PS3 2.80 Firmware Update Released; Open Remote Play Broken

Submitted by greg; June 24, 2009

Sony! C'mon... For real?! So if you're able to quit and exit out of Fight Night Round 4 for a moment or two, you'll see Sony has released PS3 Firmware Update 2.80. And despite what Mr. Lempel says --
The playback quality of some PLAYSTATION 3 format software has been improved.
Sony has also put a damper on Open Remote Play. Those tricky bastards have seemingly "poisoned" the video stream... If you start the ORP client and establish a Remote Play connection, you'll notice the video quickly becomes garbled nonsense and eventually the client bails. The good news -- you can still make the connection, meaning the authentication hasn't changed any... Open Remote Play Progress...

On a better note, Sony didn't make it update before log in. So no need to update!

Does this affect the PSP in anyway? How can they 'poison' ORP without 'poisoning' the PSP !?!?!?

I'm not risking updating until I know what's going on with the update. Time to take the sucker offline me thinks!!1

Hi, please send a dump of the video stream to the FFmpeg bug tracker, we might be able to find the problem for you.

You just got t be kidding me...

They can't be serious.

The fixed in a fucking minute, but to fix things like crashing internet browser, and include interesting things they either take ages, or simply do nothing.
Wtf sony?

Benjamin,

Thank you very much for the advice! I have uploaded a sample dump of the bad video stream, the log file, and a description in to the directory h264_open_remot e_play_crash and created a new issue: #1225

Any insight would be much appreciated, thanks again!

Yup. Old PSP firmware works too. Which means they don't require up-to-date PSP firmware for Remote Play. This is great news, it shouldn't be very long before I have a fix for ORP.

I incorrectly assumed that they would have to update the PSP and PS3 firmware together, at the same time, and disable Remote Play for older PSP firmware versions. It turns out they've found a way to disable ORP, but still allow old PSP firmware to use Remote Play. I'm knee deep in this now, and I'm feeling confident I'll have a fix soon.

great work on ORP dash hacker-- i would have commented sooner but all i have is my ps3 for internet usually.

greg: when i go on this website on my ps3 and try to post a comment it says "sorry, no posts matched your criteria" i was wondering if u r able to fix tht so ps3 users can post comments. idk if its the java script or wat.. but im sure u can fix tht if u have time and if u want..idk

dash-hacker: bro this is a great concept and im so glad u made it. it really comes in handy for me and plenty of other ppl too."(but u dnt need me to tell u tht u already kno :) )
i no tht u put A LOT of time and effort into this in making it run juuussst right and it really pisses me off how sony has a problem with it. and to the ppl tht say tht theres no point in this, in my opinion i think ur wrong.

greg, feel free to delete this if u want lol
and to ppl tht reply to this negatively: if u dnt have somthing nice to say then dnt say it couse tht proves u dnt have a life but to sit there and insult ppl u dnt even no
GREAT WORK DASH HACKER!

FUK U SONY

Ah! I've never tried leaving a comment from the PS3's web browser. It must be a JavaScript problem, yes. I'll look into that more later.

Do you still think you can fix it? If sony has a means to detect open remote play what can you do? Appart from spoofing the mac address of the psp. Is that a posibility?
Is that how they detect none psp devices because the mac address dose not match Orp.
I think open remote play is probably the best function of any homebrew so far. So I do hope a fix is on its way.
Good luck Dash! I hope you can figure it out.

Yup, you're exactly right. With FW 2.80, the PS3 will "poison" the video stream with random invalid bytes if the connection did not come from a registered PSP's MAC address.

If you spoof your MAC to that of your registered PSP, it works!

Now, I'm trying to find an appropriate solution, something involving creating a software virtual interface under Linux/Window/OSX set with the correct MAC address.

Also, I need to figure out how to fix remote connections, as the MAC address will obviously be that of your home gateway/router no matter what. Reverse engineering Sony's DNAS authentication stuff is not in the cards, too much work.

wtf!?!?!?!?!?

c´mon sony. where where your psp without dark alex and aaaaall those brilliant homebrew developers?!?!?!

it would be DEAD!!! the software makes the hardware!!! no games, no one buys psp...

same with ps3!!!
don´t you limited-minded sony engeneers not take even more advantage over the 360???
this open remote play was just the first step for the REAL COOL ps3 apps. and you banned it?!?!?!?!

tstststs, SHAME ON YOU!!!

The PSP would sell much better and much more developers would bring games for the PlayStation Portable, wouldn't morons like DarkAlex have hacked the firmware and gave you the possibility to play illegal games.

The homebrew that exist for PSP might been great but what killed the PSP are those fucking hackers who don't think about paying for games.

It just like what happened to the PSX back in the days...

...sure...

1. in my oppinion ps1 would not have won the console wars so clear against the other brands if copying games didn´t make it THAT popular.

2. and the brand new psp-go feature is also pretty lame:
woooow, i can download not only games from the playstation store (which is cool), i can also donwnload applications and pay too much money for them. and i bet 90% are the same applications we all use since years thanks to homebrew...

...but anyway...
open remote works again and that´s the main thing!!!

Yup, a little. Since I've spent the last two days crawling through PSP assembly code, that's two days lost toward finally completing the audio/video synch/buffering code.

When I have a fix for FW 2.80, what I'll probably do is incorporate that in to v1.2, back-port some of the new v1.3 changes, and release v1.2a for OSX/Windows.

That way I can get some of the new stuff out that people are asking for like disabling UDP search, Wake-On-LAN (remote start), custom keyboard bindings (especially important for Macbook owners), and several significant stability fixes (crashes under Windows, and occasional video corruption under OSX/Linux).

there has to be an exploit for ps3..there has to b....nuthing is perfect. and if anyone (or me) ever finds it dont report it until there is a cfw available so tht sony doesnt take advantage of there power and make us have to log in and updaTe

i payed US $460 for a used ps3 at a gamestop i think i should be allowed to do as i please with it as long as i dont infringe on legal stuff like pirated games. But running programs and homebrew made by individual coders who want to get the most for their money out of the system be it which ever one should be allowed sony only wants not only to control what you buy but how the fuck you use it, i realy like sony products but this shit is really pissing me off.
I buy the games US $40 for used or $60 for brand new and controllers Sony bluetooth controller $50-60 bucks give me a fucking break SONY!!!!!.

Yes, same problem. I have a 60 GB original PS3. Just turn on your system while holding the on button until you hear a beep. This re-sets the system.

Now my BD playback is fine. Let me know if you get the same results

I'm going to report this to Sony today.

Ok how about you give me the programs or sorce code you all used in the begining and maybe i can do something with this, because as i requested about 10-15 post prior to this one the big boys of the hack sceen cant seem to work together their to busy adjusting their tampons to sheir their findings to realy get this thing going.
Once again Im very disapointed.

I don't mean orp even though that is awsome I mean slot of the hacks in general it's sad when you read "well I found it first and this other guy took it and made it better and didn't give me credit" type of thing shame on both of them the original for being such a whiner and the new guy for not giving credit where credit is due.
That's just my perspective.
