 Category 1: Graphics and Gameplay

I suppose before we get to the real hardcore topics, I should first define what I mean by classic gaming. For me, this more or less hits on anything that is not in the 3D polygon era. That means, I'm stretching somewhere between the Atari and the Super Nintendo-Genesis battles to make my decision. Obviously a case can be made that more systems could be included by now, but we'll try and keep things simple. With regards to the graphics and gameplay of these titles. One thing I will say is that for each generation they more or less looked the same across the board graphically. Obviously you had stand outs every now and again, but in the scope of things what you were able to do with graphics and hardware was really somewhat limited. That's why you had new hardware coming out more often back in the day. Today, in terms of presentation, the current console lineup has been on the market for about seven years and people are still managing to push consoles to their limits and new heights.

In terms of gameplay, I think it's really more a matter of which style you personally prefer because both essentially get the job done. If simplicity is what you're after, then run and jump mechanics from classic games are going to win your heart over quite quickly. If you want something more intricate, then games today will probably satisfy your urge. I think one of  the major issues with today's games though is that when titles become more expansive there's more things that can go wrong with regards to camera and stuff like that. Classic games more or less had the basic movements nailed down, and it was more about getting those basic functions implemented well to an attractive premise that helped them succeed.

Overall, this is in a way an Apple/Orange issue, but I think the fact that you can do more with modern SDKs gives today's games just a very slight edge here, but I certainly don't want to say the old games are bad either.

Winner: Modern Games

Next up we'll see which era had the best in game music!

I remember when Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat came out for the SNES we used to cut class just to play. Just passing around the controller to see who was the best was the true fun factor. New games are online so that fun factor of passing around the controller is not there anymore.

I still play MK and SF on my xbox 360 (arcade ones). Now and then, we gather around 5 to 10 ppl to play UMK3. That's real fun.

Lol don't even get me started on classic games. I could go on for days. Mike Tyson's Punch Out....even some less known games like Gunsmoke for NES. maybe it's just nostalgia that makes them so good, but I miss the old days.

Agree with everyone here, classic gaming was the best, all the way up to the ps2 era games were fun without much graphics, now most games have become repetitive (every new game out there is just another FPS, no new games with no new gameplay)

Nostalgia is a big part of why some of us will agree, but for the "facts" side, my son enjoys playing the classics like Mario, Donkey Kong, and Sonic. So it has to be more than nostalgia that makes those games and systems seem better.

See we MUST be right! Donkey Kong country will always be epic. That's a seriously great point though. Thanks for sharing!

I miss those times when games were cheap and you could trade them no matter what the system was. It would be a wise decision for the world`s leading companies to implement an universal platform, put into production by everyone by the same standard and each would receive the amount of money regarding to the percentage of technology and development that each contributed.I think it would be a win-win for everyone, and there would be no shortage of games. We all know it is easier to develop for a single platform than for several others.(i`m talking about compatibility issues)

A universal platform is a dream but I'm not sure how it will play out. If games become streamable rather than on consoles, it may be easier to get more games than what we have now. Only time will tell, but I like your thinking!

From The Atari To The PS2 / Original Xbox Was Probably The Best Run For Games That Offered Great Game Play All Around But Graphics Wasn't To Bad, I Guess If You Played Those Systems. Since The Current Gen Releases For Most Part It's Been All About Online & Graphics. Long Story Short The Power Or Control Of What You Wanted To Do With Your System Was Entirely Up To You & Dependency Of Great Game Play Wasn't Entirely Dependent On Online Connectivity, Now It's All About Up Selling & Rushing Incomplete Games Out Because Developers Know They Can Just Update Them & Once Again Making Online Play A Must & Is Hopefully Intact. It's Like In Gaming Up Till The Ps2 / Original Xbox Developers Actually Had To Really Think To Make The Games Shine Game-play Wise & Graphically Because They Weren't Working With As Much Power As Now But Those Games Would Be Assume, Now Since They Have More Power To Play With & Development Is Easier They've Gotten Lazy & Obviously Ran Out Of Ideas Because They Constantly Re Make Those Classic. I Bet They Gonna Remake God A War For Ps4 With More Powerful Graphics, Just A Thought. The Gaming Industry Is Changing & I'm Almost Tempted To Say If You Ain't Got No Older Hardware You Better Collect Just For Rainy Day. Soon You Might Not Be Able To Play The Game If It's Not Connected To The Internet. :D

to me the best era is NES, SNES. at that time. people still making game base on their love and having time to creat thing.
game nowaday being pushed by investor so they can " earn " money. there is no more room for love and time. i feel like eating noodle everyday rather than having a cool feast.

I play since atari, my consoles was:

Atari > Snes > Playstation 1 > PS2 > N64 > DreamCast > X360 > PS3!

But from all those i prefer the PS1, because of the games and a whole new generation! Games like: Tomb Raider, MK4, Mortal Kombat Mithologies, Resident Evil, Suikoden II, Final Fantasy VII, 8, 9, Thousand Arms, and many other games made a very good time on my life!

# It's because of the internet...Nightwatchman 2013-01-17 17:40
I remember the "Sega vs Nintendo" wars... they were huge, and then came Sony (PSX vs Saturn) and by that time the use of the Internet became more widespread and the first signs of the nowadays "trolling" came along (I remember reading some BBSes about PSX this, Saturn that...). When Microsoft joined the console wars back in 2001 the real "My X console is better than your Y console" trolling started... Believe me, if the internet (as we know it these days) would have been so widely available back in the days of Nintento vs Sega wars as it is today, we would have experienced this consequences earlier...

It was micro$oft! They showed the other other companies how to squeeze every penny off the consumers. Their gaming network charged you for almost everything and they started all these paid DLC scheme for consoles which (of course) developers loved because they could earn more money just by adding extra levels or some simple dull textures (the SIMS anyone?) besides the $50 USD the consumer already paid for the game. When the current generation finally arrived (you know whose company's console was the first one), the price of games went through the roof ($69 USD) and the other companies followed that trend. I imagine a conversation like this: Hey, why must we charge $50 for a game when our competitor is charging $70? Heck, let's earn some serious money! We are the powers that be after all! Consumers will pay the price we tell them to pay! and that's were they lost me..... That's why I think the best console generation was the mid 90s one (PSX, N64, GBColor, heck! even Saturn!), because of the new trends it set, although many of them have been biased towards profit.
