you fought Apple in the court, I was always checking the updates and always rooting for you. To this day, when you were in court battles with Sony, I was always checking here and your blog for updates just waiting for that headline to read, "Geohot wins court battle against Sony" to come across the top news. But now, that day will never come. I hate how much you assured us that you had everything under control, only to bail at the first chance you saw. Since the first day I saw you on the news explaining your iPhone unlock, I wanted to be just like you. I thought of you like a role model, A person that's willing to help others by setting new laws by fighting big corporations just like you previously did with Apple.. Actions speak louder then words, but with this entire ordeal, all you gave us was words. In results, I'm just down right disappointed.
But in the end, I still have hope in you Geohot. Your brilliant, and even though you made mistakes, you still have my respect.

Although1! $ony didn't drop the case, they arranged a settlement, which normally means that they both get a little something something. Maybe OtherOS returned? A development platform (although limited) for indie developers? Purely speculation...
Watch Groklaw or wikileaks over the coming week and I'm sure they'll have all the details.

No..? Didn't think so. People are too quick to judge. If you don't know him personally, you don't know what kind of pressure a trial like this puts you under. He had an excellent legal team, and I'm 99% sure that; $ony approached his legal team, with a settlement proposal, George's lawyers came to him and said, "honestly, it's our professional opinion that, this is going to continue for as long as this hypothetical piece of string. Even then it will end in a settlement a few years down the line". Which I think is entirely true.
No one chooses to be a Martyr, usually they are faced wit no alternative option than to die one. I don't blame him at all, this is probably the best outcome, realistically, that could of happened.
If you're bummed about feeling cheated by hotz, donate to graf. 1,000,000 euro's is a lot of 0's... AND HE IS STILL HACKING AWAY, RELEASING, AND WORKING FOR US!!
Reply
They can indeed remove you at any time for any reason. HOWEVER, you can sit outside doing the same thing.
He was also refering to the upcoming anonymous protests... Now, I know someone who actually works in a $ony store in London (oh, btw, they get a fair bit more than minimum wage, they're salespeople, not labourers...), and they are dreading the 16th. Nobody wants to work that shift, holidays are not permitted (unless booked largely in advance) and doctors notes are required if they are sick.
Things like that; fear, the calm before the storm, the unknown about what exactly is going to happen is the only way you can get to company's like $ony.
Dealing with hackers online is one thing, dishing out bans to a bunch of faceless numbers... But when there are a hundred people sitting, chanting, waving signs, all wearing masks outside your place of work, well, that's a little more difficult to deal with... And the police can't do ANYTHING about that so long as it remains peaceful and within protest laws. PEACEFUL PROTEST IS 100% LEGAL ON PUBLIC PROPERTY!!
Do some research, then speak.

Custom firmware leads to backup managers,
Backup managers leads to piracy,
Piracy leads to... the dark side!

You can't explain to the people who hold vast chunks of your company's shares (which in itself is a palendrome), that, this guy we were sueing is now on our payroll. Just can't happen.

Apple don't own music. They're not even a record label. They're a mediator that takes a tiny % of millions of sales. A portal, nothing more. It's people like EMI who lose out hard... Oh, and $ony ofc.

If you are not being honest, that is fine. no one is going to track you down. People just want to find reason to prove why they do and why it is right.
Pirating is never be right. If you are developer, programmer, you will understand that. If you are not, I hope you children will be that you will feel it at least.
Most people here are young, teenage to may be up to 30. You dont have money, it is ok. Please Dont try to find the reason to protect your pirating. Those have family, how can you have too much time for gaming. Gaming is not you priortized stuff in your life. I myself barely have enough time for gaming. If you have too much time for gaming, go to find better job and pay for the game. Or go to educate yourself better to find better job at least for your family sake. Those said games are too expensive, go to buy older second hand game. You don't need to play new game as soon as it come out. unless you are kid and compare your classmate and neighbors' kid. Although, Sony should charge game less than $50 for new one. same as Xbox. but Wii and 3DS game are more like rip off there.
Those whom donated to Hotz, those have good will or support what he was doing. But if you didn't donate, dont cry like baby. Even if you do, dont complain. Why dont you go to face Sony of any law sue? That is time and $ consuming. And very stressful situation for Hotz. The cost may be up to couple millions. the donation may not be enough for partion of it.
finally, whatever it is. If you want to reply or attack my words, I don't care. I meant. That is pointlessss. look into your heart to find what is wrong and right. I am tired of looking all of this and this is my first post.
