Sony getting their equipment might lead to patching further Custom Firmware.

The way I see it, were angering Sony and I'm hoping we just don't get them mad enough to dish out where they make us pay for internet like Microsoft. Guess will just see how far this goes ;)

when will we be able to run backups ??!
has anyone thought about making an app that patchs a game so you can run it from xmb,i know the patching can be done manually but it way over my nooby head, and i think it's the case for a lot of us here
the same(or somewhat similar) app is available to decrypt psp games, patch them and re-encrypt them, and it even works form the xmb of the psp(iso-tool x.xx)
anyway i just want to run wipeout hd fury,if someone could be kind enough to help me?anyway possible?

How much common sense does it take? Seriously! Two of the greatest hackers I barely know are in deep legal trouble and all you care about is getting off with $20 worth of games?! It's obvious ANYONE asking for a backup manager, or a way to run .iso's, or a way to do some other discless launch is a pirate. Enough. Seriously, people.
-pants- Okay, on topic now..
I'm no lawyer, but I laughed my face off last night when I read the "Complaint". There's so many loopholes in that document and way too many inaccuracies. Sony obviously has no idea what they're doing.
On a similar token, so far, all the tools released only seem to run if one has the knowledge to compile them. I say, we try to keep it this way. Seeing the comments on previous entries, I like to think it's stopped most pirates in their tracks. Keep things open source (Or at least obfuscated, but not compiled), keep things Linux-based, and I think Sony's safe from any gigantic profit losses.
In short: Sony, find better lawyers or bring OtherOS back in your next update. It certainly can't get any *worse*.. Frankly, all some of us want is a nice octal core CPU to run as a server. Geohot, good luck, not that you need it though. Fail0verflow, I don't know your situation as well as Geohot's, but good luck just the same. Everyone else out there only looking to run some nifty homebrew and rock out with Linux, cheers. Pirates (Or people seeking backup managers), shut it. PSN games and blu-ray are fast enough. I like the vintage feel of handling optical media. If you guys can't get up and put a disc into your PS3's drive, it's no wonder you can't hold a job and pay $20-40 for a game. If you can't afford that, you really shouldn't be playing games in the first place.

Mr. Hotz has never utilized an account with PayPal in connection with any activity relating to the Playstation computer. Affidavit of George Hotz ¶ 7. In fact, Mr. Hotz expressly tells people on his website not to give him donations for his efforts. Even more harmful to Sony’s personal jurisdiction argument, the only evidence put forward of Mr. Hotz’ Paypal account appears to be a transaction initiated by the plaintiff.

And for everyone crying for a backup manager, it'll come at some point. Stop "boycotting" Sony for protecting their property, as stupidly as they choose to do it, and I can support the BM until A) a legitimate way to replace broken/damaged discs fruits and B) when digital copies of games are cheaper than physical copies, because I'm sure bandwidth is much cheaper than transportation, packaging, etc.

As I said before:
"If you can't afford your games, you shouldn't have bought a gaming system!"
And:
"Homebrew all the way, emulators, XBMC-clones, better videoformat support and much more!!!

The amount is immaterial... that fact that he received it is what they were trying to prove. On the flip side, now it's more of what they were trying to do.
If I were GeoHot, I'd be counter suing the Hell out of them...
Or releasing what they fear most into the wild...

The SOLE reason I want an ISO loader (or backup manager, or any variation of the same) is so that I DO NOT have to swap discs. My son and I like playing various games on the PS3, namely Little Big Planet. And he does reasonably well to make sure he puts the discs in correctly, but truth be told there are hand-prints aplenty and scratching is inevitable ...
Same thing goes for my movie watching experience at home. I've ripped all of our children's movies and nearly all of our other movies to ISO so that they can be watched via XBMC, and for the same reason. It's not that I'm lazy and cannot afford to buy a new game when I want it, but I refuse to have my hard earned money wasted simply on scratched or broken disc, or disc drives (bd-rom drive failures rates are plenty high).
I understand that some 90% or more of the people that are looking for a backup manager or iso loader are only doing it for the purpose of piracy, but there are still quite a few of us that are looking to protect their investment and to better use the hardware we purchased.
I do agree with one comment you mentioned, the loading 'times' are sufficient from the bd-rom media, but abysmal on the PSP...

Since he never touched Sony's keys or anything in the first place there is really nothing Sony can do here.

So a nice app allowing the drive lasers type/key to be changed rather than a backup manager would be a good start.
Shame on you SONY for making something that fails in the masses and not supplying brand new parts as replacements.

But yea im kinda there with you man, i just started collecting like last year and got 100gb of movies LOLOLOL can't wait for it to pile up XD

Thank you for not flaming me! About five seconds after I posted I realized I may have well have just asked for sympathy in /b.
"sonyfails", I *am* in a worse situation (to me, anyway). I roleplay hardcore, but I can't draw and I've never been able to get someone to draw for me. I can't pay for a commission either. Does that give me the right to steal someone else's work? Nope, just gotta make due with what I got, and I've been going strong for almost a decade now.
Does the fact you don't have $20 or your parents won't give you $20 give you the right to steal $20? Nope, it doesn't. Seriously, dude, it's $20. Ask your parents for 50 cents of allowance a day or something, and in a month or so you'll have the $20. It usually takes me a month to stop playing a game I like.
Hopefully, this'll teach you to follow the rule of "waste not, want not". If you tear through a game and only let it last ten hours, then what happens when you're an adult and you're wasting your money with no way to recover?
Before someone replies to me and says "Ohhh but what about pirating/hacking? You don't want to let that evolve into adulthood!", let me explain what the *real* people with balls/big girl panties here are doing. The few of us that aren't trying to cheat our way into a free childhood are trying to open up possibilities. They're exploiting life (the PS3) to its fullest, away from the social norm (Sony tyranny) and onto bigger and better things. Sure, it's not hard. Sure, it has risks, but that's life/hacker scenes. Pirates/15 year old kids who don't give a dang, stop begging. We're not doing this for you, we're doing it for the people who want to help improve reality.
By the way, I learnt to use Linux without a GUI when I was twelve. Cracked my WEP key a week later. Changed to WPA another week later. Just because you're fifteen, doesn't mean you should still be sitting around all day and trying to pirate games. Yes, you're still a kid, but you're three years from being an adult. Get ready, or it's gunna hurt when reality hits you. By the way, I'm seventeen.

Even better is that on page 247 of the same document they show a screen shot of Gamefreax.com where they show the damn root key as reported by psx-scene. Which means now the "Private Key" is OFFICIALLY/LEGALLY a PUBLIC KEY because it is in a public document. LOL!

I'm on your side, but I believe the correct word is intelligent instead of intelligible.
in·tel·li·gi·bl e/in?telij?b?l/Adjective
1. Able to be understood; comprehensible.
2. Able to be understood only by the intellect, not by the senses.

first he loses other OS for everyone (after he has his iOS crying session and almost fucked up a jailbreak from other teams (pos1on) and then publishes and tries to take credit for fail0verflow`s work by publishing keys first, then basically copies the first CFW PKG installer again looking for credit with a few tweaks and on top of that he offered his services to Sony/MS/Ninty to prevent US the community for being able to run home-brew on future consoles. Why should we support him, what the fuck has he actually done to help the community? as far as i can see he is a liability and seems to attract attention for shit he mainly copies from others and is completely willing to screw us over for cash!
seriously give me one reason we should support him?

for the hack to work in the first place u had to open the system up and connect a few things to the system sony did not have to take out the option for the other os sony just took it out to be a prick to everyone there was no reason for this in the first place sony said they took the other os option so their system couldn't be hack by anyone but guess what its now fully hackable. again people do have a right to be f-ing pissed at geohot for this mess.
p.s. for the guy with the cod6 problem you just suck at the game because if the game was hack it would be all over the internet already noob.

A lot of court cases are already confusing to follow when they're are non-technical issues. Well this is going to make those cases look like pre-school math :) Once the tech terminology starts flying I can't imagine any judge being able to follow it unless Bill Gates or Larry Elison are sitting on the bench =)
I can't wait to hear more.

1. cod6 is hacked and a lot of people are cheating (seen it working myself)
2. cod6 being hacked has nothing to do with cfw as the hack isn't enabled by cfw
3. stop talking crap about geo as most of you will benefit or have benefited from his work. stop crying like little pussies and just appreciate what is given to you as you dont have the brains or the balls to do what they do.

Also for people to call out someone and treat them as an outcast for pure sense of wanting to show their love of computing science (TRUE MEANING OF HACKER HERE) I applaud geohots choice of saying a big FUCK YOU to all who did not sit back and bask in what happened.
Now if you want to blame someone you know who to blame SONY. There is nothing you can say to cover it up. SONY is the one that choose the path to condemn you to locked doors and masked freedoms.

1) sony made a fatal error in its security algo.
can this be repaired ? if fail0verflow /geohot can break it i'm sure there are others /sony will find a way to circumvent it..maybe crappier but effective method..nothin is permanent..sony wil have to find a way as its their responsibility..
2) sony took away otherOS (probably cos of geohot + scapegoat)...worst mistake by sony..
who lost ? hackin / homebrew community ..which may be a small % of the entire ps3 userbase.
as a gamer / media centre user i dont give a shit.. m happy runnin linux on desktop.
3) fail0verflow/geohot, indirectly / directly, expose ps3 security flaw to public..
who gains ? hackin / homebrew community.. again gamers don care if they can sign windows media player on their ps3..
bet nothin of any significance is gonna come out on homebrew..maybe few..in the long run not worth the effort..hackers and hardcore programmers will move on to other stuff..
4) geohot stood on the shoulder of giants fail0verflow and continued their work..posted keys..asks for job (who would ever giv himm a job if they know he would expose company secrets if they don give him a hike)..arrogant.immature...fail0verflow didn release the keys showin some responsibility..
personally fail0verflow could have approached sony , exposing the flaw..assisted in patchin it without public disclosure of methods.. made few bucks in the process.. instead messy legal battle..
do these guys really care about security ? would they have posted such flaws of lets say online bankin systems wher they have their own money or gone directly to IT guys.. wit great power comes greater responsibility and maturity on the way these need to be handled..
many countries have gun control for the same reason..creates more risk than actual safety..greater good..
who loses in the long run??
majority of ps3 users probably gamers or those who use it like a media centre like me with more firmware updates / stupid but effective security measures aka steam / more online verification crap, costlier / lesser games ,piracy , psn becomes a charged service..etc etc..
who majorly gains and are jerkin off now...99% pirates, 1% homebrewers..
wat can sony do? act of good will for its majority users..
1)enable other os
2)enable PS2 support.. this is personal..missed out on the entire ps2 game scene
3)officially support homebrew
4)make a better browser ... for gods sake..
being a ps3 user,i for the first time felt dissapointed with these events...

BEFORE YOU IDIOTS SAY IT HASN'T, IT'S NOT THE HACK DIRECTLY BUT WHAT THE HACK NOW ENABLES, IT NOW ENABLES OTHER PACKAGES TO BE RUN THAT LET CHEATING IN GAME OCCUR
SO STFU BEFORE YOU SAY THE HACK HASN'T DONE THIS, IT HAS and what is more there is proof.
MW2 shows you your "killers" screen for when they killed you, it's FULL of "god mode" words across the screen and the name of the tool they've used.

But now it's too late, pay for your sins you greedy stupid fat evil corporation m0therfukrs.

They should just STFU and F*&K Off!!!
I think the time and money that they'll spend in a frivilous lawsuit would be much better spent making a better system and games!!!! So once again they should just STFU and F*&K Off and leave everyone alone to do what they like with the overpriced products they bought from them!!!

It is the same reason why they removed the "Backwords Compatablity." The Playstation (R) 2 games were outselling Playstation (R) 3 games and to boost sales, they broke (one) of their promises and took out backwards compatibility. Sure the unit itself with B.C. costs more, but they were hoping for a huge net gain on the games which they never saw.
Now everyone here, this is for Computer Science and should be treated as such. George Hotz is not only helping the hacking community, but any organization that wants to bring forth the potential of the Playstaition (3) to solve real life problems.
