Theres been a lot of bitching and moaning about the next generation of gaming, well its time to break it all down and see what we have left...
Nintendo CEO Iwata has been hitting out at the next generation of consoles recently, stating that they just wont make that graphical leap expected. It isnt only Mr Iwata though, many fans of their current console dont see the need for the next generation so soon, part of me agrees whilst another part doesnt
You see, while our current gaming systems might seem perfectly fine, you have to admit, a lot of the world is evolving around them whilst they lay dormant. PCs are heads and shoulders above the PlayStation 3 and 360, and although many will agree that the added interaction of consoles over PCs does make them better gaming devices, it doesnt make the games better themselves.
Weve all been to the movies; Ive seen the latest Spider-Man and I watched The Avengers...so we all know what kind of CG is available. Obviously this sort of detail and intricacy isnt ready for the interactive gaming world, but it is a very obvious indication as to what console developers should be aiming for right? I mean everyones heard the saying reach for the stars, so why not do just that?
Leaked screenshots and demonstrations have been seen and showcased over the last year, and it does the next generation of console justice (obviously not the Wii U as the graphics are similar to the current generation) but we want more than just graphical improvement. This is why I am making this point…
Dont you just hate how generic a lot of AI has become in games? You see the same faces in crowds of people over and over and characters who arent directly involved with what is happening in front of your player, generally dont get involved and seem unaware that you are pointing a rifle at their face.
This is something that needs to be tackled, graphics are great and CG always looks good when the effort has been put in, it doesnt make or break a game though. The Final Fantasy XIII series was hugely criticised and lacked a lot of what the old games included, yet the CG was phenomenal and everyone can admit that. However with a combination of graphical improvement and AI and environmental interaction, we can achieve the console that Iwata believes we cant, the graphical leap doesnt have to be as high as expected if other areas are taken into account and improved also.
Its a pretty open topic and like I said, Im neither for nor against the near future release of next generation console but I just think that the graphical change wouldnt be such a huge deal if some developers realised the importance of other areas of gaming.
Human computer interaction, AI detail, Environmental interaction and ergonomics, surely these things are equally as important to make that jump to the next generation as graphics are...right?

Although I'm a firm believer that PC gaming will always be better than console gaming, I do agree that a lot of things are lacking in games. More and more developers aren't coming out with anything original. Look at COD. It's the same thing over and over and over except it has a 2 or black ops behind "Call of Duty" now. I think this video adequately describes many people's frustrations. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W1ZtBCpo0eU

When the effort has been put it... I think you mean "in?" lol

And this one lol: other areas "or" gaming... "of?" :)

Except you don't even need a next generation console to change that, you just need better programmers/developers.

Snes-- & N64 : Cartridge
PS1: CD-Rom
PS2: DVD-Rom
PS3: BluRay
PS4: BluRay
Technology has improved, sure, but it just hasn't made the giant leap yet to call it a next generation.
We haven't seen the jump into holographic disks yet (prototypes do exist). When that happens, we will have reached the next generation, but for now, it's just a marketing ploy to get us to spend all our money all over.

Iwata's just mad because no one in his company will tell him when the Wii U is coming out or how much it will cost, so he's lashing out at the competition in frustration.

I have been saying all along that the games for the current crop of consoles just pale in comparrison compared to the old stuff. The deveolpers really need to focus on more then just grphics now adays. Take the people behind the mod Nehrim At Fates Edge for oblivion and you can see what deveoplers who care can really do and they are current working on a similar mod for skyrim called Enderal.
Now if the big developers can put that much care into their games then we will have a lot of qaulity games instead of the current crop of lackluster pushies we have now. When I say pushies I mean they were inro updates then just pushed out the door for a quick buck. It just sickens me to see what the gaming industry has gotten to today. We need more people with vision that can get us back on track and stop pushing out the same crap over and over. We need true inovation in games. I am a die hard pc gamer through and through becuase the games on the consoles just do not cut it for me any more. I have all 3 consoles in the house and have played all three but I keep coming back to my pc gor the true gaming experince that once was.

Yeah, right. Having to upgrade your PC-hardware all the time, installing updates, new drivers, solving conflicts with games (wrong pixelshader, missing patches) and so on is far more better then just putting a gamedisc in your console and start playing immediately.
Modern consolegames support keyboard and mouse-support. You can get specialized PS3 combosets that allow you to play your favorite FPS with the the same ease as a PC-gamer.
Computergames originated on consoles since 1972. Maybe the graphics are a bit better on PC but it is much more fiddling around to get it working. I do not want to spend a lot of time waiting till the game finally finished installing. For all those reasons I think consoles are still better for gaming.
