We all know that Sony is working on the next addition to the PlayStation lineup, the PS4/Orbis. FCC documents have surfaced showing that Sony may be wanting to push another model to the PS3 before it goes.
FCC filings have shown that a new console with a relatively different design as well as model number has been submitted. According to the radio test, the model name of the new model is CECH-4001. If you've been following the model revisions, the Phat consoles were CECHA - CECHQ. The Slim consoles were CECH-200x series, then the CECH-21xx, CECH-25xx and CECH-30xx series. Another thing to note is that a debugging version of the console has also been sent in for testing and approval.
With the model number in the next thousand and the filing indicating a new design, it's rather interesting what Sony is doing with this.

I bet they're testing out new security features to be implemented in the PS4, and they wanna see if the community can hack it.

Are you suggesting this is the PS4? I think it's more likely to be a trimmed down version of the PS3, maybe the PS3 Go - no HDD or BD, just 8 GB flash to store PSN titles and video of you pretending to be Luke Skywalker with a Move controller. And instead of Ethernet or Wi-Fi, it uses AT&T 3G. It will be priced $98.99 and require 23 months of PSN subscription at $18.99/month (1 better than Microsoft on every count).
Or maybe it's the PS4.

Maybe they are going to add PS2 support again? purhaps adding a physical chip so that it can hardware run PS2 games rather than software emulate them.

software? BC on the Ps3 has never been software only. Latest BC models used software for the Emotion Engine (the Ps2 CPU), but they still needed hardware for the Graphics Synthesizer. Non BC Ps3 have the sotware for the EE, but lack software or hardware for a GS.

There's even less of a reason for PS2 compatibility now than a few years ago when it was removed.

The reason why i think they will be adding PS2 BC again is coz they are probably going to stop producing new PS2 consoles. See back when the PS3 came out and had the BC chip built in, they were still selling heaps of PS2 consoles...now when someone bought a PS3 they had no reason to buy a PS2 if they wanted to play PS2 games since their new PS3 had th support. So what they did was strip out the PS2 BC from the PS3 so that even if someone owned a PS3 they would need to buy a PS2 to play PS2 games.
Now with the PS4 looming around the corner they will almost certainly stop making PS2 consoles in their factories.
As i said before, the only reason why it would have been smart for them to remove the PS2 BC from PS3's was coz PS2's were still hugely popular and selling well, but these days they are very old so it wont really hurt their sales by including PS2 BC in this "New" PS3 version thats coming out.

Nope. If people are still buying PS2, Sony will continue to make them. If people don't want PS2, then Sony will stop making them. So, if people stop buying the PS2 and Sony stops making them, why would they put it in the PS3? Futhermore, they will likely continue to find ways to make the PS3 cheaper to sell more, and adding PS2 compatiblilty would make it more expensive (with little or no perceived value to most people).

I dont really have any proof of what im saying but im going to bet that within 6 months the PS2 will cease manufacturing and the next PS3 model will have PS2 backwards compatability! Mark my words :)
