EA Wants Dead Space to Morph into Something Else

Submitted by OS_Gamer; November 30, 2011

Kotaku says that the folks at EA are looking to milk more money out of the successful Dead Space franchise, so much so that they nearly killed the development of Dead Space 3. Apparently, they want to take away the traditional over-the-shoulder perspective common in survival horror of the first two games and want the developers to consider a FPS, a space combat game, and an "Uncharted-like game."

It's not like expansion is something new to the Dead Space universe, which has previously expanded into a rail-shooter and a puzzle game, but in this case it looks like EA wants to ditch the core concept and gameplay of the franchise. Somehow, however, Dead Space 3 has survived the customary EA gouging of a great franchise. The third installment of the series will be the last for protagonist engineer Isaac Clarke and will take place on a stark, bright, icy world that will provide a lot of contrast with the perpetual darkness of the first two games.

Once again it seems like EA's motto is, "If it ain't broke, fix it." Looking for more money is the way companies have to function to survive, but it's a shame to see them gamble with a beloved franchise. It's not likely that the survival horror element will shine through some of the changes (i.e. the space combat), but a further exploration of the Dead Space universe should be interesting.

EA will do things like this to 'beloved' franchises purely to treat it like a test.

Think about it, its the final dead space for isaac, possibly the final dead space dependant on sales figures, so, with a fan base of its current size it will still make millions worth of profit even if its bad.

People will buy it because of their previous experience with dead space, if the customer reception to the new gameplay goes down well, theyre onto a winner, if it goes bad they can shrug it off as an 'ending' to isaac and/or dead space, then if they choose to make a fourth theyl just revert back to the tried and tested.

Simply put, EA arent risking anything by doing this, theyre manipulating a huge audience as free test dummies for their new gameplay at the customers cost.

R.I.P. Dead Space. It was fun knowing ya and enjoyed the first two games immensely.

Seriously, keep the 3rd person perspective, continue the story line, and keep the setting in a dark and scary place. OMG is that so hard?

this is why i hate EA they constantly try so hard to change a game and forget that the game is perfect as it is, this is why the first 2 did so well and in the end they make the game worse.

if they go making the 3rd into a fps then it will just feel like a doom clone, i dont get how they can make a fps like uncharted kinda game, erm uncharted isnt a fps nor is it a horror.

i love the statement tho its so fricking true, "if it aint broke-fix it" tho i wouldnt say fix it, i think its more accurate to say "if it aint broke-break it"
