Change Custom Firmware Without USB Pen Drive

Submitted by Tranced_1; January 26, 2012

A psx-scene Shaitan has released a method were you can change firmwares without the need of a USB pen drive. With this method, that requires QA Flag, you are able to store various custom firmwares on your hard drive and select which one to install via the System Update -> Update via Hard Disk option.

Use QA Flag Extra since most firmwares can not enable "System Update Debug".
  • Enable QA Flag Extra and go to the debug settings and enable "System Update Debug"
  • Use Multiman's file manager(or other) and create a folder in /dev_hdd0 called "updater", so it's /dev_hdd0/updater/
  • Create folders in that directory for the firmwares called 01, 02, 03, ect. (Dont miss a number or it will error).
  • Copy whichever PS3UPDAT.PUP into one of those folders and........
  • Rename it to whatever you want, you dont even need the .PUP at the end.
  • Go to System Update then Update via Hard Disk

You can use whatever you want, without the dongle the CFW is useless to you.

Just sayin, I think to dual boot you need two NOR chips...

Hi there,

Only to clarify things:

 - This only works on 3.55 (jailbroken) PS3 !

 - Using 3.56+ firmwares (like 4.00 OFW) will delete the "jailbroken" state of your machine !

 - You can switch easily between OFW, CFW/MFW or even Dongle firmwares within 3 minutes whithout the need of an USB stick.

A simple example of use could be the possibility to switch between Cobra FW and True Blue FW in 3 minutes for those who possess the Dongles and need to often switch between these.

Of course, as said above, to use Dongle firmwares you need the Dongle !

I hope this was not a serious question? Try to re-read the post if it is. Sorry if I am a "rude-ass", I just got bored of this question asked over and over..

Would have been nice if the poster would have stated which firmwares this works on.

It allows you to switch between any firmware you want without having them on an external source. No you obviosly cant go from 4.00 OFW to CFW 3.55 without a downgrade tool. This lets you switch between 3.55 (or whatever you have) to other official or custom firmwares of the same or higher fimware number.

This works with any firmware that you can use QA flag, and of course not above 3.55

yes this allows OFW to CFW easily , so as long as its below 3.55  .  a real downdgrader would be so nice. 4.11 to 3.55 .and back to 4.11
