To be honest I don't think Sony is going to race to try to keep ahead of jailbreak FW after the first few initial attempts (IF that), the intelligent hackers will have it exploited within a few days and Sony will have to update again and again and again.

Sony knows they are screwed, personally I think that they saw it coming for a while, probably had personal knowledge of it, thus their upcoming hardware option releases such as the external CPU and PS2 attachment.

Sony will sell MORE consoles, the real losers of the jailbreak piracy scene is the game developers. Easy fix for that though, just have to release keys to be registered online with each online capable game, anyone who wants to play will purchase.

I'll be honest though, piracy wouldn't be as rampant if game prices weren't so retardedly high, add that to the games being released with less initial content and having to buy what should have been released with it (not in all cases) really makes me turn a blind eye towards piracy.

Yeah I think Sony will profit from this big time. I never owned a ps3 (did 1 and 2) but if this is possible i will be buying 2 ps3's ...mainly for hooking up an external hard drive loaded with movies and emulators with all the old school games. Im really tired of Sony and Microcrap making us watch only video files with certain video and audio encoding. This thing could do much much more and had it we probably wouldnt even be posting right now. I was thinking just to build an HTPC (Home theater pc) but the ps3 is geared more towards gaming and does a much better job in my opinion that a box running win 7... and streaming mkv files from a pc is retarded. The fact that you cant format ntfs or hfs+(mac) and are restricted to files under 4gb is also a getmedowner. So many fooking restrictions for an awesome machine... NOT ANYMORE BOOYA! You guys act like this is the first time developers will loose out... they have been loosing since the very begining of this generation & previous ones as well. they decided to give microsoft exclusives and work better on games that were third party on the 360 meanwhile that shit was hacked since the first few months of its arrival. If they wanted to make money they should backed up the PS3 the first few years since the console was unhackeble at the time. In a way we finally win since developers are just giving us 75% completed games for $60 and charging us the rest in DLC... when u come to look at it u will spend about $85-$90 for a title...

personally i think that sony will be skrewed either way they try to fix this hack.
on one side they could release an update that would "fix" this, but, any game that was released prior to this update will no longer work under the new release of fw
on the other hand they could just release a new ps3 that would no longer (theoretically) be hackable, but, if they did this then they would lose out as well as aggrivating the entire group of ps3 buyers.
one last thing they could do is plead and beg the game developers to release an entire new set of games that make it unplayable to play on the hacked ps3, and only making these new games available through the play-station network... which would make the ps3 comparable to the psp-go... and well, that hasn't gone over too well, not too well at all....

I definitely agree with you strahd. There may be some legitimate homebrew fans on here, but most of them are just posing as fans whilst they await Backup Manager support and silently grab the backup enabled CFW when it is released. It has been annoying me to see people speaking of legitimate backups, the only reason I hacked my Wii was for downloaded games and definitely not backing up my bought Wii games. The same goes for PS3. When someone releases a backup enabled CFW, I guarantee you a hell of a lot more people are going to download it than you'd expect.

you can't (yet) the firmware is written on NAND storage (if i'm richt) not on the ps3 harddrive. else i've lost my firmware a long time ago...

maybe some devs might find a way to put firmware on a hdd partition and let you choose which one to boot. but i don't think that will happen anywhere soon.

I dont know about you but I like 3D movies and games and right now if your on 3.41 your stuck also this opens the door for playing backups online. And to answer your questsion downgrading IS NOT SAFE AT ALL!! It can brick your console and also wipe out your hard drive. The more prolific this homebrew thing gets, the more random people come here and go "OK BUT HOW CAN I PLAY BACKUPS ONLINE?!?!"

People, I'm waiting for the same thing. Most of us are. We all wanna be on 3.55 and still get to do what we wanna do. It's just gonna take time... just check the homepage once a day, you'll get your updates soon.

This whole PS3 homebrew thing is moving like lightning now. Look how long it took to crack this console: it was released Dec 06, we didn't have homebrew available (correct me if I'm wrong) until ~Oct 2010. And now that we have it, we've found master keys, created signed homebrew, played backups, hell, future-proofed most games even if we CAN'T update.

This stuff is moving faster than most of us would've thought. A little patience won't kill you. Enjoy your single-player games for now, that's what I've been doing! And when we get online, we can watch our 3D movies and play MAG or Black Ops or whatever your deal is.

Out of every 10 consoles we boot now, only one or two bricks for some odd reason. We believe it to be something with the consoles NAND memory and it's patching of Lv2 at somepoint during the startup. During initial boot up systems loading times seemed increased. After modification of Lv2, these systems were the ones that bricked. Good news is that we have had no bricks of Slims within are last hour of testing (about 40 systems) and our methods are greatly improved. George has told me that he hopes to have this to the masses before Friday of next week or even sooner. The file that we have to do this currently sits at 4MB. The jailbreak can be used on any type of USB Flash Drive.

Surely if for example, we sign a back up manager and some emulators (and other homebrew), we can just plug and install onto the OFW?

Considering it enables unsigned stuff to be run- when we actually have the keys to be able to sign things, I'm confused ://... Or is this so that people who have previously downloaded unsigned games can run them without having to reinstall the signed versions??

This is not a permabreak. It's firmware with no sig check. A jailbreak is different as it allows admin/su access to the system, similar to the way cellphones become jailbroken. The cfw released can't use bm because of that. There was a program created by a team for the 360 that can turn isos into program install files though. If someone wants to look into that and do some work. It would only need to be able to seek an external drive because 8 gb and up games would fill most currently installed hdd's up quick. May need to be cfw implemented for choosing an install location for games from pkg.

Wow, this is promising. This would definitely help me on my upcoming deployment. I'll be stuck on a boat for about 7 months, with limited space. If I could back all my games up on the HDD and not have to worry about bringing my HTC EVO with me, it would be great! Hopefully this comes out soon, and before I leave. I use to mess around with my HTC EVO 4g kernel to overclock and higger FPS. What the kernel does is it sits in the middle of the OS and the CPU like a walkway. When you give a order to the OS it must go to the kernel then go to the CPU so the CPU can take the order. When you start messing around with the kernel its telling the CPU to run faster or to run custom code. I think when we better understand how the kernel works in the PS3 however is when we can run a backup manager and maybe even overclock or turn on the PS3 from a hot start and still be Jailbroken that could take sometime. Lets just hope for the best.

Maybe they could make some type of loader that could boot up and load the orginal 3.55 from sony or the hacked 3.55 custom.

Not sure if this is possible but if so that would make it undetectable. Online play uses sonys 3.55 offline games use the 3.55 custom. A lot of people would be happy with that but some would be pissed as they want everything for free.

why not just make a way to put the entire game in the HDD but still require the ORiGINAL disc to boot it up? just like xbox. u put install and just need the game to start it up.

if they want the game to load faster this solves their problem. If they dont want the game to scratch this solves their problem. If their drive is fd up. then to bad for you, get it repaired and take care of you stuff.

This, in my opinion, will be the only way go to legit on real "BACK UPS" and solve those two issues above.

I agree, he never released the Other OS hack, the latest releases hes done up to this point were basically taking someone else's stuff and making an app out of it (and yet somehow he's all of a sudden credited with getting the keys himself), and he did make that comment about working for the other side.

If his track record is anything, chances are this won't see the light of day, he just appears interested in getting the fame and playing the game. If it works and it's doable, release it damnit!

(PS, i don't find this hack all that far fetched anyway. Logically, you have the keys to sign a custom firmware or app, you make the app so it updates the firmware to enable the peek poke etc, and install package files (which other people have done before, so nothing extremely new there), then you run the installer, it hacks the system and ur good to go. In all honesty, pretty cool for us, but unless the efforts are released, Id stop giving this guy publicity.
