geohot Donates Leftover Defense Funds to EFF

Georgy Hotz, a man of his word, donating your leftover defense donations -- $10,000 big ones -- to EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) "in hopes that America can one day again be a shining example of freedom, free of the DMCA and ACTA" ... which'll probably never happen.

What are your thoughts on geohot settling? While we don't know the exact details of the settlement, is he [geohot] still your hacker hero or do you consider him a scared ass? I can tell you one thing for sure: If Sony was suing me I would've backed down a lot quicker than geohot did ... and I probably would've kept the leftover defense funds, disappearing to Canada or some other DMCA-free zone. :) Whatever the case -- geohot -- you got my respect. i think george got a better deal than most of us think,
when he was asked if he could talk about any of the settlement, he replied he could talk about dogs and chickens.

i am thinking there might of been a message in that:

dog = ydl yellow DOG linux

chickens = chickHENS, AS IN HEN, HOMEBREW ENABLERS.

Well, as a defense attorney myself, if the case would have gone to trial the cost of attorney fees usually double, if not triple. Sometimes it is best to settle due to financial, lack of evidence, or what the consequences are if the case is lost. He lasted a lot longer than I would have suspected. His defense team wouldn't have been enough compared against a team of five or six who have specialized in all of Sony's legalities.

Until you're sitting there in the courtroom taking on a mega-conglomerate, you don't have the right to say ANYTHING negative about Geohot. We don't know the details of what happened, why they happened, or what it means for us. But I do know that sooner or later, you have to put on the brakes and cut your losses. Better to retreat and live to fight another day, than go down in a blaze of foolish personal glory and have nothing to show for it.

Like alot of you,I feel a bit let down by Geohotz decision to deal with the devil.The main reasons I'm bothered by his behavior during all this...he first accepted and even asked for donations for legal fees in order to fight SONY.He said he would not accept a settlement without the return of the 'OtherOs' feature and an apology from SONY.Was he thinking about settling with SONY while he vacationed in Brazil?

And now the subsequent attempt to 'save face' through this donation to the EFF.Why didn't he donate the rest to Graf?I'm sure he could use it being that his fight with SONY will go on.The donation money was to fight SONY...wasn't it?

It may very well be that SONY played this whole situation from the beginning.

You may feel let down, but until you're on the other side of a million dollar defense team, you really have no right in judging his settlement actions. Of course Geohotz would have liked to have the terms in his favor, but he does not have the money to back up his defense. The terms were more likely to be in favor of Sony, but will remain unknown until further notice. If I had to guess, I would say his attorney fees were in the range of $70,000-90,000 if the case went to trial.
