Are Dongles the Devil?

Submitted by tbag; March 23, 2012

As we all know there are a slew of PS3 Dongles out there now, ranging from the True Blue to Cobra USB each offering their own unique yet similar features. There has been quite a bit of controversy over whether or not they are good for the scene or just damaging it.  For instance when asked what would you undo in the mod community wololo said The TrueBlue dongle . The main reason for most objections is that… well they cost money and some people believe that the Devs should be creating free to use options over the pay out of pocket option.

Personally I don't like the Dongles as generally speaking their only function is to allow piracy and we have seen the damage that rampant piracy can do to a system. The PSP is the most recent and obvious example as games started to die off and less and less big dev's where putting out good games because the games were dumped and posted online as soon as it came out and the money just wasn't there anymore.  Another example that comes to mind is the Deamcast, Sega's last try at the home console... this was more of a design flaw than anything else, allowing things to run off of a normal CDRom disc on a totally unmodified console.

Dont get me wrong there is some good that came out of the dongles too.  For example when the PS3 first came out it came complete with the PS2 emotion chip that allowed ps2 compatibility but due to the cost of manufacturing it was removed and replaced with software emulation.  Then that too was removed. The Cobra USB gives PS2 support back to the user.  Oh and lets not forget that the start of homebrew on the PS3 was through the use of Dongles.  So lets take a look at some of the reasons many are for or against the dongles and their uses and effect on the mod community.

FOR

AGAINST

Play Backups Via HDD/USB

Piracy Hurts the Community

PS2 Support on New Consoles (Cobra USB)

Could Be Offered as an Open Source Project

Some Offer a Type of Downgrade

They Cost Money

The Ability to Play Games Requiring 3.55+ Firmware

Could Lead to Less Great Games to be Released

Started Homebrew on PS3

-

Could Lead to Homebrew Without Dongle

-

Im not trying to single out either of the Dongles Ive mentioned in this article, they just happen to be the two main Dongles on the market right now.  If any of the clones like JB2USB added anything to the mix than they would have been used as an example… but they don't…. they are a clone.  So whether youre for or against the Dongles, what they bring to the table in functionality is simply awesome and inspiring and Im sure someone will figure out how to get the features into your PS3 without the need for a Dongle one day.  Until that happens people will continue to argue over whether they are good or bad for the community.  So why not tell us what you think about all of this and leave a comment below.

The TB dongle is awesome to use to play your legitimately-owned 3.60+ games from HDD. I don't pirate them, but I wouldn't even BUY the game if the dongle didn't let my [only] 3.55 PS3 play it!

I'd rather punch myself in the dick than pay $100 for an overhyped game that sucks or one that can be finished in a day. $80 for a dongle that will expand on the features original ps3 consoles have seems worth it to me. I love my Cobra dongle. I only wish it was compatible with the TB hacks. Plus, if Sony didn't try and tell us all what we can and cannot do with the hardware we own, there would be less demand for dongles.

I have two PS3's, One for online play(I buy the games straight up). The other for homebrew and just scratching my hackers itch! I love the backup function though for one reason, less wear on my drive. Sony should let us install to the HDD like the 360 does.(this is the whole reason my brother got me to modify his console) When they stopped online play with 3.55 he bought a newconsole and now rents and backs up games to his HDD. Sounds like they made a pirate out of him. He still buys multiplayer games but refuses to buy a single player game for 60 bucks. What else is he left to do with the modified console besides play Mario? He is going to get a true blue he said. Same as any console though, they all get hacked and and backups made. Thats what put xbox on the map. Stop trying to stop it so much and accept it, find ways to make us want to purchase a game new. More features, online ,DLC and such.

Piracy is an answer to insanely inflated gameprices. As long as games are rediculously expensive piracy will have a big enough base to start up on any console/medium.

Why would DLC convince people to buy it. COMPLETE games at a reasonable price convinces people to buy it new.

If companies weren't so willing to fuck over customers, priacy wouldn't be as big of a issue as it is today.

I think piracy is important, or hackers or underground movement, and you know why?

Because of that scene they can’t sell us crap to make a lot of money from us; they actually have to invest time and effort.

Did you notice how many new games come out all the time? And how the development length is so short for some games?

It’s to make money, and if it wouldn’t be for the scene, there would be more money for them, that’s the only reason they want to get rid of it. It doesn’t hurt the developers, they get regular pay anyway.

And I think the movie industry is great example too, movies that costs 30 million dollars in production costs is almost the average, and even a bad movie, and it will still make that money back any which way, because many ppl pay for it and then get disappointed, but that doesn’t stop them. How can you justify a movie that makes 200 million on a weekend? Even 50 million, consider how many years it would take you under any pay to even save a million, it could calculate that for you but I am too lazy.

That’s why there is occupy, anonymous, and others should join, so there is a balance between powers, its just too much, anyone with a little bit of history should know that things where better in the past because the gap between rich and poor was not that big.

Rich ppl do not contribute to the economic, they buy only stuff that is too expensive for normal ppl, doesn’t involve major manufacturing or research or development, and neither hires a lot of ppl. And because of that we will slow down in scientific breakthroughs, either because of greed (undermine inventors, steal their ideas, and lock it away), they keep selling us the same product over and over again, cell phones, each month (DAY!) a new one. Also that is getting balanced out thru counterfeit items, but that’s bad because you actually getting a cheap product (Greed, because the profit margin didn’t change, just the materials)

Read up, educate, be aware, participate, and care. If not then we are certainly doomed.

Like global warming, common fact now, and not too long ago it was fought with syndical skepticism, even fought on a government legal pursuit, and blackmailing and corruption. But also now that it is a fact… nothing happened either

Guess some ppl just do not want to wake up... or think they can take the money with them even after they died.

And yea, all this will hit you in your lifetime, so keep ignoring it, and you'll be surprised.

Oh and another thing, I been there done it and experienced it, it’s not fantasy its reality, try to break out of line anywhichway and see what happens (Be it as an artist, free speech, inventor ...
