PSFreedom – Hack your PS3 using a Nokia N900!

Submitted by greg; September 03, 2010

Ok, I'm not 100% sure on this because I don't have, nor do I know anyone who has a Nokia N900. This apparently isn't a direct port of PSGroove either; it's KaKaRoTo's own implementation of the same USB Hub-emulating exploit. Does it work? I'm hoping someone reading this has a N900 and can confirm. If that's you, try this:
  1. Download psfreedom.tar.gz, extract it, and copy the files to your N900 into /root.
  2. To enable, type: ./psfreedom-enable.sh
  3. Unplug or switch off your PS3 completely killing the power.
  4. Connect your N900 to your PS3 via USB.
  5. Boot your PS3 using the power button quickly followed by pressing the eject button.
  6. Now you should see Package Manager in the XMB allowing you to install and run unsigned code.
  7. To disable and return your N900 to normal, type: ./psfreedom-disable.sh
Some video to back it up:
KaKaRoTo, props. Nice work. Update: A few peeps via the comments have confirmed that PSFreedom is indeed working. Update: KaKaRoTo has released the PSFreedom source code. Update: Apparently it works on a Nokia N800 and N810 using this method. Try it out, let us know. Download: PSFreedom for N900 - source: kakaroto

this is great news! but does someone know if this will work on the nokia 5800 that also is running on a symbian software s60V5?
and does this mean that every time you want to play installed games you need to have your phone in?

This might sound like a silly question, but is it possible to emulate the jailbreak chipset in JS? If it can be done, then there's no reason why this wont work on virtually any modern cell phone.

Is this backup manager working like:
1)insert a ps3 game disc into the ps3 and create "backup"

2) download .iso from the internet, extract it to the external hdd and play?

Thanks guys!

^^ Awesome speed and programming skills ^^ but not too many people have that Phone =/ so it's not really that OPEN or even cheaper than the PSJB ... like someone said on an earlier comment it's more probable that a ps3 owner have a psp than an N900. Hope someone really port it to that one =)

Works great - I have a Nokia N900 and I can confirm it works. Really easy to do if you have a bit of a background knowledge of Linux. Tad harder if you don't but still achievable.

PSP and iPhone users - I think it all depends on what chipset your phone uses. However I maybe wrong...

Yup, I have an N900 and I can confirm it working as well.

I was able to (with a good bit of research, since I have very little knowledge of how my phone actually works) managed to get it working.

I have installed both the regular backup manager and the stealth version.

Currently I'm copying a game (Dynasty Warriors Gundam 2) onto a portable HDD. It's taking a while, so I will update you when it's done. btw, this is using the stealth backup manager, I have not tried the regular yet.

Next on my list is to see if the backup actually works, and to backup a game to my PS3's HDD (a 500 gig thanks to a nice upgrade a while back)

I actually wanted to do it onto my PS3's HDD, but it automatically started copying into my external drive that I left plugged in to install the backup managers

Updates as they happen? I'm glad this works, and I find it ironic as I was one of the suckers who pre-ordered PSJailbreak. I will not cancel my order, cause it makes it so I don't have to go through all this trouble with my phone again.

@Sebi - This won't run if you are using the power kernel in the N900. It has to be the standard one.

John,

Have you already tried the backuped game? does it start?

I was also able to backup some games. But they won't start. If i press the 'X' button to start the game the XMB of the ps3 apears. But I still see the original game (the one on the blue-ray disc). I don't see the backup game i just selected in the backup manager.

After spending a couple hours backing up to an external HDD, and realizing it didn't have enough room, I had to restart the backup to my PS3's HDD.

It was MUCH faster, and yes, I was able to play my backup after. I even tried hotswapping games and it worked fine.

I only tested the one game so far, but it seems to work fine.

BTW, I have the regular kernel on my n900 and 3.41 on my PS3, I did have to use the patched PSfreedom that works with backup manager. It also works with the stealth version

We did the jailbreak at work using a Nokia N900. It was straightforward to do, and was funny seeing my mate faffing around with OpenSSH and stuff!

On my advice, we tried SF4 (figured it'd be the quickest to install. Bad idea - boringly long install followed by game not accepting any control. Confirmed not working on some compatibility list).

Probably not going to bother with the jailbreak myself just yet until I know what I'm getting myself into. Oh, and until they port something groovy like VLC or an emulator over :)

difference between v2 and v3?
I have now v3 in Nokia N900 but I can not find a difference.
update from a game via PS3 is not possible, PSNDM ok.
but ever I have an error after update a game, 80028F14, I change after update the new Eboot with the old from Game.

I have tested it with iPhone 2G and the best is v2 for iPhone.
