It was announced at E3 Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider franchise is receiving a reboot and the new games trailer has the sent the web on fire with its controversial depictions of how Lara got so tough. Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics are rebooting the Tomb Raider franchise and the trailer for the 2013 title show at E3 was epic plain and simple, the controversy comes from a scene in the trailer that shows an attempted sexual assault of Lara and has set the web aflame with message boards and forums arguing if the story depicted in the trailer goes too far and poses a risk to the safety of women. Now before we go an further I suggest you take a look at the trailer below.
I personally think there is nothing wrong with the way the story is being depicted even if it depicts what could be called a sexual assault of Lara as it is like any other story telling medium be it a film, book, or a game its art and its open to your own interpretation. Some people have been complaining that the fact that a game is interactive makes this a potentially sticky situation for the developer and the publisher in some markets where control of what is allowed in games is far more regulated (Germany, Australia…)
The simple fact is you are not playing the attacker you are Lara and this game is exactly what it sets out to be, its the story of how she became the smart, strong and heroic character we all know her as from the previous games and the movies and makes her quite possibly the strongest female role model in gaming history. But thats enough of what I think lets here what you think, leave us a comment below or in the forum linked below and tell us if you think that the game goes to far.

Probably the best Tomb Raider I'm gonna play. :)

judging by how the trailer is put together I'm thinking that scene is more or less a cut scene and removes that aspect of possibility but I cant say for sure.

I don't think it went too far, in fact I think it fits perfectly. Laura had to protect herself and she did and going through something like that will definitely make you do everything to get out of there. Good prequel.

I always thought that tomb raider was very light hearted. The comics in comparison were a lot more gritty. While the new look of laura kind of throws me off, i'm happy its moving more in this direction. It looks a lot more "hollywood" though I guess we'll have to wait and see if that's a good or bad thing.

This is controversial? Seriously this is like every other modern cinematic game. If this trailer had a male character in its place no one would have gave two sh*ts about it being wrong. The people who find this controversial are stupid. First these idiots are complaining about woman being treated like nothing more then sex objects but the minute female characters start getting portrayed as a real person. People start railing against the female characters being treated as a normal person.

It's an action game. What happens when the Laura gets hit or shot while playing? I don't hear people yelling "Abuse! Abuse!". People need to get over it. It's a part of the story.

well what i think is that if this is a reboot this will be her first adventure and in time she will become the badass we all know her to be... remember this is her first adventure

Seems almost as if the whole game is cgi cutscenes with the occasional horrible fighting mechanics, and sniping scenes, quicktime events

Well, it's hardly irreversible.
Also since when did Lara start getting called Laura?
