PS3 3.55 Jailbreak Released

Put your hands together ... geohot has released a modified PUP that jailbreak's 3.55 for your homebrew'ing enjoyment; it's a real small PUP too. And to respect geohot's wishes we won't be hosting/mirroring that here -- if you click here you'll find everything you need. Well, not everything -- pkg tools will follow. Available however is geohot's homebrew pkg from this video. So again, click here to download the custom PUP and demo pkg. Note: Current pkgs (homebrew) will not install/run. Please, be patient. We'll keep you posted when those pkg tools are available. Extract and copy the update file -- PS3UPDAT.PUP -- to /PS3/UPDATE on a USB mass storage device. Connect that device to your PS3 and flash it through Settings -> System Update. Update: The test.pkg does not install on KaKaRoTo-created PUPs. Update: I recommend, if you've flashed a KaKaRoTo-created CFW, that you restore OFW 3.55 before flashing geohot's custom PUP. Otherwise the test.pkg won't work. Update: Confirmed working: geohot's 3.55-jb. Be sure to read the user agreement. That'll answer all your questions. Kudos, geohot! Nice work. Update: geohot's pkg tools are available right here. 'Jailbreak'...another buzzword to get us excited, when in fact this is the exact same as Kakaroto's CFW as far user usability goes.

People who don't understand how things work are asking for a bit much though, everything is taken in steps. People are screaming for backup loaders, but it simply doesn't work like that.
You don't just go from private key to running backups.
Nor does CFW always mean backup loader.

For one the other one that was released didnt run homebrew that wasnt signed if im no mistaken this bypasses the signed homebrew. So therfore his is kinda useless and this gets us further... All he did was add install pkgs which is still like doing it on the ps3.. Just with a Menu. Useless this aint useless. GEHOT UR A BEAST keep up the good work.

Wow I flashed it, and had 3.55 (I do have an old phat ps3) and it loads and everything... but the game menu is blank, no disk, no save, nothing... Screw sony they lied to me when they sold me a $4000 52" tv last year saying it would be 3d compatible after a firmware update. Even customer sales confirmed this so did the sony store. They lied and after they dilivered my tv I knew this because it was only 50hertz. Then they refused to take it back or do anything about it. Then they screwed me over again by removing the other os. Then they release 3d with no 3d anaglyph support so screwed us all again. then they release remote play for viao only pc's. Argggg So I hope backups become possible so I can modify them to work with remote play to my psp. because Sony screwed us with that also. I am also hoping that custom firmware brings anaglyph support to 3d games so atleast most people can enjoy that way at least. Sony screw you after all your lies you get what you deserve. :O)

Ok, from what I've gathered here, Geohot's version is not a CFW, it is a perma-jailbreak (the custom PUP just adds the jailbreak folder permanently), and skips signature checking on the pkgs. Where as Kakarotok's version is a full size PUP, which only adds the jailbreak folder for installing pkg files.

Am I correct so far?

Also, after reading more comments, I've gathered that you must be on 3.55 OFW before installing this, meaning you MUST update your current firmware, 3.15, 3.41 etc, or get off Kakarotok's version before installing.

I have installed this perfectly, the beeping is OKAY just turn the PS3 back on and its done. As for those still without a clue...
1. You cannot use homebrew as of right now.
2. Geohot says "new signing tools comming soon", this was a typo. He meant new packaging tools comming soon.

This includes all emulators, backup managers etc.

Yes it is only about 5mb, it isn't a full size PUP, as it only modifys what you currently have. Try downloading the file over, and make sure your on 3.55 OFW before installing Geohots jb. If is still don't work, you can try installing from the recovery menu. Google if you dont know how to get to that. GL!

IM ON A MAC. I HAVE FORMATTED 2 PENDRIVES TO FAT 32. I ADDED THE FOLDERS PS3 AND INSIDE THAT FOLDER ONE CALLED UPDATE WHICH CONTAINS THE PS3UPDAT.PUP

I think one of the worst things about these new upgrades, is the lack of explanation and the how to properly do this. Everybody is either so excited or just want to bitch about piracy while they are still using these updates.
Ok, so let me see if I have this right.

First I must have the SONYS official upgrade to do this. Which means, any update prior to 3.55 must be updated first. So our beloved 3.41 must go bye, bye.

Second, we take our USB DRIVE and create a folder PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP. OK, at this point I am a little confused, I see 4 different files, geohot_1st.self, Lv2diag.self, PS3UPDAT.PUP, test.pkg. Which is the correct file, and what am I to do with the other files.

Ok, so if I am at 3.55 now, I would assume that my Jailbreak Dongle is useless, since I cannot Jailbreak a unit at 3.55. Right. So if that is correct, how do I load the PKG file, since the only way to even use the pkg loader is having the unit jailbreaked?

From what I have read, after this upgrade is properly done, I will no longer be able to backup any games onto the ps3, No matter if it is with the original disc or thru the FTP manager. But I assume that, for example Multimans file manager will still work with any games that are currently loaded? Just won't be able to backup anything until Multiman updates there program.

Am I close, please someone refine this to help me and anyone else wondering what the correct procedure is and what problems we may face.

okay just just installed the .pup that was linked on the page. it was only about 5mb when extracted. I put it in the ps3/update folder on my usb and the pkg file on not in a folder. i put it into my 120gb slim and installed in seconds. the screen went black then my ps3 beeped about five times, then shut off. i had to push the power button to turn back on bc my controller de-synched. as expected my ps3 was running fine... i signed in to psn and then was able to install the pkg. this is so effing amazing! thank you geohot and all the amazing people working on this stuff! now the ps3 will truly be able to do everything

1. If you upgrade you RISK getting your ps3 banned. There is always a risk and if you have to ask, you shouldn't be doing it to begin with.

2. This runs homebrew that is signed.. Which means geohot isn't the cause of current homebrew not working, it just means he's not being a pirate enabler. If you want to play pirate games, don't look to geohot to provide you with the means.

3. You have to update to 3.55 because this is FOR 3.55. If you want to stay at 3.41, then stay there; We don't care.

4. All of the current homebrew just needs to be encoded into the correct install package and signed properly, this is all. When a tool is released to do this, everything we have now will be repackaged and signed like it should be, then will run on 3.55.

Note: This is not a CFW.. It's small because it's a script that changes a bit of data to turn off some checks the ps3 uses. It's possible to change some other data to allow the ps3 to be further jailbroke, but geohot doesn't want that. We hack enough to get homebrew and that is all.

Yet more good news. Although running unsigned code is probably slightly less elegant than adding some sort of signing mechanism to sign any package before installing it. I suspect there are piracy fears about this but it is going to happen (and who knows may even be less detectable.....)

I did say this was great news folks I'm just pointing out that there's a further direction for this to be taken and a potential pitfall in its use. I'm delighted to see this being done although would be interested in the opinions of any other members regarding whether it might be more advantageous at this stage to simply sign the apps just incase or whether it genuinely won't matter. I suspect the answer will be no1 knows yet but Ive learned to respect the knowedge and opinions of others. Something many posters here seem to lack.

Having just checked the downloads page, Open Manager has been grabbed 100,000 times. I think that there's enough evidence to prove the existence of a community looking for backup managers to be added into the CFW/MFW equation.

I may sound hypocritical, but if a CFW with syscalls was release I'm sure the download numbers would be well over 100,000.

We're still at the mercy at the devs, and I do appreciate all the work they are doing. Many people will still use their homebrew tools, and backup managers would be impossible without the progress they have made.

For all you optimists, over at ps3news they translated the words of a Spanish dev who release the beta of his CFW, which is currently exactly like KaKaRoTos and geohots, but he mentions that he has access to the kernel and is planning to release a backup manager with the next version of his CFW. PS3-hacks might want to post that article over here.

PS3 slim. I was running KaKaRoTo's mod pup so I installed OFW then I flashed the 3.55JB. everything works fine. Only one thing I no longer have PS1 support. Can anyone confirm that this gets rid of backwards compatibility?

I think comercial rules stinks a lot. A cannot put all musics in one Guitar hero in a easy way, because you must buy the previous blu-ray version (sometimes cannot find in the market, especially in my country), take a code and enter to download the musics but you already have. One time you uses the code, cannot be used again. Confusion and burocracy. Sooner or later BlkCatz will provide one link with all DLC with quick install. most of you should bother reading all the comments before posting questions/makeing assumptions...

1) You HAVE to install this over OFW, istalling it over kakaroto's wont work. You can overwrite OFW 3.55 with this if your already on that. if you on kakarotos just reinstall the original before you use this.

2) This CFW DISABLES signature checks. You dont have to sign anything, you just have to repackage them with his tool he will release soon. So what you will do when he releases it its use his unpacking tool then just repack it with the PACKING tool he's releasing so its in the right format to install on his firmware

3) The file included in this is just a symbol but its proof that he found the right way to package files and have them run. Put it on the root of the USB and Just wait for the tools to be released\. From there it'll be simple (thats an assumption on my part).

Scratch that. If you run the test package be sure to press x instead of going to the XMB and selecting quit. thats what gets rid of ps1 support that is until a restart. The same bug exists if you install test.pkg and then install KaKa's pup. I guess its now back to OFW so I can run Geohot's JB

dude...games USED to be $20USD back in the 1995, when PS first came out. the reason why the price is increasing is because Devs in Gaming company are getting better.

Back in the old days, we had no update, no patches, and you're lucky if it the game actually HAD any replay values.

If you were to compare the games from 1995 to now, we're getting off lucky. heck, if you were to pop in an old game like Rival School or Super Street Fighter or Resident Evil, you'll notice right off the bat the different in graphic, gameplay, and/or longetivy.

then you also have to take in note that we're also using Blu-Ray disc that can hold up to 50gb. that mean more content or graphic or level can be placed into the disc.

so, before you moan about the price, THINK of what including. i'll gladly pay $60 IF the game is worth it, and so far, it is. if you're having issue with the price, then you need to find a stable job or sumding. do newspaper delivery or mow grass...i'm certain you'll get money somehow.

did you put the .pup in the right place on the flash drive? on you flash drive make a folder called "ps3" and in that folder make another folder called "update". and then place the .pup in the "update" folder. so on your flash drive it should be, ps3/update/update.pup. and then update via the settings menu. settings/ system update

i love the original resident evil. classic! and back in 96 i payed $50 for that game. ps2 games are $50. and they are the same....no updates, hardly any replay value, crappy multiplayer, no addons. honestly.... i have a decent job and can afford these $60 games. but i have to agree with john. $60 is rediculous! i honestly think they should be around $30-$40.....not $60!!!!! you buy 5games, thats $300 right there. and then they wanna charge you extra for addons! .99c for a costume pack. or $5 for 1 or 2 extra maps for mulyiplayer. it is pretty crazy these days.

Atleast this does something compared to kakarotto's.

Also geohot promised pkg tools later, so you can make homebrew compatible with this.

Installed this just for fun on my phat ps3. screen went black and my ps3 started beeping like i've never heard before.
After a while and alot of beeping ps3 shut down. I was pretty sure that it was bricked, but suprisingly it worked. Test.pkg ran fine etc.

Probably will blow up if I install official 3.55 again, but who knows.

okay I've read the comments - yes.
But there is one question to me.
I downloaded the jailbreak.zip.
So now, if I connect that device to my PS3 and flash it through Settings -> System Update, I can play games that I downloaded? downloaded a lot on my USB Drive.
So the PSJailbreak is not necessary anymore?

Hey, if you're having trouble installing the official FW from Sony, follow these simple steps:

Have your ps3 on stand-by.
Press the on button, hold it, untill it turns off again.
Now turn it on, you will hear: Beep, beep, beepbeep. (haha)
Follow the steps on the screen, look for the "Update firmware" option (something like that, it's the last option on the list!)
Put your USB in the ps3, press the option. The update should be in USB/PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.pup

Done. After this, install Geo's patch.

To any skeptics, this installed perfectly on 3.55 PS3 FAT 40GB. Believe it or not, my PS3 is still intact after three years. I'll probably revert to OFW 3.55 just like I did with KaKaRoTos MFW, but since geohot has released his signing tools, I suppose I will play around with some homebrew before a real BM-enabled CFW is released.

I don't think anyone is really going to care about the CFW on PS3 until it can play backups.

Homebrew on PS3 is nice, but I don't think people are going to jump on this that quick.

I think people would much rather be able to play free games rather than a PS3 Tetris homebrew Billy whipped up in a week.

Did you re-sign the pkg for the emulator source with geohots tools? You can't just use old homebrew that has already been created out of the hat, it needs to be re-signed using the keys from geohot during the pkg encrypt to be able to run on geohots jailbreak.

For those not knowing what to do with the tools, the ones on the site are source files only. Geohot HAD the other files on his site including the .exe files and everything set to go, but then removed it and only kept the source up. SO, you must know how to use git/github and stuff to set it all up. As for me, I have no idea about git, so I cannot help there, I was luckily one of the few who got the other files before he took them down. =)

As for using them... I am still having no luck, I know how to use them, but when I actually sign the .pkg files, I go to my PS3, and they only install 14%, then give an error. This is consistant with everything I tried, BM (which wouldn't work anyway), emulators, FTP server, etc. All stop at 14%. Giving me corrupt data which I have to delete.

Anyone have some info I can use??? I'd like to get something going here...

but anytime i try and run the exe i get an error saying missing libeay32.dll

i also tried to decrypt a pkg using the decrytper from here and it says it only does retail packages !! which im not to fussed about but using the ps3 signing tools i need to try

any idea how to fix the missing libeay32.dll error and then is it simply a case of dragging a pkg file into the exe and patching them

Thats easy, just google "libeay32.dll", and download it from www.dlldump.com. When you get it extract it or whatever (you might not need to), and put the .dll file into your system32 folder on your PC. ** This IS for windows. =P Thats it, try running again.

Also, Im pretty sure you need another called "zlib1.dll", do the same process if you get another error asking for this one.

snes9x works great on this firmware. easy to install.
copy this http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Q... to root of usb drive and install the pkg
copy roms from http://www.freeroms.com/ to root aswell
street fighter and mario allstars confimed working.
all have text across the screen though.
snes9x is found in unknown folder after install.
run final option usbhdd to find games.

leave the name as ps3updat.pup and create a folder on the root of your USB called "PS3". Then create a folder inside your PS3 folder called "UPDATE". Put the .pup file in there and then do the system update and it should work.

Couldn't be any easier, thanks geohot, i had been holding on on hacking my ps3 but this time im jumping in.

if you google a bit you will find its already possible to run backups on this JB, all you need to do is patch ur backup, already tested and backed up some of me bluerays into the ps3, luckily i had installed a big HDD not long ago =P

This is where it all really starts!
(and also there is no need to boot up the ps3 with any devices attached anymore just boot and play, yay)

Ok so i know this is gonna seem like a dumb comment but im stumped. I have just finished flashing the OFW 3.55 and yet for some reason my system keeps telling me that geohots jailbreak is corrupted data. ive tried installing it both in the system update on the xmb and in recovery mode. when i do it from the xmb it unpacks it and restarts then makes a really weird series of beeps then just restarts like nothing happened? Any thoughts?
BTW sick job on how fast everything is progressing guys. you guys are awesome!

If anyone didn't notice I should mention that KaKaRoTo-created PUP files don't actually do anything. I did some research and the project is a Proof of Concept that shows you can modify the update PUP XML file for the menus and still be installable. The one that geohot released actually has some mods and does work. If you get 80029564 then you should go back to OFW (just install sony's official update PUP) then install geohot's PUP.

yesterday i purchased PS3 version 3.55 and i don't know anything about jail break and these all stuff....and after read your post it seems that you are master in these all things...well i'm software engineer making websites. this is my humble request to you if you will suggest me and explain me how to use jail break and how to install it on my PS3...one more question...from where i can download jailbreak software and after jailbreak Am i able to play pirated games on my PS3 or do i still need to buy original discs of games...please suggest Sir...my mail id is : vickysdhir@yaho o.co.in
