Just getting realistic lighting and shadows will go a long way to making things look a lot better. Better physics and objects/environments that break apart realistically takes a lot of processing power and memory as well.
Take a look at games that try and do a lot with their world, such as Skyrim, and you'll see that graphics and processing power need to improve quite a bit to make those types of games look and run better.

If nintendo would pull their head out of their asses and quit lagging behind the rest on the hardware side of things, and stick with traditional controlers, they wouldn't be destined to failure. They're only shooting themselves in the foot, and pissing of long-time fans like myself.

Well the only console I plan on getting this generation is by Nintendo, I am done with XBOX and PlayStation.

I rather have a reliable console. I don't much care for over-expensive paper weights. I have never had a problem with any of my Nintendo consoles, I have however had a problem with my PS3 and XBOX360. I am done with XBOX and PlayStation and the only console I am going to buy will be from Nintendo.

The Nintendo boss is just trying to make excuses why ALL recent and past Nintendo consoles had inferior graphics compared to the competition! Many ppl claim that graphics dont matter and that its the games that matter...thats just something a person says when they own one of said graphically inferior consoles!
Sure the PS4 and new Xbox wont be as big leap as PS1 to PS2 was, but it will be a leap none the less, and a reasonable one at that!
Nintendo consoles and handhelds have always been aimed more at younger players, its why the Wii was able to get away with cartoony graphics. Hardcore gamers that want the best possible graphics and adult oriented games will always choose a Playstation or Microsoft console, since they are often at the forfront graphics wise and in terms of adult games like GTA4 and the likes!
The next gen consoles will do very well, they always have and always will! Because sooo many ppl like myself around the world are dying to get our hands on the next best thing! Like when the PS Vita came out, i had been wanting one from a year before it was released....and I got my Vita on Aussie release day! And i have loved it ever since!
Nintendo boss is just trying to make out like graphics dont matter to true gamers, which is BS...they do matter! (Maybe not as much as good gameplay, but they do matter). The Nintendo boss knows that while the Wii U is graphicaly better than the Wii...it still wont be up there with the PS4 and the next Xbox.

Nintendo always spreads FUD like this before a launch of their inferior tech, even back when there were only Nintendo and Sega as the main players (anyone remember the 'Sega does what Nintendon't'?) If developers weren't expecting the same kind of leap from ps3 to 4, then why would the EARLIEST next-gen tech demos (UE4,SE's Agni tech demo) be so graphically demanding?

It's only natural that today programming won't be able to fully exploit the new hardware. That's a normal process in the console market. First generation games of ps2 didn't differ much from ps1, but after that we got GOW, Resident Evil 4, Shadow of the colossus. Its natural that developers need time to accustomize to the hardware. Iwata is just stating the obvious. What he doesn't say is that probably the games will be only in full HD resolution and not the big resolutions boasted in the leaked hardware news.

Although it is a dig at ps4 and xbox720, you can't deny that Mr Iwata is 100% correct.

This has been true for a long time now, and will only become more apparrent as hardware becomes more powerfull.

Nintendo has always been ahead of their time. Look at the Gamecube. Had a 3d prcocessing engine well BEFORE anybody else. Was not until the recent consoles did we see this introduced. They are also reliable AND durable. I still have a old gamecube that has been kicked around and beaten beyond belief but still works. How many classic nintendo consoles ever failed. Hell we had more problems with the cartridge then with the console. The constant blow in cartridge or wad up paper to hold the cartidge down. Still works today and the old thought of this still makes me smile today. I have been through 2 xbox and 1 ps3....technically 2 ps3 but repaired one. went through 2 ps2 and 2 ps1. That alone goes great legnths saying that my launch model will works flawlessly. As far as graphics yea i agree. Nintendo my not have that part cornered but at the same time i do not believe that they really care. They make the game FUN. Why are so many mario games still so damn epic. Its amazing really as they just recycle the same story but damn they are just FUN to play. Can ps3 or xbox do that? Kirby return to dreamland was just a blast to play even though graphicly did not blow you away. That is what nintendo does. Release something FUN DURABLE AND AHEAD OF ITS TIME. Why they are still in buisness. Why i look more forward to their release as opposed to the ps4 (which will WAY overpriced) and the xbox (will be priced just less than ps4). I want a epic fun to play game. All you bashers look at resident evil 4. Released for Gamecube had good graphics won game of the year...one of the most epic games ever created and spun off TONS of spinoffs. Even beat God of War which was graphiclly better BUT not as fun to play. This is what nintendo does. Not hype or overcharge but fun and epic.

I think he is 100% correct.
Nintendo is in a good position as 1080p is now in more homes with 4k and 8k screens are a few years away from becoming mainstream as 1080p standard. Apparently the WiiU is capable of 1080p...
Im sure the next PS and Xbox will look better then the WiiU.. but not bt much to the normal consumer... sort of like 360 to the PS3...
I think time and money will be a big concern also, budgets and development times will increase..
My concern with the WiiU in terms of processing power, it that you cant have more then 2 of the new controllers... if sony follows Nintendo's route with the tablet controller, then 4 maybe 8 would be possible...

LOL @ the gamecube being the first 3D console.... Nintendo was making 3d games for the SNES back in 1993, Starfox anyone? Not to mention the Nintendo 64, Sega CD and every other system out around that time. Also PC's were making them way before any of those (yes, computers are a gaming platform...)

Yea, but that kind of games that you're talking about could be done for a tablet or a smartphone in not much time, fun but without too much power required, also for power you could get a PC, but that implies the changes of hardware and a console could not be so efficient but you buy once and can enjoy games for 7 years, nintendo want to make a console for just 4 years, right, the wii has more time than 4 years, but thats because Nintendo doesn't want to develop his games for tablets or for a Playstation2

Well I don't think that video games are what they used to be. Games used to be made because people loved them, now people just make game for money giving you the same thing one after the other. Why do you think the hd classics are selling so well.
