Battlefield 3: Close Quarters Inspired by The Matrix

Submitted by OS_Gamer; March 20, 2012

Yes, The Matrix. Well, that and a little Counter-Strike tournament play thrown in for good measure, according to the lead designer.

Niklas Fegraeus, the lead designer of Battlefield 3: Close Quarters, has posted a new blog over at The Battlefield Blog that talks about his inspiration for the new expansion. He says that it was his time as a semi-pro Counter-Strike player that formed the basis of the idea that grew into Close Quarters.

The frantic, room-to-room fighting in some of those tournaments was particularly exhilarating to him. "There is something very unique about an indoor fire fight," he says. "You have to cover angle in new ways, use sound to track enemies, navigate with much more careful precision, and most importantly, you're never safe. Danger is always no more than a few meters away. It's a scenario that always makes me feel 100% in the fight. There is no dull momnet, you're always on your toes, on the edge."

He also says the scene in The Matrix in which Neo and Trinity take on a whole lobby of armed guards, reducing the room's walls to rubble in the process, was another inspiration. He said he and art designer Jhony Ljundstedt both agreed that nothing like that had really been done in a game - and they wanted to do it.

He also posted the video below that shows a timelapse of a firefight in the new expansion and what the environment will look like once all's said and done.

Close Quarters will be out in June.
